"Rated R for graphic violence and strong language throughout, sexual content, and graphic nudity"

Yeah, not clear enough. There has to be a better way to know if this movie is appropriate for a 9 year old.

To be fair the original poster clearly just didn't pay attention to the rating.  Now her friend who commented is on a whole new level of stupid.

I just don't understand how people are ignorant to ratings. My mom monitored that shit like a hawk, it sucked. Luckily my dad was cool enough to do shit like take me to see The Matrix on opening night.

When I worked at Hollywood video there we're a lot of people who would come back furious that the movie they rented wasn't appropriate for their children. I had to put a sign under Pan's Labyrinth like "This movie is not for children, it is rated R. It is in Spanish with English subtitles and only available in widescreen. There will not be a dubbed full screen version available at any point. No refunds."

That's awesome.  Can't say I recall that ever happening when I worked at Hollywood video, but I did have quite a few porn dvd's accidentally returned in our cases.  It was always funny to call the customer and ask them to bring in the correct disc.

It's appalling how little originality there is in the movie industry. Hot on the heels of Deadpool's success, I can only imagine how many edgy superhero movies are in the works with maximum grit and lewdness being the selling points.

And as a kid, the theater's ticket seller would explicitly state that a movie was rated PG-13 or R whenever my parents would take me to the movies. (They also wouldn't dream of letting me see something like Deadpool until I was in my mid-teens.) The fact someone would be oblivious enough to accidentally take a 9 year-old to see it... is just wild to me. Is it the "superhero costume" from the previews? The fact it's Marvel? They make comic books, right? And comics are okay for kids, right? Oof.

My better half enjoyed the comics in her youth, but we both have reservations about seeing it. Not to sound pretentious, but a lot of the people I don't trust with these kind of movies – comic junkies who insist that all the Spiderman sequels and reboots are worth seeing – have been praising it to high heaven, and it leaves me skeptical. I'm not implying that I'm "too intelligent" to enjoy it, or any bullshit like that. I'm just hoping it's more than slow-motion gunfights, sexual puns, cheeky-crude one liners, and 4th-wall bending – the latter of which I find to be pretty cheesy, even if it's always been Deadpool's thing.

Is there more to it than that?

Going into the movie I knew it was rated R, had sexual content, and was supposed to be a "true to Deadpool" movie so I assumed it wasn't going to be for kids in any way. But I was kinda surprised at just how "rated R" the movie was. I expected the jokes and whatnot but some of the more sexual scenes I totally did not expect. Basically I expected the studio to kinda soften it a bit, but they really went for it with this one which I fully appreciate.

I remember someone taking me to see Blade 2 when it was released in 2002 (I was 10) and loving it. That movie was rated R and was probably my favorite "super hero" movie for a long time. But it shows not all "R" ratings are created equal. I hope they continue with less restrictions from a story telling standpoint. I think the fans have proven that having a movie labeled "super hero" doesn't imply necessity for a young audience.

I give them one or two more kinda successful R rated big budget superhero movies (nowhere near Deapool levels of box office) before there's another Punisher: Warzone flop and they go back to PG13 almost across the board. We'll still get the ocassional R rated comic book movie like we do now, but I don't see it being a long term profitable trend.

It won't be as easy to exploit as the 3D trend was after Avatar, so I doubt we see oversaturation before it tapers off.

I could also be completely wrong and we'll hear Loki say "whiny cunt" instead of "mewling quim" in Avengers 6 or whatever.

Not really?  But I'm not sure exactly what else you'd want out of something like Deadpool.

That being said, it's a well crafted movie.  Good pacing, Ryan Reynolds nails the character, the whole good vs evil thing was NOT clear cut (which I liked), it was consistently funny, and it left a fair bit open to a sequel (in a good way).
