Great selection of new alternative/indie as well as punk/hardcore. They also have a really cool used selection that a remarkable amount of modern releases have ended up in.

There's 3 record stores in Orlando worth note... two of which were already mentioned but I'll give my 2 cents:

Park Ave CD's: Great store with cool people. Not a big used vinyl section but you can occasionally find something good. They are more focused on new items, especially of the indie/punk/hardcore/etc variety. They typically have all the new releases and even the harder to get ones. Prices are what I would call 'normal'.

Rock & Roll Heaven: They have the largest Used vinyl collection in Orlando. Not much new. Fun to sort through as they have everything. Punk/indie/classic/folk/hip-hop/country... just everything. Not to mention hundreds upon hundreds of non-sorted 7 inches in the back. There are some good finds to be had here, but only one problem... in my opinion they are way over priced. If you are willing to shell out the cash for something thats harder to find then you'll be ok, but if a bargain is what you are after this isn't the spot.

Retro Records (59 North Bumby Avenue, Orlando, FL 32803) : This is where you go to find a bargain on used stuff. Great prices and a good selection. The only thing with these guys is you won't find any current music though. Their main focus is on classic rock titles. The majority of their inventory pre-dates the 90s. If you're looking for some Zep, Beatles, Clash, etc at a good price then this is where to go. Also a decent selection of Jazz and singles. I like going here, but again just know there is nothing current here.

All the spots have their pros & cons but I'll let you decide for yourself what you are looking for. If you're in Orlando drop me a line!

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA

Hands down, my favourite city to record shop in:

CHEAP THRILLS - Awesome used section and good new section. Their stock rotates fairly quickly so it is always worth a trip once a week or so. (I've nabbed some incredibly rare records here for cheapo like the Floor/Sloth 7" for $5 and an Acid King test press for $15).

PHONOPOLIS - A smaller store with a fairly good used and new selection, but heavy on the indie rock. Gets the occasional gem in, so another store worth the weekly trip.

SOUND CENTRAL - Mostly punk/HC/metal, but run by two of the sweetest dudes. They have some rarities and they know what they are worth, but are decent nonetheless.

PAUL'S BOUTIQUE - A hilarious used record store that never seems to be open during logical business hours. Paul's stock doesn't move and, after being flipped through endlessly, the sleeves are pretty worn. For example, a record priced at $20 when first put into stock might have been fair 2 years ago but not when it's been beat to hell since. Nevertheless. I've pulled some good '90s alternative LPs from there.

33 AUX TOURS - A decent new and used store but lacking that distinct Montreal charm. Very knowledge staff with a large inventory.

L'OBLIQUE - Snooty indie store, but certainly worth the trip. Carries lots of Godspeed You Black Emperor et al.

SONIKS - Great garage rock selection with lots of punk to boot.

PRIMITIVE - Again, great used selection but mostly beat up and overpriced.

BEATNICKS - Lots of obscure rarities and new releases.

X20 - Where else in Montreal can you buy some bondage pants, Doc Martens and old punk/oi records?

LES PICK UP - Interesting used stuff, but mostly oldies with a few gems if you are willing to dig.

ENCORE BOOKS AND RECORDS - Only been here once but it seemed to have a really interesting selection of rarities. Mostly 70s stuff with some new stuff thrown in.

NICE MUSIC - Huge selection of crap. Seriously. But the owner runs a tight ship with regular emails of incoming stock and, to his credit, does gets the odd gem in now and then (who the fuck bought Converge - Jane Doe for $5? That's what I want to know!).

SASKATOON, SK, CANADA

VINYL EXCHANGE - A Perennial favourite of mine since I first discovered it in grade 6, 1990, The Vinyl Exchange has had plenty of ups and downs since. Depending on who was working there at the time, the selection of punk, indie and metal was either second to none or completely laughable - usually corresponding with their selection of bongs. As of late, they've been getting in the standard new releases - ho-hum.

VINYL DINER - A good indie store that tends to pull in most of what little awesome used stuff there is in a fairly small city. I've nabbed some real treasures here but maybe 2-3 a year, and that's being generous. Still, the owner has a good heart and has worked hard to make a very welcoming and comfortable store in the Prairies.

CALIFORNIA

Amoeba

2455 Telegraph Ave. - Berkeley, Ca 94704

Phone: (510) 549-1125

1855 Haight Street - San Francisco, Ca

Phone: (415) 831-1200

6400 Sunset Blvd. - Hollywood, Ca

Phone: (323) 245-6400 - This is the only Amoeba I've ever been to. Almost every time I go I find some great deals. The place is huge so you'll need to give yourself plenty of time. Lots of fairly priced vinyl to look through and pricey rarer items on the wall. EVERY kind of music.

Rockaway Records

2395 Glendale Blvd. - Los Angeles, Ca. 90039

Phone: (323) 664-3232 - This place specializes in rare classic rock. Tons of really rare Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. They keep their boxes of 7" behind the counter and you have to ask someone to get the box down that you want(punk, oldies, etc.) I didn't know this the first couple times I was there, so just a heads up.

Soundsations http://www.yelp.com/biz/soundsations-los-angeles

8701 La Tijera Boulevard

Los Angeles, CA 90045 - Near LAX, I've found some good stuff here, but not too much (a couple of color Fat). 7" selection is pretty small, LP selection is better, but not much.

