The STAR WARS Thread

He did, he wanted to join up with his friends, particularly Biggs, who he met back up with later, prior to the battle with the deathstar [rip biggs]

Ok, I try not to be super-nerd but Luke undoubtedly wanted to join The Imperial Naval Academy. Yes, Biggs went before him. Biggs trained in the Imperial Naval Academy on Prefsbelt. He later defected along with I believe two other cadets in a stolen Frigate.

Many have argued that the contradiction between Luke's early stated hatred of the Empire and his desire to join The Academy is irreconcilable. Personally, I think it makes plenty of sense. He was a young kid on a desolate farm who would do anything to get off Tattoine including joining the military.

Some of this stuff is explained in other media surrounding Star Wars but you can just check out Wookiepedia whenever you are confused. Here is the entry on Prefsbelt that explains it all better than me:

re: the stormtrooper clone question

I thought the same thing, so I googled it and this is what I found:

"By the time the Galactic Civil War began in earnest, Jango Fett's clones were heavily supplanted by clones based on a variety of templates around 9 BBY,[13] followed shortly after by enlisted Humans.[19] Thus, the Fett clones were ironically reduced to a minority status after years of virtually filling the stormtrooper ranks in its entirety."

and

"Despite the influx of new troopers from various sources, the ranks remained dominated by Human males, thus reflecting the New Order's Human High Culture. By 0 BBY, roughly one-third of the stormtroopers were clones based on the Fett template, while recruits steadily became the majority within the Stormtrooper Corps.[20]"

More here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Stormtrooper

Yeah Vader and the Emperor opened it up to humans to fill the roles in the ranks, except for Vader's own battalion (the 501st) which he kept primarily clones who were with him throughout the clone wars and during the switch to the empire shenanigans.  Dude still had sentiment.

Haha yea, I recently posted this on FB in response to this ridiculous discussion. It's insane people can go mad about something like this. They surely don't know their Star Wars very well. Far from all the stormtroopers are clones, ever since the galatic empire was formed they started to recruit from the general public. It's like people just want something to complain/bitch about because of this whole ordeal with disney. I think the teaser was quite interesting, I'm definitely excited. So let's see how the movie turns out :)

I want to dive into expanded universe stuff. I hear the Thrawn Trilogy is pretty good. Any suggestions?

My favorite was always Shadows of the Empire

Both solid choices, I think these were my first forays into the expanded universe as a teenager.

I actually really enjoyed a lot of the X-Wing books too, Wedge and Coran are badasses.

I've done Shadows as a kid and love the game and book. What X-Wing books?

I'm not saying the prequels are great (or good) but if you can take the time to read all of it, this blew my mind at how expansive Ep I-VI really are: http://www.starwarsringtheory.com/

There's so much I didn't know

(I sound kinda crazy, but seriously, read it!)

This is bonkers. I'm really enjoying it.

They're all about Rogue Squadron, they're great! Lots of cool characters, some from the movies, some not. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Wedge Antilles.

No prob, man. I ripped through those bad boys in high school. I think Star Wars books were pretty much all I read.

There was one where Luke was stuck on an abandoned Dreadnaught class cruiser that I really enjoyed too. Something about a Jedi transferred her soul into the ship, or something? Good shit.
