  15. erin choi at hopeless is always good for variant numbers. i usually email her, i can do so if soupy doesn't answer the tweet. like cwhit said, i like it. i actually really, really like it. unlike TSSF, this band actually shows progression and it's fucking great. if i was still stupid and 16 i would be upset. but i love the melody and 3/4 time signature, the latter of which i think is sometimes pretty hard to pull off in pop punk. (although, also as cwhit said, this isn't really "pop punk.")

  16. HEY FOLKS! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE KIND WORDS! So, thanks to you trusty VCers I hadn't otherwise realised our websites currency converter had stopped working. It's fixed now, and through some proxy site testing mimicking a US and then Germany connection, it seems to be working again. Currencies should be local, but final checkout will remain in $AUD. Which for a lot of you, means big currency savings. For me, it means pressing records is even more expensive. Swings and roundabouts. Here's the mockup of our half & half variant, as noted limited to /300. PRE-ORDER: http://hobbledehoyrecords.com/store/brand/caspian/ Thanks for your ongoing support and suggestions!

  22. clear vinyl here (/500): http://store.greennoiserecords.com/collections/dirtnap-records-releases/products/radioactivity-silent-kill-clear-vinyl-lp black vinyl here: http://store.greennoiserecords.com/collections/dirtnap-records-releases/products/radioactivity-silent-kill-black-vinyl-lp Seems pretty safe to assume that almost no one doubted Radioactivity's ability to follow up their 2013 Dirtnap debut with something equally stunning. Frontman and chief songwriter Jeff Burke (The Marked Men, The Reds, The Potential Johns) has certainly done more than enough to earn that kind of expectation and pressure. But Silent Kill, which finds Burke backed by Marked Men compatriot Mark Ryan and two-thirds of Bad Sports (Daniel Fried and Gregory Rutherford), does more than merely match the virtues of its self-titled predecessor. Radioactivity's first LP was rightly hailed as a sort of sequel to The Marked Men's remarkable run through the first decade of the millennium, and while Silent Kill bears the unmistakable hallmarks of that band's tightly wound "Denton sound," Radioactivity can now lay claim to a sonic territory of their very own. Burke's distinctive hooks dig as deep as ever, but the scope of his vision has expanded, and now that the Burke/Ryan/Fried/Rutherford all-star team has had some time to cohere, Radioactivity can do all sorts of damage in less than thirty minutes. Although the twelve songs on Silent Kill abide one strict rule--providing garage punk pleasure at all costs--Radioactivity bend that mandate in myriad ways. Breathless ragers like "Battered" and "No Alarm" are as fleet and raw as anything in the combined canon of Radioactivity's members, while mid-tempo heartbreakers "Way Out," "Connection" and "Where I Come From" find Burke and company opening up their sound to let in a little tenderness. And then there are songs like "Not Here" or "With You," which enact perfect unions of melody and kinetic energy. Admirers of Burke's legacy will be not only satisfied, but pleasantly surprised.

  27. After spending a little bit of time with the record and avoiding knee-jerk reactions, I've got to say that it's an extremely goofy release. I went into it expecting nothing of SOPTC-caliber, but even then I wasn't really prepared. I feel like the album tries a little too hard to be too many things at once. SOPTC was innovative at its time, sure, and I have no doubt that the bits of hardcore, techno, jazz, and everything else probably raised a few brows in 1998. But my brows are raised for entirely different reasons, this time around. There are maybe 2-3 moments on the entire album that resemble "classic" Refused - at least to my ears - and way too much funk and "stadium rock" production. It's basically an abrasive pop record. The hooks are catchy enough that they'll win over a large audience, which is perfect for the oversized stadiums where these songs were (almost) obviously meant to be played. I won't be paying $80 to watch Refused play singles from this album through a pair of binoculars, but to each his own. I don't absolutely hate the record, but there are still too many songs that are too forgettable to me. At least for the time being. Elektra is a pretty solid jam, and there are a few parts of other tracks that caught my attention – though, evidently, not enough to exclaim holy shit! while eagerly checking the titles to make a note of them. Regrettably, the songs that do stand out happen to do so for all the wrong reasons. The fucking awful, brass, swingy chorus of War on the Palaces is bad. Really bad. I looked in disgust and disappointment at my car's stereo deck when I first heard it. Which reminds me; I've tried this album out in a few different settings. Focused, with headphones. Blared loudly while driving fast. Over quality speakers, in the background. None of it really allows the album to shine. The parts of the record that are horrendous - like that goddamn wonky bass line in Françafrique (ft. Flea) - are so obnoxiously cheesy that it either kills the mood or distracts me. I can't say I'm absolutely disappointed with the record, because I didn't really go into it with high expectations. I ordered a clear copy from Bull Moose and that gold-swirl from overseas. Will probably end up selling one of them at cost, immediately, if anyone's interested. Will hold onto the other because I'm not opposed to seeing if it'll grow on me. At this point, I have my doubts - due largely to Shellback's corny hooks and questionable funk output from the band - but alas. Stranger things have happened.
