  1. OK, so it's been awhile since I've tampered with my setup and I'm ready to lay down some money on improvements. Right now I'm running a Music Hall 5.1 turntable with a (pretty standard and probably shitty comparatively) Onkyo TX-8255 receiver and some PSB Alpha B1 bookshelf speakers. I just purchased Sennheiser 6XX headphones from Massdrop, set to ship in December, and it got me thinking of my setup and what I can do to really get the most out of them. I'm guessing I should start with replacing the Onkyo receiver and was thinking of getting a Yamaha integrated amp in the $500-$600 range. I was also thinking of putting the money towards a dedicated headphone amp instead (or eventually in tandem) but don't know if I'll get the most out of the headphones if it's still running through the Onkyo. Suggestions? I'm open to any and all suggestions especially since I am fairly inexperienced when it comes to the finer points of setup. I'm willing to modestly invest and would like something that would last and obviously sound great. Thanks for any help and input.
  2. Hey you guys! I'm looking to get my first stereo receiver for my setup. I have a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon along with some Dali Zensor 3s to power. I'd love to stay around or under $300. I really want the Marantz PM6005 but it's out of my budget so I was looking at some Onkyo ones (A-9010 or A-9050). Let me know if you have any suggestions and thank you in advance!
  3. Hey guys, I just got a Mitsubishi DA-L90. It has a Phono input section on the back. I have the record player plugged into the phono inputs, and my two fisher monitors plugged into the Rec. Out (L/R). Theres also a CD/Aux. in that i tried plugging the monitors into. When the monitors are plugged into the Rec. out, i can hear the album playing (and not from the needle on the record player) however, you cant control the volume and its extremely faint (just a tiny bit louder than the needle). The volume, balance, and tone controls dont work at all. The Radio is doing the samething: i can slightly hear it coming from the monitors but none of the controls are doing anything. What do i do? Do i have something plugged in to the wrong place? My set up works fine with a different reciever, however i want to use this one because it also hold cassettes. Thanks for the help!!
  4. So last year i started a new job and the owner had a turntable and played records daily. After less then a week I was hooked and wanted to start a vinyl collection and have a nice setup. Now I'm far from being able to afford a $1000 setup or even a $500 setup. Im all about being patient and looking for the best deals which is what I did. My boss bought 2 vintage receivers and gave me one for free a Kenwood KR-3600 I was excited I love the vintage look. So I wanted to get a vintage turntable. Craigslist everything was $100+ and I didnt really have it. Well one day I was talking to a guy at an auction and told him i was looking for vinyl he tells me he will sell a collection a guy gave him along with a turntable for $60 I bought it right away. It was a Toshiba SR-255 Love the look. Also at the auction I managed to pick up an Polk Audio Monitor 60 for only $20. The Toshiba had no headshell so had to order it and the stylus off amazon Audio-Technica Universal Headshell (AT-HS1) and Audio-Technica Dual Magnet Phono Cartridge (AT95E). Im just wondering how decent my set up is. and what to improve first and with what. List again Kenwood KR-3600 Toshiba SR-255 Polk Audio Monitor 60 (only have 1 at the moment) Audio-Technica Dual Magnet Phono Cartridge (AT95E) Audio-Technica Universal Headshell (AT-HS1) I do get some humming when i have both left and right plugged into the receiver from the turntable. I do have the ground plugged in. I've tried reading the forums but I get confused pretty easy when I cant ask the questions from the beginning. Here are a couple pics as well
  5. Great little table top setup I'm getting rid of, only because I'm moving, and have a bigger setup now as well. Vintage Realistic Modulette Model #1201401 Mid-70's 15.25" across, 4.75" in height, 10" in depth 40 watts Mini table top speakers In the back, hookups for your turntable, tape deck, and even external speakers Works awesome if you have a small space and you're looking for something simple. Only $60ppd
  6. All things being equal (price, condition, etc.), which of the two vintage receivers in the thread title would you choose for use in a phono-only, two channel system used primarily with headphones? Which has the better phono stage?
  7. just snagged this guy and wow. this thing is amazing. super clear and powerful, and goes for very cheap resale. its rated at 130W Per but im thinking its closer to 100. Still powers these MTX AAL-2230s and Polk Monitor 60s very well. at under 100 dollars average resale, .08% Harmonic Distortion and a solid amount of inputs and outputs, this thing kicks ass. i highly recommend snagging one of these if you ever get the chance.
