  1. I've been listening to a lot of Whirr lately, and I've got a few thoughts.

    1. I miss the good old days

    2. In hindsight, they are the reason all of indie music shifted towards shoegaze. Ride and Slowdive reunion albums and countless new bands would not have happened without Whirr making shoegaze the indie zeitgeist of the last decade.

    3. They will never get credit for point 2 because they are 'Canceled'

    4. Despite point 3 they sold out of everything they have released post G.L.O.S.S.GATE, and they have ~850,000 monthly listeners on spotify.

    5. Point 4 should logically make no sense because of Point 3, but it kind of just makes me depressed as hell because it's proof that this band got railroaded by their labels and the music media over some straight up nonsense that got turned into a sociopolitical warzone and they were the only casualty. I hope they get the money and recognition they deserve at some point. Despite there being hundreds of new shoegaze bands, I never hear Whirr named as an influence but the sonic influence is in everything.

Also, I wanted to rank the albums/EPs and see what everyone thinks

    1.Pipe Dreams

    2. Distressor

    3.Feels like you

    4.Nothing Split

    5. Around

    6. Sway

I find it curiously funny that when the whole WHIRR “cancellation” happened, G.L.O.S.S. were riding high for a hot minute and then almost overnight just faded to be never heard from again. And yet, WHIRR didn’t really get cancelled as they still played shows, albeit very few, and put out new stuff, and from the looks of things, are still popular.

Weird how that all played out.

Future music listening generations will have no context for this kind of stuff, which is something I find super interesting. Most of us grew up with certain bands/genres and we followed what we liked intensely and kids now have access to all that music without the context of how it was received/ reacted to in real time.

tbf Eli's take in the article re: Whirr is anything but tame (that they sound like the sum of their influences and nothing more, no staying power)

I didn't read ot yet, I clicked on it and recognized the name and made an assumption and that sounds about right. They are really only concerned with 'Canceled' bands because it gives them a platform to be on this this weird moral high ground about music and liking bands.

I read this piece...although it's hella long...that addresses in part on why WHIRR are still popular and whatnot even when they were "cancelled" back when. It has some interesting points, but as I said...it's long.

The person who wrote that does the indiecast podcast which is a group of 20 year olds who think  they know about indie/ emo music, but when they talk about bands it sounds like the most tame takes coming through a Gen Z filter. It's very unfortunate that that's the next generation of music fans/ criticism in a nutshell.

  5. I sold almost half my collection amd have not bought a new record in a long time. I think the only record I purchased this  last year was the Repress of Slip by Quicksand and I probably only listened to it once. Everything is overpriced and almost everything that was hard to find 10 or so years ago has been repressed at this point and that kind of takes some of the fun out of it. I think most new vinyl buyers have ruined the Golden age of the 'Revival' and after all the delays for new releases post covid I completely stopped pre ordering new releases (Which coincided with me becoming a parent) so my interest in new bands has dropped almost completely. The absolute worst has been how Discogs pricing has just become the norm. It is almost impossible to find a good deal anywhere because everyone record store just prices based off Discogs.

  6. The time has come to try to unload my entire collection, I've been selling on here for a few years and am an experienced seller and I would love to get these awesome records to some people who will love and appreciate them! Everything is VG+ and well cared for. I will give you a better price for the more you buy! $5 shipping on all orders, US only.

  7. I pre-ordered issue #6 exactly a year ago from Midtown Comics and I never received an update and just canceled my order not to long ago. It's crazy how poorly these have been handled and every comic book shop I've gone to can't seem to get one

hey guys, someone here recommended an album some time back and i can't recall what it was.  The album was all very pink, and it had a female in the band.  Not slowcrush...  and songs on the shorter side of things if i recall.  The album is not their most recent IIRC.......  Blush something maybe?

    i thought i bookmarked it but i can't find it :(

  10. I worked at a record store 2013-2016, it's my understanding from the policy of the store I worked at, if the record was defective in any way the store would refund you, and the store would contact the distributor for a replacement, the record label sells stock to distributors and record shops buy from distributors, there is no interaction between a record shop and a record label, so the label has no responsibility to replace defective records. It's the responsibility of the place you bought it from.  FYI for anyone who doesn't understand how things work behind the scenes

I mean...to turn it around on you, if you dislike his posts so much why comment on them? Why can you do it but he can't?

Obviously meatrocket is going to do whatever he wants as he has since he joined, but his low-effort posts sometimes get annoying to some people. Even the r/vinylreleases sub doesn't allow people to just post a copy/paste from facebook with no links to a PO, it's lazy not to post it if there are links available and if someone is starting low-effort threads they should be called out on it.

Also, if you're driving your car and surfing the damn internet, not only reading but copying and pasting and making threads...wow. Guy needs to get his shit straight.

Best part is, this thread had actually gotten back on track again.

Because I dont harass the same user constantly? I've been on the boards for quite a few years now and I've noticed a steady decline in users and activity here and I'm pretty sure its the trolls and gatekeepers that keep people away. I'm just advocating for less of that attitude so more people feel accepted here.

  12. 3 hours ago, MachoHommeRandallSauvage said:

The real takeaway from this, folks. Please don't use your phone while driving.

Also a great illustration of why I personally dislike meatrocket's posts. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he is this board's equivalent of a "First comment!" post on youtube/whatever social media you're on.

Additionally, this board is a fucking cesspool for about the last year or more. I don't blame the mods necessarily because I know they do their best for the most part, but there need to be more than 2 fucking mods for the 30000+ registered users on this forum.

If you dislike a post why bother commenting an asshole remarks on it? It makes my eyes roll out of my head every time I have to read a snarky Derek comment on here as much as a spam bot post makes his eyes roll and makes him be an asshole troll, so why can he do that but nobody else?

  13. Personally I have no problem with low effort spam bot posting on this site, I dont believe every release needs a full on discussion. Maybe I just need to see something is available to buy and that's helpful as a collector. I dont want to speak for the rest of this "community" as you like to but I'm sure there are people on here who feel the same. You seem to be the only one who feels the need "to be an asshole and repurpose a thread for (your) entertainments sake" which is why I said you had a superiority complex, because you make the whole thing about you.

  14. 1 hour ago, Derek™ said:

I never said my opinion should be weighed over anyone else’s.  Where are you getting that from?  I said that I contribute to threads that interest me, be it with links or relevant discussions.

If you’ve only seen me “talk shit”, maybe listen to [what I’d call] better music so you can find my constructive posts in threads you wouldn’t otherwise bother with.

I read every thread if I'm bored enough, not just the music/bands I listen to, so I see your posts enough to be annoyed by them as much as you're annoyed by the person who started this thread. You just seem to have a superiority complex on this forum that your tastes should dictate what gets posted here and how, just seems pretty low to comment on every thread this person starts just to voice your disapproval. No one cares if you have better taste and even if you objectively do have better taste, that does not give you the right to police what gets posted here.

  15. 11 minutes ago, Derek™ said:

Fun fact: I’ve always cared about the content of threads that pertain to my interests.  There is no “all of a sudden”.  I shit on you because you’re actually a worthless addition to the forum.  This thread is a perfect example that showcases your sloppy copy-and-dump approach to sharing info.  Look how easy it was for people who actually give a shit about music to contribute something constructive and not just regurgitate a Facebook post.

You are clueless and will continue to be clueless.  Fucking garbo bot.

And your opinion about what gets posted on this forum is more important than anyone else's because....? I dont see you contribute new threads as much as I see you talk shit
