The Archipelago Rises Newsletter for August 2011

Hey there folks

Thanks for checking out the August ’11 edition of The Archipelago Rises newsletter! Your support is hugely appreciated!

In Mylene Sheath news, the absolutely PHENOMENAL new album from Beware of Safety entitled ‘Leaves/Scars’ is available for preorder. CD, LP, digital. However you want it, the Sheath have got it.

There’s been some issues with the pressing of the Actors & Actresses album ‘We Love Our Enemy’. Hopefully, these issues will become a thing of the past soon. We’ll let you know asap when conditions improve in A&A land.

The most limited Beneath Oblivion / Angel Eyes split 7” is sold out, but you can still get it on 2 different colours. There’s only the gold Giants 7” left too. These lil’ vinyl have shot out the door. Don’t resign yourself to the scrap heap and sleep on these. Get on it now or regret forever.

Sheath preorders

FEDORA CORPSE

We have placed our order with the glorious duo over at Fedora Corpse. On their way to us is every in-print Fedora vinyl release, including the latest Rat Catching and Comoros LPs. All FC releases are extremely limited with only 100 of each pressed. Expect mind-melting sonic experimentation.

TENZENMEN

The Archipelago Rises is equally proud, humble and excited to now be stocking Tenzenmen releases. Tenzenmen is a label specializing in Australasian DIY awesomeness. Running the gamut of every possible musical genre, they release spectacular albums from bands spread across Australia, New Zealand, China and South East Asia. Check out their website and get supporting one of the hardest working underground music dudes this side of the Pacific. You can buy some of their releases in The Archipelago.

BRIDGETOWN RECORDS

That affable gentleman, Kevin Greenspon who runs Bridgetown Records has sent a bunch of cool releases our way too. Some beautiful tapes, CDs and a first for Bridgetown, a music DVD for our consumption. Indie DIY pop rock kinda gear. Really great stuff, ultra limited and awesome ‘series’ packaging!

On a particular crap note regarding Kevin and Bridgetown, whilst on their current tour, their car was broken into and was emptied of all things valuable. They lost some essential gear including a laptop, ipod, chargers as well as some very personal belongings. Whilst the actual tour is going AWESOME, this event just adds that much more pressure to what is already an intense time. The Archipelago will be sending some $$$ Kevin’s way to help out. If any of ya’ll can help out too, paypal to [email protected] I’m sure he’ll help you out with some gnarly Bridgetown stuff as thanks.

AT WAR WITH FALSE NOISE

The At War With False Noise order is on its way! EXCELLENTYEAH! Alastair has made great inroads Glasgow-way, and has succeeded in the awesome task of moving his life from under one roof to another. FINALLY, those INCREDIBLE head-fuck jams are on their way downunder! We’re expecting releases from Locrian, Gruel, Haare, Vom, Marzuraan to name a few.

BOOKMAKER RECORDS

The Archipelago Rises is getting some Bookmaker Records gear for the distro. They are a very new label, out of France, and have three artists signed to the roster so far – Henryspenncer, Among the Bones and Seabuckthorn. Think psychedelia rock – Earth, Pink Floyd, Souvenir’s Young America – and you get the picture.

OMEGA MASSIF ‘Geisterstadt’ cassette

Omega Massif’s post-metal-opus ‘Geisterstadt’ has arrived. On our other favourite analog format, there were only 49 of these cassettes printed and they are now sold out at source. Get in quick, coz these will fly.

We still have some other really choice Maniyax releases in stock. The excellent, crushing Battlefields release Thresholds of Imbalance double LP is still available and I would recommend this to all ‘post-metal’ lovers out there.

EXPO 70 ‘Night Mist’ cassette

The Expo 70 ‘Night Mist’ cassettes from Nurse Etiquette are now in the shop. These are going quickly so if you know yr Expo 70, you know what to do.

Competition Time!

We have a tour press copy of Herra Terra's latest rekkid, ‘Quiet Geist’ to give away. Purchase any Mylene Sheath release from The Archipelago Rises and you’ll automatically go in the draw. Draw closes 31st August so you have plenty of time to get your orders in. Please note, you need to purchase a Mylene Sheath item to go into the draw. So if you’ve got some distro items in your cart, be sure to chuck a Sheath release in there too! ;) Unlimited entries apply.

