What bands have you spent the most time listening to?

Recommended Posts

This question's always bugged me!  I use last.fm as much as possible, and obviously this excludes vinyl, but it bases listens to total song plays, not total length of all songs listened to.

I wrote a little web app tonight that takes your iTunes library and finds out what artists you listen to most, by taking track length and multiplying it by play count.

http://www.jacobraccuia.com/most_listened.php

So if you use iTunes, check it out and post your most listened to artists! ( note: if you have a tooon of songs, it might time out.  it worked fine for me at 6000 songs, god knows how it'd handle 40k )

here are mine:

Total time spent listening to music: 292 days 2 hours 19 minutes 59 seconds
  1. Mogwai: 5228 total plays - 18 days 5 hours 39 minutes 5 seconds
  2. Okkervil River: 4992 total plays - 15 days 3 hours 5 minutes 50 seconds
  3. La Dispute: 4038 total plays - 11 days 7 minutes 29 seconds
  4. The Decemberists: 3164 total plays - 10 days 31 minutes 34 seconds
  5. Brand New: 3145 total plays - 9 days 5 hours 58 minutes 11 seconds
  6. The Flashbulb: 4638 total plays - 8 days 23 hours 45 minutes 27 seconds
  7. The Dear Hunter: 2509 total plays - 7 days 21 hours 41 minutes 29 seconds
  8. Manchester Orchestra: 2412 total plays - 7 days 53 minutes 17 seconds
  9. The Cat Empire: 2109 total plays - 6 days 16 hours 1 minutes 24 seconds
  10. Kevin Devine: 2249 total plays - 6 days 12 hours 47 minutes 29 seconds
  11. RX Bandits: 1998 total plays - 5 days 19 hours 1 minutes 52 seconds
  12. Hostage Calm: 2730 total plays - 5 days 13 hours 59 minutes 42 seconds
  13. Yanni: 1708 total plays - 5 days 5 hours 19 minutes 3 seconds

I end up listening to music on CD in my car the most since I drive a lot but I think my most listened to is Modest Mouse with Botch working their way up there. Mogwai are definitely in my top 5 as well.

The only problem with this is how inaccurate my play count readings are. I often cut the song off just before it ends because it ends with silence for several seconds (doesn't add a play until you're 96% through the song or something). I also delete my music and add it back when the files get fucked up, completely removing the plays. I also listen to music on YouTube when I'm self-conscious about how many plays a song has. And (this is a rare case) songs with hidden tracks don't get a play count if you cut it off before the hidden track starts (I'm looking at you, SOAD's "Aerials").

I mean, that is the problem with play counts in general.  I was thinking of taking last.fms file and parsing it to see what it says.  In iTunes though, I remove hidden tracks and when I reupload songs that got corrupted or I accidentally delete, I adjust the playcount so it's pretty accurate.  I care a lot about these stupid stats haha.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I tried it myself, and it gave me a pretty skewed view...Foo Fighters wasn't that high on the list (I think I removed those and put them back recently), but I can promise you that I've heard The Colour and the Shape more than any other album in my lifetime.

this is cool. i'm into it. my total time listening is only 12 days, though, so something with the code times out in that regard. i only have 4K-ish songs.

my play counts are wrong -- my last.fm plays are double what all my itunes plays are, for some reason -- but they're wrong for everything, so the rankings are probably pretty accurate.

My music library has moved and shifted depending on my living locations or laptop/PC at the time. I haven't used iTunes to listen to music for a long time. I remember my last readings on my last.fm account before I shifted all music off my hard drive were Melvins, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Nine Inch Nails. Mogwai was also up there because I used to play Happy Songs... before I went to sleep which meant it played thru the night frequently.

I have never once attempted to keep up with any of this.

MP3.com had no way of keeping up with this, I had a Creative brand MP3 player back in the day (the Nomad which looked like a Sony Discman) that didn't keep up with these stats. This pre-dated iTunes and last.fm and I was using Windows Media Player on my computer then, carrying exorbitant amounts of CDs with me in my vehicle (800ish? Which were all stolen eventually), and spinning records regularly as well. My first iPod was a 3rd generation with FireWire and I feel like this pre-dated last.fm as well? I had to get a new computer that could load the CDrom for iTunes before I could use my iPod.....so I lost all of my previous music and just used the CD copies to re-rip all of it to my new computer. From their I was using my iPod when on campus and running and everything else. I went through 4 hard drive crashes and in one of those iTunes got corrupted or I forgot my password and had to start all over again. Sometime in there I got a first gen iPod touch which I was using a lot.

I used to have enough music and was constantly uploaded more and more to my iTunes that I would just let my iTunes go on random 24/7 in my room regardless of what was going on elsewhere in the house....that would've heavily skewed my results as well.

I've been without a computer for 2ish years now? Been back to iPods (both my 3rd gen and 1st gen touch still work fine....as well as my girlfriends 1st and 2nd gen nanos), CDs (get advance promo copies at my first job), spotify occasionally (girlfriend has an account), and records of course........I have absolutely no way of keeping any kind of tabs on most listened to. I never got on last.fm.....never had a Live Journal, MySpace, Friendster, ect...so I never really felt a need for last.fm either....I did have Facebook for quite a while, but I deactivated it around the same time my computer finally died.

There's so much digital data out there now....wondering how all of it will affect the future of academia as a whole. Previously doin research to write texts books was done at a library where that alone could be extensive and time consuming research, but with the amount of legitimate real-time digital data broadcast these days, I can't fathom attempting to sift through it all, attempt to filter it down, and then somewhat concisely write cohesively about events/people/ect.

I think this is super rad, but I could never possibly come up with even a vaguely accurate count of what I have listened to....digitally alone....and the digital side makes up less than the analog side for me.

I just listened to Happy Songs as I fell asleep last night, weird.

Yep, I'm definitely a The Devil Wears Prada fanboy and I guess I really like Skyrim's soundtrack as well. Wish I could somehow get my info from my Zune days. It would probably be mostly Bullet For My Valentine and the Halo soundtracks though. But a cool program you worked up!

is there a way to do this from your phone? pretty sure my iTunes library plays aren't merely as high as my iPhone music plays

They're one in the same if you periodically plug your phone into your computer. Or if you have iTunes Match.

yeah they should update together whenever you plug it in.  There might be other ways to get the stats to itunes, such as itunes match ( which i know nothing about ).

Hm, fun idea. The last iTunes library that I have was pretty short-lived, I bought this PC in August 2013 and the external HDD with all my music died in January 2015, so that's only a year and a half worth of listens. The upload doesn't seem to work though (it's around 24k songs).

EDIT: here's the error I got: "Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 144965632) (tried to allocate 33554432 bytes)"

Here are my last.fm stats (since 2011 or so)

1 Against Me! 2,422
2 The Naked and Famous 1,438
3 AFI 1,203
4 Bon Iver 1,133
5 Noah and the Whale 1,013
