dantheriver
$20 single LP. Maybe if this label pressed a decent number of copies and cut the silly shit (A logo-stamped oolong or jasmine tea bag; Guava candy) they could sell their single LP releases at a decent price. That being said I have never heard of Alex G but I liked that song and now I'm going to go pay $20 for this LP, so they win.

Yeah, their prices for LPs (and 5 dollars shipping is ridiculous too) are crazy but they have such a cult following with all the Sam Ray projects and associated people that they have no reason to lower prices. drownmeinestrogen
Prices like these is the reason I'm really cutting back on collecting, that said I pre-ordered it on purple, so fuck me I guess.

This dude runs the label out of his own place, he's barely getting by off these releases if anything they just pay for the next projects pressings... dkrtz
I'm pretty upset these are so expensive. Been telling myself all year I'd order his debut but of course it drops when I'm in between jobs. At least I secured boring ecstasy I guess.

So does every other diy label that charges $12 for an LP Skeletal Lightning, batnoises, rtw88 and 1 other
dkrtz
20 for Alex's full length (which I doubt hits far past the half hour mark in length) really is steep as hell. I thought it was merited for Boring Ecstasy since it was an anniversary release for the entire label that will never get repressed....they're already talking about maybe repressing this though. 15 would be a lot more reasonable. And hopefully they start doing less limited runs with all this exposure. batnoises

parkinglot
I would order releases from these guys if a single non gatefold LP wasn't $20. I don't need my records to come with an $8 cup of tea.
dkrtz
Thanks for all the support and kind words everyone, we really appreciate it. If this was sarcasm I'd like you to know I at least am a pretty big fan of the music you put out on your label. Like I previously mentioned I did jump on Boring Ecstasy and am stoked to receive it. I will however admit to being a bit scorned over missing out on this Alex G physical pressing....but I at least realize that with the way you run things I will still be able to hear the album for free digitally upon release, and in light of that I will maintain high respect for the label. Not being sarcastic at all. We hugely appreciate anyone who's taken the time to check out the Alex G song, any of our back catalog of releases, or taken the extra step and purchased any vinyl (or tapes) that we've helped to put out. I would never be snarky or sarcastic about something like that, those kinds of gestures are literally the lifeblood of Orchid Tapes that help us to continue what we're doing and putting out more releases. I know a lot of people are used to paying a bit less for LPs from "DIY" labels, but this is how it breaks down for us: Between doing music as Foxes in Fiction, occasionally mastering music and running Orchid Tapes, I have no other forms of income at this point. As of the past three months or so, I usually spend about 10+ hours on day-to-day operations related to the label, and a bit more around time periods where we're shipping large amounts of vinyl. We try to spend a lot of time being very fastidious over the physical packages that we send out to people (hand-written notes, stickers, hand-stamped envelopes and tea bags) because this is the kind of stuff that makes the process special to us, and hopefully to the people that buy things from Orchid Tapes. Because this can be such a time consuming process and because of the time required for my other 'jobs', I don't have any time left over to pursue any sort of employment that would provide a regular stream of income for things like food / rent / future Orchid Tapes releases. We put all our releases for free on Bandcamp because it's something we strongly believe in (with all the donations going back into purchasing download credits) so we make basically $0 on digital sales at this point in time. At this point in time it's just not viable for us to charge any less and still afford to be able to put out physical releases (as well as pay the artists we're releasing music for) and still like, have a place to live and work. Maybe in time when we're a little bit more established and have different avenues figured out for making actual money, we'll be able to charge less. We're not trying to rip anyone off, we're just trying release beautiful things that we can be really proud of and charge what we think is fair to both us as a label, our artists, and the people who are choosing to support us. plasma36, Ballisticgoat, batnoises and 3 others
dkrtz
More power to you guys. If you repress whenever I have income I will happily buy a copy. I dig his music as well as many of the other artists on the label (including your own stuff). I'm just too poor to hang right now. But I still have the shirt and slipmat bookmarked for later, so my money is destined for you whether its via Alex G or not lol.
Out of Breath Records
Orchid Tapes is great man, they consistently put out great music, have great communication and customer service (I had a seam split on one of my REA copies and they sent a new jacket with the pink one), and are just overall a cool couple of dudes. I don't think anyone realizes for those who don't put records out or have looked at quotes, these limited presses cost more than say a run of 1000, which should be pretty obvious. And that combined with the reasons stated give alot of reason for the price, plus I bet the living cost in New York isn't the cheapest. parkinglot
Why not just press say 1000 instead of 250-500? These releases sell out very fast, so there is obviously demand, and the difference in price from a run of 500 compared to 1000 is hardly anything, isn't it? batnoises

What I pay for a 2 bedroom apartment can get me my own house down south. Im basically paying my landlords mortgage.
