  1. I'm sorry, that is completely fucking absurd. Maybe it's nearly impossible to you to listen to art created by dicks and enjoy it, but you're in the minority. I listen to plenty of Jazz musicians who were unfaithful and abusive to their wives. Hip-hop created by violent thugs. Classical composed by upper class drama queens of questionable morale character. experimental rock created by pompous, pretentious pricks. It does not affect my enjoyment of the art whatsoever. It is simply laughable to say their art directly comes from their hatred of transgendered people - as if there is nothing else to them besides what you don't like. Like I said, I think Whirr sucks, but if you can't appreciate art created by morally questionable people, you might be looking for a buddy, not an artist. to me, artists have no obligation to be nice folks who I'd like to get beers with. That's not what I look for in an artist - I look for good music that makes me feel something. Is sonic youth artistically discredited because Moore was cheating on Gordon? Is "American Pie" a shit song because Don McLean is a notorious asshole? More importantly, who the fuck cares what artists do in their personal lives? Are we not above tabloid-style gossip and witch hunts? Priorities, guys. Jesus.

  4. I haven't read every post in this thread yet but wanted to make a few things clear. - When I defended the band on Tumblr, I was referring to their shit talking of Pitchfork. Should I have been defending them at all? Definitely not. I had never (and still have never) seen the band say the word "faggot" or post anything transphobic until last night. That doesn't excuse the other stupid and offensive things they have said, but at one point in my life I felt that we had so many bands, and worked with so many individual people, that it was fundamentally impossible for everyone to have opinions in line with my own. This was a very naive and even harmful outlook to have. I realized that is not the way to approach these sort of situations and that as soon as anyone feels unsafe, marginalized, disrespected, threatened, or unaccepted, that whatever is happening is not ok. - All Whirr and Camera Shy merchandise will be removed from our store, we're working on it. - This is not a PR stunt. We are not dropping them to save face. We are not ceasing to work with them because of the hate we got on twitter, we simply hadn't seen the bands tweets yet until we were notified by the general public. We would have made this exact decision on our own, although the thousands of people tweeting at us definitely made it happen faster. If you have any questions, comments, or simply want to talk about this with me, please feel free to email me. [email protected]. I will respond to everyone so don't feel that your time may be wasted. Thank you. -jeff

  5. Can't believe there are people who aren't digging this. They took everything that was great about the EPs and amplified it. It's exactly what I was hoping for. In a world where people lose their shit over movie OSTs, hot topic splatter represses, and whatever the hell twiabp is doing it's refreshing to have a loud/raw album hit VC this hard. Reminds of the good ol' days.

  6. Everyone that hates Whirr now should check out Night School. They're like the inverse of Whirr with only the old singer and a new band. Also an LP about to drop. https://graveface.bandcamp.com/album/night-school-heart-beat

  17. I've never heard even a second of a Whirr song. Just want to say that when it comes to artists being shitty, it's one thing to enjoy a Beatles song despite their history of domestic abuse. It's another thing to directly financially support an artist in 2015 saying shitty things. Whether or not you listen to the Beatles does not affect the members at all. Whether or not you give money to an independent artist actually has an effect. I'm not saying do or don't, just that it's a case where speaking your opinion with your wallet is possible. There's also a huge difference between enjoying art and supporting it. If you like the tunes, listen. Just think about where your money is going if you decided to pay for something. I understand why RFC didn't do this, but I would have been fine with it of their decision had been to sell off the remaining stock of Whirr shit at some kind of discount, with some of the money going to charity. I feel for a small label having to eat that kind of investment. Like Broken World had to do with that David Belli split because the other artist turned out to be a sexual predator.

  18. I understand how free speech works, guys... The question I'm posing is: Isn't it equally (if not more) hateful to wish death on someone than to make fun of them for their gender orientation? As a society are we really going down this road where it's less acceptable to be politically incorrect than it is to wish harm on another human being, even if they are shitty people? Again, I don't agree with what Whirr said, but aren't these people equally guilty of hate?

  23. It just so happens that my euro 180g pink copy arrived today as well, so I compared it to the pale violet deluxe I picked up at the show. All around, I'd say that the violet press is the overall winner. The pink is pretty washed out and plain looking, as everyone else has stated. It arrived in fairly good shape for a record shipped from Europe to Vancouver, no bends or creases though there is a bit of a seam split on the gatefold and the inner sleeves, and the cardstock is pretty flimsy, the edges have a couple small dents. The records themselves are fine. It's nice that it came in a resealable poly sleeve, though lighter than I usually use, and the inner sleeves have an antistatic lining, which the deluxe didn't. I did get the poster with the pink, didn't get one with the deluxe. The cover is just so flat and plain side by side with the deluxe, the heavy gatefold, the embossing and reflective ink just makes it pop in comparison. Aesthetically, everything about the deluxe violet, the artwork, the materials, the vinyl colour way, is superior. I spun Gifts for the Earth from both, and while there wasn't a huge difference, the violet copy wins again. I don't have the best system (U-Turn Orbit Plus > Radial J33 Turntable preamp/DI > Apogee Duet2 > M-Audio BX5a monitors & KRK 10s sub), but the pink seems to have a bit of harshness and sibilance that wasn't on the violet, and there was definitely surface noise and a persistent tick in the outro that I couldn't see a cause for. I'll have to give both copies a proper wash later, but none of that was present on the deluxe copy. In loud sections both copies sounded very good, but the violet was better.

    What's your latest purchase?

My Grado Green, protractor and zerodust all showed up today. Can't wait to get off work and attempt to align it, or just give up before I try and take it to the shop on Saturday and have them do it.

  38. That apology is the worst. Laughably bad. To the question about separating art from the artist: it's nearly impossible to know that a shitty person created a form of expression and enjoy it. That music is a direct expression of their very being hatred and all. I gave up on them a long time ago and feel right in having done so - music is human expression and we know what these assholes are expressing there is no between-the-lines. I finally am divesting of Kozelek related shit myself for this very reason. Keep listening if you want but don't decieve yourself into thinking there is separation. This is their art. They created it. They own it. There are awful people involved.
