PO: Iron Maiden 1980's Era Represses

Recommended Posts

Following on from last year's Picture Disc pressing, Iron Maiden are releasing their 80's albums on black vinyl.

Iron Maiden, Killers & The Number Of The Beast will be released on 22nd September.

Piece Of Mind, Powerslave & Live After Death will be released on 20th October.

Somewhere In Time & Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son are TBC.

Still no official announcement from Maiden, or any details of a boxset, like they did for the Picture Discs, but the first 6 records are all available for pre-order from amazon. Very reasonable prices too (£17.08 each for the first 3 on Amazon UK!)

People on the fan club have been posting about European sites having pre-orders, so I'd imagine they will get a US release.

Just hope they continue repressing their back catalogue. The last 4 albums need a black vinyl release, and the Blaze-era albums badly need a repress!

I'm gonna guess they're the new reissues because they're cheaper than the picture discs. I tweeted them to find out, if they even know yet. Still don't seem all that cheap.

I wouldn't say they are cheap, but I'm not surprised by the price either (when you consider what they cost of the picture discs are).

You can pick up a mint POM for around $12 if you look. Mine was bought used for $10, basically brand new, and sounds awesome.

Those picture disc reissues, on the other hand, were transferred digitally from the already brickwalled remasters. Even without the surface noise, they still sound like ass compared to the fantastic OPs.

I would love for Maiden to go back and truly master these reissues for vinyl, but my guess is it's gonna be the same overly-compressed sound as the latest CD remasters. They'll sound marginally better since they're not picture discs, but that's about it. Hope I'm wrong tho.

The last Maiden album I'm really looking for is Killers, but I'm with filthyrich, you can come up on these albums for less than $15 if you're patient.

Wouldn't mind picking up a Somewhere In Time or SSoaSS at some point, but my Maiden collection is like my Sabbath collection, I feel good about the prices I've paid for older pressings so far, and I prefer the older pressings for sound quality and for whatever reason I just think I should get the older ones if I can.

Snagged Number of the Beast for like $8 at a record store years ago, grabbed Piece of Mind for free in a big collection somebody was giving away, and I lucked out and a dude sold me Powerslave, Metallica - Kill 'Em All and ...And Justice For All about a year ago for $25 total on Craigslist.

I think the one I paid most for was a green copy of S/T that my wife got me for christmas. I think it was like...$12?

Just keep your eyes open and your feelers out! You'll find the better pressings of these for less than these sell for.

Yeah, POM was a few years back, but our store will get in Maiden vinyl semi-regularly and sells it for reasonable prices. Plus I have an employee discount there. (HA!)

I snagged Live After Death for $15, SOT for $13, and a nice German press of S/T for $20. And a couple of the 12"s for $13 each as well... Those can be pricey but they're well-worth it, 45 RPM and the sound is HUGE. (Plus that amazing cover art. I'm gonna post pics now in fact.)

And my friend recently snagged SSOASS at the other local store for $20. I'm hunting that one myself. It's all about patience.

And FYI I also snagged the pic-disc comp (Somewhere Back In Time) used, and that made me swear off the new reissues. Terrible sound on that one.

I was able to grab the Canadian press of Powerslave a while back on EBay for 20PPD. Sounds excellent. It's currently the only Maiden I have on wax.

Powerslave had been the hardest for me to come across for a while and was also my favorite for a while as it was my introduction to Maiden.

I may grab a copy of Killers off Discogs soon if I don't come upon one in store. It's never suuuuper expensive, but I hate dropping $20 on any older record. (Buying Sleep's Holy Mountain recently nearly killed me. ;))

CLASSIC 80S VINYL REISSUES ON THE WAY

Published: Aug 26, 2014

Parlophone Records (BMG/INgrooves Music Group for the USA) will follow the 2012/13 IRON MAIDEN vinyl picture disc reissues of the first eight Iron Maiden albums, which spanned the 1980s, with brand new pressings of the albums in heavyweight 180g black vinyl.

In conjunction with these premium album releases, a strictly limited one-off run of the 7” singles from each respective album will be made available. These highly collectable black vinyl singles will be cut from the original analogue master tapes. Released in replica artwork packaging, they are sure to become a must-have item for fans, collectors and anyone who missed out first time round.

The albums will also be cut from the original analogue master tapes and packaged in identical artwork to the initial 1980’s releases.  As a bonus, the first batch of album releases (Iron Maiden/Killers/The Number Of The Beast) will also be made available in a Collector’s Box sized to house all 8 albums. This package will be a strictly limited edition and available while stocks last.

The records will be released chronologically across a two month period starting October 13th (14th USA) with the first 3 albums (Iron Maiden/Killers/The Number Of The Beast) and the seven corresponding 7” singles:

Running Free b/w Burning Ambition

Sanctuary b/w Drifter (Live) and I’ve Got The Fire (Live)

Women In Uniform b/w Invasion

Twilight Zone/Wrathchild double A side

Purgatory b/w Genghis Khan

Run To The Hills  b/w Total Eclipse

The Number Of The Beast b/w Remember Tomorrow (Live)

Followed by:

October 27th (28th USA): Piece Of Mind, Powerslave and Live After Death and the six corresponding 7” singles:

Flight Of Icarus b/w I’ve Got The Fire

The Trooper b/w Cross-Eyed Mary

2 Minutes To Midnight b/w Rainbow’s Gold

Aces High b/w King Of Twilight

Running Free (Live) b/w Sanctuary (Live)

Run To The Hills (Live) b/w Phantom Of The Opera (Live)

November 24th (25th USA): Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son and the six corresponding 7” singles:

Wasted Years  b/w Reach Out

Stranger In A Strange Land b/w That Girl

Can I Play With Madness b/w Black Bart Blues

The Evil That Men Do b/w Prowler ‘88

The Clairvoyant  b/w The Prisoner (Live)

Infinite Dreams (Live) b/w Killers (Live)

The release of these high quality, black vinyl records offers optimum choice to fans who would like to own a piece of Maiden’s authentic 1980’s vinyl sound, or for those simply wanting to rediscover this much loved, iconic format. Coupled with the end of the Maiden England World Tour which began in North America in 2012 and finished last month at Knebworth Park’s Sonisphere Festival, this now completes Maiden’s 1980’s touring and catalogue reissues cycle, so the band are free to focus on their dynamic future plans.

I'd rather see them make a collectors box to house all of the 7" singles than the LPs, but still cool that they are doing the same type of box as they did with the Picture Discs.

IIRC, the box with the first 2 Pic Discs was pretty reasonable from Amazon UK....(just looked it up, it was a little over $66 with the conversion).
