akross Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I am looking for a way to make sure my tonearm is properly balanced without buying any fancy/expensive devices. I was told by someone that if it balances a penny that the force is good, but all that did was remind me that I am supposed to to put a coin on my tonearm to fully enjoy my Texas Is The Reason record. tankerdesk Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I'm guessing your turntable has a counterweight, you should be able to look up your turntable/cartridge and figure out the correct weight. gabe005 Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 You should balance out your tonearm (make sure cartridge & needle are attached) so that it is parallel to the platter and just sort of "floats" right there. Neither going up nor going down to hit the platter. Once that balance is achieved then adjust the tracking force mechanism based on the recommendations from manufacturer. But that was when I was in high school and more or less stupid. With the price of some vinyl these days, pennies go nowhere near my tonearm or vinyl.
