Minneapolis: Record Store Day

Recommended Posts

Where/what is everyone's plans for Record Store Day in the Minneapolis area?

I am the manager/music buyer at Down In The Valley in Golden Valley... we ordered literally every RSD release and our fill has been decent from what I've seen (we were shorted on stuff like all stores, of course).  We aren't quite as busy as some of the Minneapolis stores.  We also don't let everyone in for a free-for-all or let people buy all/every copy as their number is called.  We take the line in when we open and everyone goes in the order of the line, you can pick 3 titles you want (no doubles) and then you can get back into line for more. We try to be diplomatic and fair... we also ordered a lot of stuff some of the smaller titles other stores probably didn't: Mad Men, Paranorman, Pagans, True Widow, Krieg, Christian Death, Integrity, Bis, Lemonheads, Duane Eddy, etc.   We don't let employees have first dibs either!

We'll have 20% off used vinyl & CD's on Saturday, donuts & coffee for the early-birds, we'll be giving some goodie bags away and tickets to First Avenue shows too!

So yeah, just wanted to let everyone know about what we have going on and find out what other people have planned for RSD in the Minneapolis area!  Aside from obviously being at my store, I'm going to make an effort to stop by Extreme Noise on my way to or home from work, but it's such a busy day I don't know if I will make it there or not.

My take for new people:

The last time I did RSD I wanna say two years ago, I went to Electric Fetus about 90 minutes before opening, and the line was already around the back of the store (100+ people) and steadily growing. Waited for about 20 minutes, said fuck this, and went to Treehouse. Ended up tenth in line or so, got everything I was looking for and picked up a few other things. Whatever you do, DON'T GO TO THE FETUS unless you want the full unruly crowd experience. It's the only record store a lot of people know, so you get all the dads and Crosley types from the suburbs. They have everybody take a number to be able to enter the special releases section and they have limits to prevent assholery, but it's just not worth it unless you're early enough to get a low number. Sleep in a little and go somewhere else. Treehouse is horribly set up (everything in those new arrival bins just inside the door) but it's a tiny store, I don't know that it could ever not feel crowded.

Cheapo in uptown usually gets a lot of stuff, never been there at opening time but they usually have a decent amount by the time I get there around 10 or 11.

Fifth Element is useful if you want to guarantee you'll be able to pick up the Rhymesayers exclusives (Atmosphere EP, Oliver Hart 3xLP, also they'll have Dessa's Castor the Twin LP which no one seems to be talking about) plus big discounts on a lot of their stock (mostly rap/funk/soul, obviously. Good time to pick up that Numero Group box set you've been eyeing. They only carry RSD releases that are consistent with what they usually carry, so you're not going to find the Cake box set or Nirvana tribute here. Also be ready to be surrounded by Atmosphere stans who wore their Fifth Element shirt to Fifth Element so you know they're not a poseur. They also usually have special guests drop in - Blueprint rang me up a couple years ago. Also deM atlaS is performing this year and he is sooo goood.

Never been to Down in the Valley, and my wife is working on Saturday so I have the morning free...

This will be my first Record Store Day experience and my first time in a record store since I started collecting vinyl. As for RSD releases, I have my eye on the Songs: Ohia box, Xiu Xiu, MGMT, and maybe Scott Pilgrim. I'm also excited to browse through some non-RSD stuff as well. I'm not getting anywhere before doors open and was planning on going to the Fetus (the only record store I've been to), but that sounds like a bad idea. Down in the Valley sounds pretty cool though. Any advice on what to do?

You have to get to places early to get the best fill.  Especially something like the Songs Ohia boxset which is pretty limited and not one of the bigger mainstream releases.  Last year the line at Electric Fetus started at 3am and Down In The Valley (Golden Valley location) at 6am.   I was pretty surprised at what we (Down In The Valley) had left after RSD last year (Atmosphere 7" for example), but it's a total crap shoot, you don't know what will sell better than others and you don't really know how many copies of stuff stores will get.

More stuff showed up today and lots of stuff is super cool (Taaang! 7" boxset, Dinosaur Jr boxset, etc.). We have a lot of VC-type stuff (Mae, Devo, Integrity, Neko Case, Grant Hart, Tim Timebomb, Sick of It All, Street Dogs, True Widow, etc.) etc that the other stores may not have picked up, along with decent quantities on some of the hotter titles like Nirvana, Atmosphere, Dessa, Cake, LCD Soundsystem, etc.).  Plus we'll have free donuts & coffee for the earlybirds as well as grab bags for the first few people in the line.  We'll also giveaway 5 pairs of tickets to First Avenue shows, a Johnny Cash "Out Among The Stars" LP TEST PRESSING!, and a bunch of other prizes and goodies. Down In The Valley, 8020 Olson Memorial Hwy, Golden Valley, MN 55427!

Pretty rough experience for me this year.  Did a sweep of the entire metro starting from the NW Maple Grove Down In The Valley, was in line when they opened just a few people back.  Then on to Crystal & Golden Valley locations.  South to Uptown Cheapo, Electric Fetus, Treehouse, also called Know Name & Roadrunner south of that area.  Eastward to St Paul Cheapo, Into The Void, Eclipse.  Called Mr. Zeros who directed me to Agharta.  All on the hunt for the August Burns Red release, and at the end of the day went home empty handed.  Thought for sure somewhere along the trek I'd spot one.  Got a jump on the day & everything.

Then the Wild lost.  What gives??

Goddamn dude I'm so sorry.  If I would have seen you wanted this so bad, I would have grabbed the one and only copy I saw at an Exchange today.  Hopefully it get's a wider pressing soon though or you can find one for cheap!  I'm sure someone can help you out here.

Hey, it's all good.  I went home real disappointed & felt defeated, but what can you do?  The sun still came up the next morning.  Last year was my first RSD, and doing a very similar Twin Cities sweep covering similar ground, I was able to get I think 5 of 5 that I wanted, I had a feeling this year only wanting 1 thing my luck would take a turn for the worse.  I guess that makes it all the better when you do strike gold on another day.

If you, or anyone else sees one though, I'm all over that.  August Burns Red tweeted a couple times about it, and got lots of replies, by far the majority, of people disappointed they were unable to get a copy.  So maybe a future press is in store.  Just hope it's the near future.

I had never been to Down In The Valley before yesterday. They had damn near everything and the wait wasn't too long. (plus there was some cool stuff to look at on the way) Definitely coming back next year!

Which location did you go to, and what time did you get there?  Just out of curiosity.  I'm assuming Golden Valley?  I didn't have the same experience & was only about 6 back from the front of the line in Maple Grove.  I really only had my heart set on the one record, but had 2-3 others I would have bought had I found them, and didn't see any, at any of their locations.  I heard Golden Valley had the most & that was the one I went to last of the 3 locations, so maybe they were just that thinned out by the time I got there.  Which was probably only 30-45 minutes after they opened.