AUSSIE underground bands and labels

We are woefully short of Aussie content in the store. No, we don’t want yr Whitlams CDs or your Delta Goodrem numbers. We want yr underground music that’s not getting much in the way of airplay (or is unlikely to get any in the first place) on our ‘alternative’ nonsense stations like Triple J and the like.

If you have a CD, LP or cassette out and you play/distribute metal, post-rock, noise, ambient, drone and/or rock we want to hear from you with a view to stocking yr release. We don’t have huge resources (by any means) but whatever we can do to get yr name out there can only be good.

Use the contact form HERE or email direct to [email protected] with your details.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING RATES FOR VINYL…..

International shipping rates for vinyl has been added to the Big Cartel site. As a general rule, shipping large vinyl international from Australia is very expensive. Please use the following options based on your shipping destination:

Residents of Canada or Middle Eastern countries, please use CANADA in the ‘Shipping to’ field.

Residents of USA, please use USA in the ‘Shipping to’ field. The shipping cost includes the extra $9 ‘security’ charge that Australia Post has placed on all parcels shipped to the USA that weigh over 500grams. If the parcel weighs UNDER 500grams, the cost will be substantially reduced and I can invoice you the correct rate, or as is Archipelago policy, I can refund you the difference after payment is received.

Residents of Asia and Pacific nations, please use JAPAN in the ‘Shipping to’ field.

Residents anywhere else in the world, please use EVERYWHERE ELSE in the ‘Shipping to’ field.

All international postage charges can be checked here: http://auspost.com.au/index.html

I encourage you all to check the Australia Post website so you can see for yourself and know that we’re not ripping anybody off with exorbitant, over-the-top shipping charges.

Remember, if you happen to pay more during checkout than what the actual postage is, the difference will be refunded back to you. You will only ever pay the actual postage rate when you shop at The Archipelago Rises.

------------------

As with all Archipelago distro items, numbers are extremely limited so I am happy to offer a reserve/hold option for interested parties. Email to [email protected] with your request and I’ll put it aside for you.

We are still taking suggestions for distro stocking. If you have any particular requests, ideas etc for what we should be selling, lemme know! [email protected].

THANKS FOR READING FOLKS! KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE NEXT INSTALLMENT!!!

September 2011

Hey there folks

Thanks for checking out the September ’11 edition of The Archipelago Rises newsletter! Your support is hugely appreciated!

In Mylene Sheath news, the new Beneath Oblivion opus ‘From Man to Dust’ is now up for pre-order. You can preview a couple of tracks here: Barren Earth and Empire. As you will know doubt realise after listening to these behemoths, your attainment of this new record will become a do-or-die mission. The Archipelago Rises will be getting some of these in, as well as their split 7” with Angel Eyes. The Archipelago Rises will be putting some Beneath Oblivion packs up in the store. More on that soon…

From pics I’ve seen, it looks like the long-delayed Actors & Actresses release ‘We Love Our Enemy’ is finally out! Those of you that have pr-ordered direct through the Sheath should be getting yours soon, otherwise we’ll be getting some in too.

Giants 7”s on their way too.

The most recent Beware of Safety release ‘Leaves/Scars’ LP has been selling like hotcakes, but we should be having our copies soon, along with the 7” split they did with Giants.

Eksi Ekso ‘ Brown Shark Red Lion’ should be here soon too. A bit of a departure from ‘I Am Your Bastard Wings’, ‘Brown Shark…’ explores the poppier side of Eksi Ekso. A surprising listen for sure, but once you let it through the door, it seeps its way into your soul. LPs and full-on expansive CDs available soon.

TENZENMEN: We’ve got some Tenzenmen restocks in so plenty of copies for you folks to buy! There are also some exciting new releases coming, including the Demerit / SS20 split 10”. Expect punk angst. It’s up in the shop at only $10 a pop. More Tenzenmengems coming very soon!

The latest Nikko release ‘The Warm Side’ has also been added to The Archipelago’s stocks. Beautiful, melancholic Aussie rock in the vein of Nick Cave, The Dirty Three and the like.