  8. I just purchased a U-Turn Audio Basic Turntable and am in the process of getting my audio system required for it. I have the Bose V 201 Speakers and plan on purchasing a Yamaha RX-V375 5.1 Channel AV Receiver. Will I also need a pre-amp to act as the mediator between my table and receiver or can I just plug the table's RCA cables into the Audio-In of the receiver? Just want to make sure my setup is good to go once my table gets here. Thanks for any help.
  9. Hi, so I currently have a Audio Technica LP120 (I know it's not the best thing in the world) and I'm planning on upgrading the cartridge to the Ortofon 2M Red. The thing is I run some powered speakers through the pre-amp in the TT and I'm wondering if it would be smarter to get myself a nice receiver/pre-amp to improve sound quality over getting a new cartridge. I also plan on getting a nicer pair of speakers, but I figure those can wait. Thank you for any advice you can give me!
  10. So I found an ad on craigslist with a whole lot of equipment for sale. The lady is asking about $1800, and will only get rid of it in one shot. She wont piece it out. I need help determining if this is a good deal, there are 2 technics sl-1100a in the lot so I know as long as those are in good shape, that will recoup almost 1/3 of the cost. 11. Hello! I had a few questions about what could be happening with my setup. I have a Technics SL 1200 M3D running into a Cambridge Audio - Azur 651P - MM/MC Phono Preamplifier that goes into an Onkyo TX-NR616 7.2 Channel THX Select2 Plus Certified Network A/V Receiver. My speakers are some Sony speakers that my cousin let me have. With my receiver I can attach a bluetooth dongle that lets me stream audio to it from my phone over bluetooth. While using this I noticed that the volume of that audio would be much louder than when I would play the same songs from my records. So I'm wondering what could be the problem that I have? A friend of mine told me my pre amp should have some controls but there are none that I know of the one I have. I currently have to crank my receivers volume to the high 50's - 60's in order to enjoy it at the same level as streaming from my phone through bluetooth where I have the volume in the 30's/40's Pre Amplifier - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0079OA0UU/ref=oh_details_o07_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Receiver - http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR616-Channel-Certified-Receiver/dp/B0077V88W2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1390069803&sr=1-1&keywords=Onkyo+TX-NR616+7.2+Channel+THX+Select2+Plus+Certified+Network+A%2FV+Receiver
  12. so...i recently have acquired a pair of MTX AAL2230s and i already have a pair of polk monitor 60s. my question is, in the vintage receiver world, how many watts per channel would i need to safely powere these guys? ive been looking at a technics sa-500 receiver to power these, which puts out 55 wpc. i know the MTX's take up a buttload of power. HELP. trying to find the right wattage is a headache.
  13. My receiver for my turntable has too many issues, I have had no luck finding one at a thrift store and I don't have hundreds of dollars to buy one new. Help?

  15. Hello there, I just got an old turntable with only four jacks for speaker wires... those thick wires where each speaker has a positive wire and a negative wire... and I want to run it trough a receiver with RCA inputs so I can adjust the bass/treble and hook up two pairs of speakers. I've been toiling over Google and having a surprisingly difficult time finding any information on this. Yesterday I went to a thrift store and bought a pair of small speakers with RCA cables on them, removed the cables from the speakers, stripped them and plugged them into the turntable and ran them to the receiver. The sounds is atrocious, probably owing to the fact that these cables are extremely thin and not made for this purpose... Is there any way to make an RCA cable, or buy one, or am I out of luck? Thanks.
  16. Hey there. I am getting an Onkyo TX-1500 and I was told the lamps would need to be replaced. I have tried looking but don't really have experience with this kind of thing. I have seen a lot of led lamps in vintage receivers that look really good but I don't know exactly what they are called, what "size" to get or where to get them. If someone could help me out and let me know what I need to get I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks!
  17. So I'm looking to upgrade my amp to a tube unit. But I'm trying to stay reasonable with a price so my girl doesn't flip her wig, and spending $1,500+ on a new amp just isn't in the cards for now (plus my current receiver works great). I've seen this unit before, and it seems to have good reviews. Any thoughts/owners out there? Cheers! http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAQIN-MC-100B-KT88-x-4-Vacuum-Tube-Hi-end-Tube-Integrated-Amplifier-SV-PUS-/261018870709?pt=US_Home_Audio_Amplifiers_Preamps&hash=item3cc5efe3b5#ht_5602wt_956
  18. Anyone out there know anything about old yamaha receivers? I have one that's still kicking; the screen has just gone out though. I've heard they have bulbs but I surely haven't found one. Don't want to take it apart too much before I figure out what I'm doing. Anyone have any tips? It's an RX-700u. 2 pics: http://i.imgur.com/jDSgt.jpg http://i.imgur.com/kR2X4.jpg
