oakland
Picked up "Moving to Higher Ground" by Wynton Marsalis and it's pretty cool. There's a chapter where he gives short descriptions of jazz musicians he thinks people should know and tells all about them, good and bad. If you're well-versed in jazz much of it is old news, but there's still a lot of great stuff in there. It's about jazz by the way, not really about Marsalis himself. vivsavage
This does look good. Is this a good start for a jazz novice?
oakland
Yeah, I think so. There's no mention of Sonny Rollins, which kind of sucks, or of Clifford Brown, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon ... but he does give it up for some pretty awesome, albeit obvious, dudes. He covers the bases:Coletrane, Miles, Jellyroll, Dizzy, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, etc. These are people everyone should know for one reason or another, so if you want to get into jazz this is a good book.
