  1. So I found an ad on craigslist with a whole lot of equipment for sale. The lady is asking about $1800, and will only get rid of it in one shot. She wont piece it out. I need help determining if this is a good deal, there are 2 technics sl-1100a in the lot so I know as long as those are in good shape, that will recoup almost 1/3 of the cost. Here is the list: 1 Akai GX-600 DB Dolby System. 2 DBX Audio Video Program Route Selector Dav-600 G/Record VDP/VCR 3 Numark DM 1700T Stereo Pre-AMP Control Center 4-5 Tecnics by Panasonic - Direct, Drive Player System- SL - 1100A (two) 6 Panasonic - PV 7662 - Omnivision VHS - Dynamorphous, Metal Head - HI-Fi Stereo-Spatializer VCR Plus 7 Citation Sixteen Harman/Kardon 8 Harman/Kardon AVR25II Receiver 9 Soundcraftmen - AE2000 Real -Time Scan Analyzer, Equalizer 10 Soundcraftmen Preamplifier, Model DX 4000 11 SAE - Impulse Nose Reduction System 5000 12 Bose 901 Series VI active Equalizer 13 Radio Shack - Stereo Audio Source Selector 14 Nakamichi Research Inc. - Program Timer - DS-200 15 Rocoton - 16 Base Video Speaker (shown on picture on top of the wall unit) 17 Nakamichi 600 ZX Discrete Head Cassette Deck (similar, 670ZX in EBay) 18 Pioneer Mult-play CD CDV/LD Player CLD-M403 5 Disc CD-CDV Multi-play Lazer Disc 19 Yamaha Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Tuner TX-950-RS 20 JVC TD-W718 Double Cassette Deck 21 Sony Compact Disc Player - CDP-CX 355 Mega Storage 300CD, High Density Linear Converter System
  2. Hello I have no idea where to post this, so for that, I apologise. I just got given a sharp hifi midi system SG-FS30E, it was my girlfriend's mum's old record player from the 80s and she doesn't use it, now it's mine. Could anybody tell me anything about it? Is it any good? What cartridge does it come with? Will it scratch my records? I've googled and nothing comes up, just thought I'd ask here, surely someone must have seen one! Cheers.
  3. Ok, to start I would like to thank you all in advance for your assitance and consideration. I have been out of othe game for some time and just now have found myself going back to my roots. Mostly this brings back memories of my dad and his collection. Regardless I am encountered some issues. I decided to start with the Audio Techinca 120... figured it was as good a place to start given the price point. I have it runniing into my Onkyo AV receiver ... as is the case the RCA cables are too short so I have them coupled and into another set of wires then into my receiver's Phono input. I have a number of older records... I have cleaned them lightly the best I can. I notice when playing my records I get a momentary peak in audio that will then drop back down to normal. Sometimes the album will actually start high and then drop to what I have come to believe is normal. I am truly confused and would appreciate any assistance or direction you may be able to provide. Thank you.
  4. I'm probably missing an obvious one but can anyone think of a direct drive turntable that has a sub chassis in the Ariston, Linn, AR, Pink Triangle mould? I've got a few SL1200 copies that I've used for parts and am thinking about using one of the motor/bearing assemblies as the basis for a little project I have in my head. Problem is I can't think of another example of a suspended direct drive which usually means if no one else has done it it's a bad idea, that's never stopped me before though. The motor/bearing/control unit I have is quite compact.
  5. Hey guys, I'm looking at a Sony PS-LX57 that a family member of mine owns, and I'm wondering if anyone knew anything about it. I did a load of searching around the forums and the only mention of it I saw was a guy asking a question about a similar turntable's stylus, so I hope I'm not committing any capital offense by starting this thread. [Fingers crossed] I'm currently using an Audio-Technica AT-PL50, which is probably doing my records more harm than good. It's run through some shit Panasonic stereo (SA-PM91D) and out through some equally shitty Panasonic speakers, which don't appear to even have a model name/number on them. The Audio-Technica has a built-in preamp, I think. So, for the low-low price of potentially free, I'd probably be doing myself a service by upgrading to the Sony. I had been thinking about saving up my money for a Debut Carbon, but if the Sony will suit my needs (basically spinning NOFX records), I can put that money toward a preamp, monitor, speakers, more NOFX records, whatever. Anybody have any thoughts or advice on this? Thanks in advance. If/when I upgrade, what sort of monitor should I go for, etc.
  6. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I've been listening to vinyl now for about 3 years and I really love it. I have a pretty basic setup (pioneer pl-a45d TT / pioneer sa-5200 amp / and 4 speakers) and am trying to go to the next level slowly as I save money. This is my question, I currently have an automatic turn table and I personally love the automatic starting and stopping. Are there no TTs that would be considered audiophile that are automatic? One thing that concerns me is sometimes (it's random, not all the time) I have a problem with shaking and not having super steady hands. I'd like to go get something great but personally I would like it to be automatic though I think I could deal with it if it weren't. I read some good things about the vintage technics SL-1600. Does anyone know if this TT is any good? Is it considered audiophile quality? I was also considering about the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. Any thoughts / advice / help would be greatly appreciated.