HOBBLEDEHOY RECORDS: The Archipelago Rises and Hobbledehoy Records have started what we both hope to be a long and fruitful relationship in this cut-throat music world. Based out of Adelaide, South Australia, Hobbledehoy has a relatively small, but wonderfully talented and gifted roster of Aussle and US acts for your aural consumption. Brisbane post-rock band Arrows, US indie rock act The City on Film and the Australian CD & double LP presses of the latest This Will Destroy You release ‘Tunnel Blanket’ all have a home at Hobbledehoy.

The Archipelago Rises is very proud to be associated with Hobble. We have CD and LP copies of a bunch of their releases so get your copies in the SHOP now!

BIRD’S ROBE COLLECTIVE: We have begun a little partnership with Bird’s Robe Collective. Another brilliant Aussie label, filled with very talented individuals and bands, they are home to a bunch of very cool outfits including sleepmakeswaves. The name would suggest it, and they definitely are making waves here and overseas with their brand of uplifting post-rock. We’ve got a hefty amount of their latest album ‘…and so we destroyed everything’ as well as a few copies of other Bird releases. These are selling VERY well people, so if you’re into your Explosions in the Sky, Mono and the like, sleepmakeswaves could well be right up your alley. Don’t miss out on the next big thing!

AT WAR WITH FALSE NOISE: The At War With False Noise order is in! Locrian’s doom-drone masterpiece ‘Drenched Lands’ CD is in, Cheer’s beautiful ‘ Singing Sand’ cassette is in, the heavy-as-all-fuck self titled CD release from Gruel as well as Vom’s ‘Primitive Arts’ CD is in too. Not too mention some other incredible releases, so head on over to the store to find out all we have and you’ll be on yr way to some perverse listening pleasure!

BOOKMAKER RECORDS: Bookmaker Records stuff is in. They are a very new label, out of France, and have three artists signed to the roster so far – Henryspenncer, Among the Bones and Seabuckthorn. Think psychedelic rock – Earth, Pink Floyd, Souvenir’s Young America – and you get the picture. Have a look, take a punt coz this stuff is fantastic.

FEDORA CORPSE: Here, now is every in-print Fedora vinyl release, including the latest Rat Catching and Comoros LPs. All FC releases are extremely limited with only 100 of each pressed. We even have a solitary copy of the Comoros ‘Yul Trilogy’ 3CDr release. These are scarce and if you like your drone, essentially essential. Expect mind-melting sonic experimentation.

WITCH SERMON: You drone heads out there – YOU’RE SLEEPING ON SOME INCREDIBLE RL:ZZ RELEASES. Two cassettes have been released so far ‘Esotericists’ and ‘Fertility and War’. Both of these have been presented with beautiful art in gorgeously ‘dark’ packaging. The music within hints on doom, drone, ambient and occult-themed noise. Only a few of these have been pressed. We have both copies as well as a double pack containing both releases at a cheaper price.

2nd Hand Stuff: Selection getting ever larger. Check: 2nd Hand in the Big Cartel, 2nd Hand in ebay, Mylene Sheath and 2nd Hand on Discogs

PSYCHIC ASSAULT: We have received some LP copies of the gut-wrenching, soul-enrapturing Ensorcelor release ‘Crucifuge’. Two sidelong tracks of blackened doom/sludge, this record will crush you under its anvil weight until you are nothing but sub-atomic particles, only for it to lighten slightly as the final catharsis takes hold. A truly masterful metal release.

From Psychic Assault, we’ve also got some copies of the self-titled Murmuure vinyl released by Aurora Borealis. The CD version is pretty much sold out everywhere so get your vinyl here and listen to it in the format it deserves.

AUSSIE & KIWI underground bands and labels: We are starting to build a half-decent collection of quality, underground Aussie releases in the store, but we need more! If you have a CD, LP or cassette out and you play/distribute metal, post-rock, noise, ambient, drone and/or rock we want to hear from you with a view to stocking yr release. We don’t have huge resources (by any means) but whatever we can do to get yr name out there can only be good.

THE ARCHIPELAGO RISES

February 2012 newsletter

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2012 from The Archipelago Rises!

