Phoenix, AZ record stores / coffee spots

Recommended Posts

Cartel Coffee is my favorite, there's a few around the valley, even one at the airport now. Really good! Zia Records is our "superstore" but lots of great stuff. I prefer the one in Tempe since its close to the college and there can be some good second hand finds. The manager there tries to be as fair as possible with pricing too. Across the street is Double Nickels Collective which has about ten different vendors and the employees there are some of the nicest dudes ever. Lots of good punk and metal stuff. There's some others around like Stinkweeds and Record Room but those are more centralized towards downtown and North Phoenix. Downtown Phoenix has a lot of good coffee spots too like Giant and JoBot. Downtown has really grown!

cartel coffee is definitely recommended. its been awhile since ive been to the tempe location but last i was there they had beer as well if youre into that. sip coffee and beer house in scottsdale is nice too (http://sipcoffeeandbeerhouse.com/).

all the zia locations are pretty solid. if you go to one or two of them, youve pretty much seen them all though. rare records are definitely priced accordingly. double nickel collective is great if youre interested in punk / metal / hardcore (sounds like you are). king of the monsters have a booth in there with very affordable prices on a lot of stuff you can usually only find online. couple of the other vendors in there have some pretty inflated prices though. theres also the following:

http://revolveraz.com/ - i prefer the 2nd st. and roosevelt location. looks like their other location moved since i was last there - so it might be improved but it wasnt so great in my opinion.

http://www.stinkweeds.com/ - not much of a hardcore / punk / metal selection that i remember. mostly new stuff with a little bit of used scattered throughout. definitely geared more towards "the hipsters"

https://www.yelp.com/biz/record-room-phoenix

http://bookmans.com/ - i prob wouldnt recommend bookmans over these other places unless you have whole bunch of extra time on your hands. record selection is hit or miss (mosty really old stuff) - but i have found a gem or two there for cheap. theyre mostly a book store. they do have a little cafe / coffee place inside the mesa location though along with a lot of other vintage / used stuff (retro video games, used instruments, toys, laserdiscs, etc.).

there used to be another store in the phoenix area owned by one of the dudes that was/is in landmine marathon (i think) but it may have closed. someone else on here probably knows better than i. im spacing the name right now.

This was Record Revival. They closed unfortunately. I think he moved out of state and tried to have someone take over but it didn't quite work out. Their pricing was hit or miss for me but their hardcore selection was excellent.

Be sure to stop by Stinkweeds for a great non-chain record shop! (best shop in phx)

https://www.facebook.com/Stinkweeds/

Right near Stinkweeds (walking distance) is a small shop called Tracks in Wax
https://www.facebook.com/Tracks-in-Wax-198050380213928/

A short drive from there is a large music chain Zia Records. lots of product.

For coffee/drink near there, be sure to check out the Newton, with the Changing Hands Bookstore with the First Draft 'Book Bar'
http://www.changinghands.com/firstdraftbar

Also, might be worth stopping by The In Groove as well if you're in that area.

https://www.facebook.com/theingroove/

There's a small Revolver Records a short drive from there as well

https://www.facebook.com/RevolverRecordsArcadia/

Check out Stinkweeds and/or The In Groove for a main stop, and those other near-by shops as filler.

The other Revolver moved to like a mile and a half from The In Groove. It's been a lot better since it moved. The stock at the McClintock Revolver was always hit or miss but the two dudes who regularly worked were awesome. One of them works Mondays at Record High now usually.

If you like Dub, punk, post punk and the like I highly recommend The Record Room. I always make my paycheck sad when I leave there. Stinkweeds is good for current stuff.

It changed owners or something recently and the stock isn't quite as great as it was. The guy who owned or coowned or whatever the original store now has a booth in Double Nickel though

I did not know this. I haven't been there in 6 months so its possible of course. Bummer as it was a pretty reliable place to go for what I like.

I'll have to hit Double Nickels then. I typically don't buy much locally which I regret. I'm so laser focused on the curation aspect that I end up ordering everything. I guess I have one less reason to feel bad. I certainly won't miss AZ when I leave.