  7. hi i have a sony ps lx 300 turntable hooked up to an old zenith receiver, i just noticed on my copy of deftones diamond eyes i can notice what sounds like a rpm variance, pitches going up and down noticeably, (its a 33 1/2 standard 12 inch vinyl brand new white press if that makes a difference) so the question is why, I'm new to this so have no idea of possible reason, is this likely the turntable or the vinyl or….etc any help or direction would be much appreciated thank you
  8. Hey all, I have upgraded one of the turntables in my house and this one has become extraneous. Time to find a good home for it. It's a Technics SL-B5 fully automatic belt drive turntable. It includes a Shure M195 cartridge with stylus. The stylus has definitely been used but it works and sounds great. The 45 adapter is also included. I have recently installed a new belt. I have also cleaned and refurbed the dust cover, which is in excellent condition, stays up when lifted and has no cracks. This is a stacking turntable, meaning it's a changer. You can load a number of records and have it play them automatically. I have never used this feature, but I am including the stacking spindle as part of the turntable. Here are a few pics: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1ij80o5v2v7id6o/2014-01-30%2021.32.40.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/t652kpcbr82499p/2014-01-30%2021.36.10.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/0dof2uk41fpob6v/2014-01-30%2021.35.53.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/nxed2rdl8890por/2014-01-30%2021.36.49.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/qa4w6a12g63bk67/2014-01-30%2021.36.26.jpg This turntable has been adult-owned and cared for and comes from a smoke-free environment. All features, including the strobe, speed control, and auto start / stop work perfectly. The only reason I am selling this is due to an upgrade. $100 plus buyer pays actual shipping costs. I can ship via USPS or UPS. I'd imagine UPS would be cheaper / safer but am flexible. PM me if you are interested. I will not hold the turntable. Thanks!
  9. I've got myself a DJ Technics SL 1200 (thanks to my mother's old hobbies), and I have it hooked up to my tiny kit guitar amp so far. I mean it sounds fine and I'll get some nice speakers from Goodwill soon probably, but I was looking at portable record players and of the reviews, all the trendy kids seem to like the sound and everything on the Crosley's (thanks Urban Outfitters), but I notice some older folk say the sound is shit. And I've been looking at some on EBay, like the Fisher-Price ones, and other older portable record players, even the battery operated ones (think Moonrise Kingdom). How's the sound on portable record players? Is there really any point if I own $500 turntables other than for ease of use and novelty?
  10. I just scooped a piece of turntable history for 10 bucks. A Sears Electronics multi changer made by BSR, just like the one I used to stack KISS records on in the mid-late 70's. Came armed with the classic 'Genuine Diamond LP stylus' and works great… except for one thing: the auto return doesn't automatically return because the needle doesn't lock into the inner return groove of most records. Reading online forums, I found mention of an 'arm detection adjustment screw' but have been unable to find anything that does this on my new ride. Otherwise, the thing works great… especially for stacking crap vinyl. Tips would be greatly appreciated... (similar, but not identical to the one pictured here)
  11. Hi everyone, I am brand new to vinyl and am looking for a cheap turntable to start playing my dad's old records on. I found this on Craigslist. http://kansascity.craigslist.org/msg/4265507916.html What do you think? Thanks!
  12. Selling my turntable: Pro-ject Essential Table Grado Prestige Green Cart Brand New Tone Arm Rewiring Includes dust cover, power supply, built-in pre amp, and original box with documents. Only selling this because I am upgrading my table. This table is only about 2 years old and is in excellent condition. Makes a great beginner hi-fi table, especially if you are just getting into starting your collection and you want to update that shit Crosley. Invested about $180 into the $300 table. Has about 200 hours of burn in time on the needle. I'm obviously not trying to get what I paid, but more about half. So if you want this set up for about $250, give me a shout. More pictures available if needed. Price is negotiable. Direct link to photos: Thanks! Direct links to photos: http://imgur.com/smzsdQc http://imgur.com/iQoHaeV http://imgur.com/iQBiaTh
  13. I recently just bought an Ion Pure LP Turntable (as well as just recently started buying vinyl instead of CDs) and am looking for speakers for the turntable. Pretty much I am looking for a decent set of speakers that will have clear audio. They don't have to be really high end or anything, just something to connect to the turntable via RCA and listen to records. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  14. I'm looking at getting into vinyl with Christmas money, but being a pastor's son, money is tight. On that note, I would like to know what the bare minimum would be to play a vinyl record without scratching it. I can get better equipment later; for now, I'd rather save some money to actually buy records. You know, start a collection first, then get a decent setup. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

  17. Barely used Ion Audio Profile Lp Usb Dj Turntable for sale. It works and sounds great. The digital files from the software are very good. Box and all cords, discs and papers included. $40. I can estimate shipping cost when I have a zip code to ship to. PM if you're interested. Thanx!