We’ve got a few new arrivals in the store for your aural enjoyment. Some really exciting stuff too! ☺

EXPO ‘70 / ALTAIR TEMPLE

‘S/T’ 12”

(Radar Swarm)

First up, we’ve got the split LP release between Expo ’70 and Altair Temple, released by Radar Swarm. Expo ’70 contributes a sidelong excursion into the drone mind with the track ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’. This is one of Expo ‘70s more divergent recordings as it moves from vision to vision across its 20-minute length. The track originally appeared on the ‘Paralyzed’ cassette, which came with initial pre-orders of the ‘Death Voyage’ release. It features some lightly manipulated percussive work on top of Justin’s psyche guitar. At 5 minutes in, the subtlety is suddenly drowned under waves of heaving bass drones. The drones cascade across your aural plain like huge crashing craft from the outer reaches – only to be supplanted by some more of Jw’s more intense, hypnotic guitar work. And we’re only half way through the track.

Saying that Expo ’70 takes you on a journey is understatement personified. Perfectly suited to the vinyl format and to headphone listening, the track gains advantage from the vinyl medium as the world-within-the-world undercurrents are exposed to the listener without the listener having to dredge through the hum of the original cassette release. Or; maybe, I need a better cassette deck. Or; maybe I need to embrace the hum….

Altair Temple continues the precedent set by Expo ’70 on the previous side by contributing 3 more tracks of wondrous drones. Deep resonance abounds. Large, heavy speakers essential. Or ruddy good headphones. I have a pair of Bose headphones and they just handled the listen. Did I have it up too loud? Well, really, that’s the only way to listen to drone.

“Exconjuration…” builds an increasingly menacing wall of sound across its length. Imagine yourself moving slowly towards the event horizon (of the Laurence Fishburne type) with the trepidation slowly building in your mind. The radiation increases, the noise thickens and you’ve found yourself pulverized under the weight of the ‘Mountain Drone’. Claustrophobic wall of low frequency. As ‘Ars Theurgia’ begins, the cathartic release is profound as you find yourself drifting effortlessly through the clouds. The sound of waves crashing against a distant beach echo through the cloud chamber as you drift towards the sun. It’s all over, in that most inexplicably intense and euphoric way.

Limited to only 300 copies, all on white vinyl, don’t expect these to hang around very long.

Essential movies for the mind.

thearchipelagorises.bigcartel.com/product/expo-70-altair-temple-split-vinyl-lp

HIGHGATE

‘S/T’ LP

(Psychic Assault)

Second new release is the latest slab of monolithic heaviness from Psychic Assault. Back in 2007, an undiscovered band by the name of Highgate released an hour-long track that would forever change the landscape of heavy music…if you ever heard it. Going largely unnoticed by the masses, the select few that were lucky enough (or astute enough) to find this track were onto something rare and special. And completely crippling. Total annihilation. Intense.

So, fast-forward to 2012 and Psychic Assault, along with Vendetta, have released this doom masterpiece on vinyl. 300 copies, all hand numbered. The perfect medium for total destruction.

‘You know what to do’

thearchipelagorises.bigcartel.com/product/highgate-s-t-lp

MICHAEL SCOTT TAPSCOTT

‘GOOD MORNING, AFRICA’ LP

(Bookmaker Records)

Coming very soon is the brand new release from Bookmaker Records. Rapidly becoming a favourite label for The Archipelago Rises, Bookmaker is now venturing into the vinyl ether with their very first LP release. Michael Tapscott, better known for being the main man in Odawas, has continued his exploration into his ambient, dark folk, cosmic leanings with ‘Good Morning, Africa’, a stunning document demonstrating his gift for the sublime.

The album deftly flits between manipulated field recordings, indie folk tunes and ambient drones. Bringing to mind the more laid-back Flaming Lips indie rock, Six Organs of Admittance acoustic meanderings and label-mates Henryspenncer’s dark-ambience, ‘Good Morning, Africa’ is a tonally blissful encounter. Those of you who have purchased or listened to any of Gustav Franklin’s material recently will also find elements within this album to savor.

The Archipelago Rises is very proud to be helping distribute this record in Australia for Bookmaker Records. Limited to 300 copies, this album will take you on a trip – one that you may never return from.

As an added bonus for this very special release, The Archipelago Rises will be offering a very limited pack including ALL of the Bookmaker Records releases thus far released. For a heavily discounted price, naturally. Included are said vinyl LP, Seabuckthorn’s ‘In Nightfall’ CD, Henryspenncer’s ‘To The Timeless Valley’ CD and the Henryspenncer / Among the Bones split CD.

Links will follow, as soon as ‘Good Morning, Africa’ arrives. Get in touch if you want me to hold an LP or the pack for you.

