In one interview, I'm pretty sure Gerard said when forming MCR that he wanted to do only three albums and move on. He wanted to end the band after TBP. Contractual obligations are a real bitch to creative efforts. Aside from paying bills or whatever, it could also be that MCR signed a three-album deal with Reprise, thinking they could buy their way out of it after album #2 or that Reprise wouldn't take the option for the third one, but Reprise was like "lol nah, did you see the sales for Black Parade? You're making that third album" and Gerard was like "aight, fuck it, let's make a damn electro-Bowie MCR album or some shit" ...and then they and the label proceeded to market it and talk about it as if MCR actually wanted to write it.