  18. So basically I want opinions/thoughts from people who know more than me about turntables. I've been listening to records for about 3 years now and I've only had this one turntable. Honestly, not really sure if what I have is great, good, or downright awful. I was given this 79 Technics by my dad--it's the one he bought when he moved out for his freshman year of college. Everything works great but I can say that I don't think it sounds amazing. 1979 Technics SL-Q3 (Fully Automatic Quartz-Locked Direct Drive) Other parts of my setup: *cheap Behringer pre-amp (probably $20 on Amazon) *10 year old Sony stereo receiver *simple Polk Audio desk speakers - How good is what I have? - How can I make what I have sound the best? - Am I truly missing out on anything? Feel free to tear into this if it sucks--I really have no idea!
  19. I recently stumbled upon Michael Fremer's review of the Pro-ject Essential in Analog Planet. The critique of said turntable is informative, but what I found most interesting is the comparison between it and the Carbon. Basically Fremer contends that the Essential is a decent entry-level turntable, but for $100 more, you get way more bang for your buck with the Carbon. I quote ... "Here's the thing: Pro-Ject was obviously trying to give folks a serious, well-made turntable for as little as possible and in that they have succeeded. However, the Carbon for $100 more is way better than $100 better. Listening to the Carbon without being able to see it, you'd neverknow it was a $399 turntable. But listening to the Essential without seeing it, you'd know it was inexpensive (not "cheap")." I've never heard either of these tables so I have no real opinion. Still, since both come up in the entry-level turntable discussion quite a bit on VC, I figured that some of you might find the review enlightening.
  20. I'm quite new to the world of vinyl and have limited knowledge about the mechanics of turntables in general. Here's the deal. This is my second LP-60 in less than a month and it seems either I'm not having the best of luck in purchasing a reasonably priced, entry-level turntable, or there is a defect with several units of this model. There is a very noticeable dip at a certain point of each revolution. I'm concerned for my records as my needle is dancing over each groove in a wave-like motion, swaying back and forth, yet providing what sounds like accurate pitch, tone, and speed. I'm betting most entry-level purchasers of these units are so enchanted with their new medium that things like this aren't noticed or addressed. I guess I'm partially guilty. I'm not finding tons of complaints about what I am experiencing with these 2 units, but I'm definitely not imagining this. I tried re-adjusting the belt, checking for debris (despite its newness), and every other conceivable adjustment and inspection. This is obviously not the desired performance of this machine, so I guess I'm forced to either chance the early degradation of my vinyl collection, or upgrade to an LP-120. I think I'll go with the latter as It seems to possess no redeeming quality, for me at least. Lesson learned. Has anyone else experienced complications with this model?
  21. So I was browsing around the internet for a new/used turntable for a decent price and stumbled up this: http://chattanooga.craigslist.org/ele/3661309217.html Seems like online reviews are alright for it. I want to make him an offer for just the turntable portion of it, but I have no idea what a good offer would be. I was thinking $100? Thoughts?
  22. Hello folks! For a few weeks now, my needle is jumping at the beginning of my records. Not all of them but a lot. I did not modify my turntable prior to this problem and no one else but me touched it. I thought the problem was mostly because I played Epitaph pressings but it's also occurring to previously fine records. My turntable is a Denon DP300-F with a cheap generic needle made for my stock cartridge and has been used for a year and a half without any problem (will be replaced eventually with a Grado Red). The needle is fine and I clean it once in a while with a dedicated solution. I also always brush my records and clean them when they need to so they're not the problem. I did reset the weight in the back of the tonearm and calibrated it again and again without success. I played with the anti-skating knob without success. The turntable is level with the ground and stable on my Expedit without anything else touching it. My speakers are separated on the floor and not touching the Expedit. I printed a protractor alignment paper and it seems fine but I ordered a real one with a mirror finish for exact calibration just in case. My needle seems to be just a little bit crooked on the side (very little) so maybe that's where the problem lies but it's always been like that and it's been fine since this recent problem. One thing I did not try yet is to put the needle on a blank record and check how it's tracking. Any other ideas are welcome to help me solve this problem. If you barely know anything about turntable settings, please refrain from making any witty remarks or suggestions. Thanks for your help!
  23. Hi all, vinyl newbie here. I have $1000 dollars to spend on an entire system as I have nothing currently. Via Craigslist I have found someone offering a 2006 Technics SL-1200MK2 that (according to the seller) has maybe 100 hours on it ("they have been sitting in storage for several years") and a Shure SC35C cartridge (which I understand to be a DJ cart and would need to be replaced/upgraded). The seller is asking $400 for it - I'm thinking I should jump on this rather than get a new Rega RP1 or Pro-Ject Debut Carbon or a Audio-Technica or Music Hall TT in the same price range, but wanted to get some other opinions.