SOME SLIGHTLY LESS RECENT ARRIVALS WORTH MENTIONING/REMEMBERING. …AGAIN

ZZ: Pig Cycle II & III (Self Released) - Unsettling, dark sounds from Andy of ZZ (Persistence of Mourning, Winters in Osaka, Witch Sermon). File under dark ambient/drone. thearchipelagorises.bigcartel.com/artist/zz

Whilst yr checking out the drone ZZ material, definitely check out the Stanridge collaboration for something completely different.

THE HOUSE OF CAPRICORN: Sign of the Cloven Hood & In The Devil’s Days (Swamps of One Tree Hill) - Quite obvious overtures here with these two CDs. The titles say it all. But I’m tellin’ ya, these are hell good (pardon the pun) to listen to! ‘Sign’ is more of a classic stoner/doom record. Sabbath-y, Kyuss-y. ‘Devil’s’ has a more expansive sound that brings to mind Type O Negative and Life of Agony. thearchipelagorises.bigcartel.com/artist/the-house-of-capricorn

fragment.: Home (OPN Records) - Beautiful, expansive shoegaze drones in the vein of Jesu, taken to the outer limits. Only $10 a pop. thearchipelagorises.bigcartel.com/product/fragment-home-cd

PIG HEART TRANSPLANT / THE ENDLESS BLOCKADE: Split (Superfi Records) - 6-panel 7” split between these two mental, mental bands. Powerviolence vs noise vs powerviolence. Superfi Records have planted another evil seed to punish, corrupt and reduce the soul. Awesome.

thearchipelagorises.bigcartel.com/product/pig-heart-transplant-the-endless-blockade-split-7

FUTURE DEALINGS

The Archipelago Rises will be getting the last of Gustav Franklin’s available releases. Once these are gone, they be gone forever. We’ll be getting the Pages CDr full length, Found Tapes Vol II CDr and the Landstormen cassette so if you want one of these unheralded ambient/drone masterpieces (if I do say so myself), I’ll happily reserve a copy for you until their arrival.

We are finalizing an order with Antithetic Records. Some avant black metal making its way here, including the latest Book of Sand release ‘The Face of the Waters’, Terzij de Horde’s ‘A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of the Light’ 12" and the new release from those South African new powerhouses, Wildernessking ‘The Writing of Gods in the Sand’.

We’ve got a huge box of goodies waiting for The Archipelago Rises at Witch Sermon HQ. All it needs is for me to finalise the deal and Witch’ll be sending this box of mega-darkness to our shores.

The discogs site is just about complete. Added a lot of releases to the database so most of everything The Archipelago Rises stocks, is on the discogs site.

MYLENE SHEATH

We’ve got a couple of Mylene Sheath releases in stock that are now unavailable at Sheath HQ. We have only very limited quantities ourselves.

The Archipelago Rises DownLoad Series.

Contributing artists and/or labels will provide a track that will be exclusive to The Archipelago Rises DownLoad Series (TARDLS). This track will not be released anywhere else. The tracks’ purpose is two-fold; it’s a thanks for all those that purchase something from The Archipelago Rises, supporting The Rises, the band and the label for the release they’ve purchased; and it provides an additional promotional tool for artists and/or labels that contribute to the series.

The track is completely free. At this stage, it will be limited to thirty ‘pieces’ and be provided on a nice, laminated, collectible card, which will be individually numbered. Everyone that buys something from The Archipelago Rises will get one of these cards until the thirty ‘pieces’ have been given out. Once the thirty ‘pieces’ are gone, the next installment of the series will be released. These ‘pieces’ will have a one-time-only-use download code listed on them, which gets you the track.

Befitting of the collectible nature of the series, I will be hand-making some wooden boxes to store the cards in. These will be made to order and, barring inconceivable high demand, will be limited to ten. More details will follow about the boxes shortly.

The first artist to be forever immortalized in this series is ‘zz’. zz has compiled a dark ambient/drone piece, which has been cut, spliced, re-jigged, re-sorted from its parent music previously released on ‘Pig II’ . Whilst one can stream the track on zz’s bandcamp (harshdrone.bandcamp.com), the only place to own the track is through TARDLS.

Everyone who buys anything from The Archipelago Rises gets one of these cards. They are limited to one card, per series, per buyer.
