PO: Locrian - Infinite Dissolution

Recommended Posts

Question is do I sell out and pick up the /250 on silver, or wait and dump money on the /100 clear?

Been there. I actually got a killer deal on a clear copy of the last Locrian record. It's one of two Relapse-clear variants I own, and it was only $20 or so above retail cost.

But that electric blue, this time around. Hot damn.

Very excited about this, the last album and their Mamiffer-collaboration were amazing. Love the direction these guys are evolving in.

That cover just might be for a new Linkin Park album though..

Where'd you guys get info on the clear /100? Wasn't able to snag a clear of their last album unfortunately.

Relapse does a clear /100 for every release.  It's the friends and family variant and aren't officially for sale, although they do usually post a few on their discogs for a steeper price.

I agree with the cover art being a little lame, especially compared to how fantastic the Return to Annihilation artwork was.  I grabbed the silver, but I'm considering the blue as well.

I'm in the same boat as you guys regarding the cover, at first glance though the first thing that came to mind was the new Rosetta artwork. I imagine there is some connection between the symmetric-kaleidoscopic vibe of the Return To Annihilation music video and that of the new artwork.

Album teaser is up here if you guys haven't already listened. Hopefully there are some tracks that really capture me like Eternal Return and Return To Annihilation. Those few seconds of Heavy Water sound amazing.

If I can land a clear as reasonably priced as I did their last, it will be money well spent.

That blue looks great!  I'm off today, plan on spending it listening to this.

Yeah the icy blue does go nicely with the artwork, but I'm still not sold on the cover art. Too many 'nu-metal band gone serious'-vibes. It does make more sense next to the other art and in the context of the album though, so it might grow on me eventually.

^ Nice!  I'm hoping to find a copy of Drenched Lands for an OK price one of these days.  I have the CS to tide me over.  I'm missing a few 7"s, but I've got most of their vinyl releases.  Some of the CS releases had a pretty small run, so I don't know if I'll realistically ever have a complete collection sadly.

The initial CD-Rs are the hardest to find.

Holy shit...that collection.

I reckon they might get around to repressing some of those in the future now that ID is deemed to gather some huge praise and attention to them.

I listened to the first track streaming the other day and was blown away. Instantly knew that this would be some greatness. Can definitely look past that artwork with an album so good. Perhaps it was done to tie in with what they've been speaking on about the concept of the album - the complexity of the sculpture symbolizing man's inherent incapability to conceive of an end to civilization?

*Edit - scratch that. Here's an excerpt from their CVLT Nation interview

A very strong visual aesthetic complements this dystopian narrative. I really love the covers for both Return to Annihilation and The Clearing/The Final Epoch; they remind me of the desolation of a Tarkovsky movie. Infinite Dissolution has a much more vibrant, futuristic cover (created by David Altmejd) although no less dystopian. Can you tell us more about the visual side of Locrian and why you decided to work with Altmejd on for your latest album art?

Terence: Thank you, Stalker is one of my favourite films of all time. I taught a class on Tarkovsky once. Well, I have always felt that when I was young the album covers of say a band like Sonic Youth could turn you on to artists like Mike Kelley or Gerhard Richter. To me, that was inspiring – to be tuned in to these contemporary artists and, this being before the internet, if you went to a museum you could maybe find their work. It felt like you were in on this secret world. I have thought about that a lot. Anyway, so working with artists is very important to us, whether it be Scott Treleaven or Richard Misrach. David Altmejd is an artist I’ve admired for years, and in the studio I bring a lot of work to put up or look at. His work was there, it just felt somehow huge and intimate. It fit the themes in this weird way. The cover piece is titled “The Eye” and is very threatening, though it is beautiful.

Steven: Just to add to that, the sculpture on the cover is both vibrant and grim at the same time, there is still a hint of decay and chaos to it. If you look closely you’ll notice it’s not as pristine as one might think from a distance.