Freakbeat

http://freakbeatrecords.com/

13616 Ventura Blvd.

Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

phone (818) 995-7603. - LP selection is pretty good, found some rare stuff for fair prices. Smaller place, but it's packed with stuff. Parking is meters only so bring change. One of the ONLY record stores I've ever been in that has a bathroom for customers.

Headline Records

7706 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA‎ - (323) 655-2125‎

Tiny place in a cool part of Hollywood. There use to be a lot of stores right here, Taang!, Vinyl Fetish. This is the only one left. Specializes in punk. LOTS of rare punk in here.

Poo Bah

2636 East Colorado Boulevard

Pasadena, CA 91107-3726

This place sucks...don't waste your time. A lot of junk. I keep trying it and I never find anything.

Canterbury

805 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA‎ - (626) 792-7184‎

Waste of time...mostly CDs

Penny Lane

1661 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA‎ - (626)

535-0949‎

Pretty decent. Only prob is that they are one of those places that puts the sticker right on the cover....bullshit! I have found some good stuff here....good mix of genres. One of the only places that advertises buying CDs and DVDs from them, copying them, and bringing them back for like 80% return. This is kind of odd except that I saw a lot of cool boot live DVDs...Dwarves, Misfits, etc.

Kaos

332 North Citrus Avenue, Covina, CA‎ - (626) 967-7802‎

Small place, small selection. Mostly punk and alternative though. Guy's a crazy Morrisey fan and treats his store like a Smiths museum.

Rhino

235 North Yale Avenue, Claremont, CA‎ - (909) 626-7774‎

Again, they put the sticker right on the cover, come on people!!

Pretty solid amount of vinyl. They really overprice a "rare" item when they have it though. They sell refurbished turntables and all sorts of stuff, toys, books, etc.

Vinyl Solution

18822 Beach Boulevard, Huntington Beach, CA‎ - (714) 963-1819‎

Historic record store...even though it's tiny, they have had tons of bands play here. Specialize in old school punk rock. They can be pricey though...be prepared to spend.

Place is so good. If you ever come to town, definitely come check it out.

I could not agree more. There are a few more decent stores in the Twin Cities that I'll try to list later, but this one is great.

I think they describe it as a cooperative, no manager, no boss, no owner, nobody gets paid. It's run by people in the punk community, and all the money goes back into the store. Or something close to that. It is a punk rock vinyl record store in every sense. Was in there last week and saw Paddy from D4 buying a bunch of records...awesome.

Also for Virginia Plan 9 Music is pretty good. They have a couple of locations here Williamsburg, Richmond, Charlottesville, and one in NC I believe. I've been to all of them except the NC location. But the best store that they have is the Richmond location...it has the largest selection of vinyl in my opinion. They also do in stores like Park Ave. They have good pricing and a lot of used recoords. But sometimes I find that it's hit or miss.

In orlando Florida, there is Park Avenue (ParkAvecds.com) which has brand new vinyl - everything from the pricey Beck reissues to Bloc Party. They got back into vinyl a few years ago, so not much used yet. The only store that has the Ween reissues in stock. They have a small section of new 7inchers - indie. Retro Records in Orlando is great only if you like old music - the only new vinyl they have is Beatles / Dylan or classic rock reissues, IE - he had the McCartney Amoeba bootleg that I had never seen in a store. This store has tons of classic rock / metal and new wave UK 12inch singles and picture discs from the 80's. If you like 80's or before - this is your store. His used stuff is in excellent shape - he has good prices on a lot of old stuff that goes for a ton on Ebay. There is another in Orlando, which i haven't checked yet - rock-n-rollheaven.com. In Jacksonville Florida, all the good record stores are gone, hopefully the one remaining (WeirdWax) gets better, as he has very basic stuff for people that are just beginning a collection, and only about 10 new indie titles.

1524 East 7th Avenue

Vinyl Fever (not the best selection ever, but some good deals on occasion)

4110 Henderson Boulevard, Tampa, FL

Daddy Kool (a little bit of markup compared to online prices, but great dudes working here. good selection)

538 Central Avenue, St Petersburg, FL

Disc Exchange (very disorganized, but there are finds to be had)

6712 Central Avenue, St Petersburg, FL

Asylum (haven't been here, but i think they mostly only have old stuff)

New York, NY

I'd be happy to do more scouting if people want more details. I'm still new-ish to the vinyl thing, so it's possible there are things I'm missing, or that my descriptions aren't that great for your specific needs. Here are my impressions for what it's worth:

Other Music - lots of Indie Rock stuff, fairly small used section, good CD selection too

http://www.othermusic.com/

Bleecker Street Records - In my opinion, the best record store in NYC. They've got a huge selection of both new & used vinyl, and if you were to go to one store, this is a great one-stop-shop. From what I can remember, not a ton of niche product, but great store nonetheless

http://www.bleeckerstreetrecords.com/store/bleecker.html

Bleecker Bob's - huge selection of vintage and used vinyl, probably your best bet for used stuff

http://www.myspace.com/bleeckerbobs

J&R - part of the 1-block-long J&R Electronics behemoth, but it's a great place for new "mainstream" vinyl

http://www.generationrecords.com/

Generation Records - great selection of punk & metal stuff. I've only been in there a few times, but it's a cool store
