jpette
So...anyone want to help me dig deeper? I am looking for some new music and specific band recommendations. I have identified a formula in indie/punk rock that really works for me, and is present in a lot of the bands I really like. Basically, if a band's songs contain 1) a main, powerful, driving guitar line with 2) a secondary, often complex guitar line dancing around it, it is generally a recipe for success with me. This can take several forms: finger picking, slide guitar...sometimes the effect is even achieved by an additional instrument, like the horns in Rocket from the Crypt songs. Anyway, I am now looking for band recommendations that fit this formula, and would love your suggestions. Here are some examples of songs/bands that most closely demonstrate what I am talking about: 1. Archers of Loaf: - Underdogs of Nipomo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZuq-KPN1QQ - Fashion Bleeds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd2xPHOxMCE - Let the Loser Melt (the meat of the song, after it gets going) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdVyCw6jVSY 2. Pretty Girls Make Graves - mainly their second album: - The Teeth Collector https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfFyTNN2g8c - All Medicated Geniuses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al6tEB3onOg - Chemical Chemical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9zUGVWv9ck - Something Bigger, Something Brighter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7FfGUXHSyQ 3. Good Luck - this is more in the pop punk realm, but it fits the description: - Public Radio https://wearegoodluck.bandcamp.com/track/public-radio - Hey Matt https://wearegoodluck.bandcamp.com/track/hey-matt - Come Home https://wearegoodluck.bandcamp.com/track/come-home - Man on Fire https://wearegoodluck.bandcamp.com/track/man-on-fire 4. Rocket from the Crypt - as discussed above, fits less directly into the formula, but the effect is there. - Killy Kill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTzCxD4EMqo - If the Bird Could Fly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiVSUfTkyfM - Shucks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04mIVtJoJpE - Young Livers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s5H8PuOl8Q 5. The Afghan Whigs: - Honky's Ladder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByRNASIBQ2Y - Summer's Kiss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5VG1WHETlQ - Uptown Again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV0L5r8Rw8w - Citi Soleil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIJOFF3aPFI
Sidney Crosley
Not exactly my genre, but I'd like to think one of my all-time favourite albums fits in this category: Dismemberment Plan's Emergency & I. Kind of a great blend of art-punk, noise-rock, and clever indie hooks, sometimes with dual guitars, other times with primitive synth mixed with the guitars. Checkout the songs Gyroscope and The City. mameeshkamowskwoz
jpette
Good call - that one does indeed fit. Weirdly, I was working in an office with the bass player when that album came out.
Tardcore
Try Leatheface - Mush. Particularly songs like 'Not Superstitous'. Not sure I would call the second guitar "complex" but it is certainly dynamic.
jpette
Also a good call. Mush is my favorite of theirs.
brandy
The Fall Of Troy - Doppelganger (insane guitars) Funeral For A Friend - Hours (their debut album is heavier and better imo, but this is more accessible and the twin guitar attack more obvious)
