mcm1610 Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 For my entire existence buying records, I've skimped on the player itself, figuring being able to listen to them in some capacity is good enough (though the whole time knowing this was dumb). But anyway. I fell into a Kenwood KR-A5040 receiver and some Technics floor speakers, some pretty big ones. I wired them into the receiver, plugged in my shitty Ion TT (it's not their basic one, but it's still absolutely awful), and...! The speakers sound like they're either completely bogged down by something, or like they have so much power running into them they're about to explode. The volume fluxuates some and it's very gritty sounding. My first guess is that somewhere a grounding wire needs to be put in place, but honestly I have no fuckin idea. Before I was going shitty TT into pretty good computer speakers. Notes: -I obviously need a better TT and I'm hoping my birthday at the end of next month will take care of that. -I've never tested the speakers with anything besides the record player, so... ajxd Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Check to see if surrounding foam of the driver is rotten. Or check to see if your preamp switch is on. Or if you have a phono channel in the receiver plug the cables into that. Don't rule out your terrible TT, the speakers could be crap too! Test another source. Trying it with my computer right now, it's clear, but the sound is still fluxuating. I think grounding the record player would help, but there's still an issue with the fluxuation in the volume. Someone suggest a good album to test it with. I keep picking stuff that I'm pretty sure was recorded shodily or is just sloppy or incosistent itself or something. hankmurphy Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Sometimes the preamp causes problems with the receiver. If you're using the phono inputs, try switching to a different one. For instance; my TT sounds like it's going to explode when it's hooked into the phono input, but sounds fine using the TV, Tape, or CD inputs. mcm1610 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm going to test it a whole lot more tomorrow, but it might have been as simple a fix as plugging it into CD instead of phono. +1, or whatever it is on this one. To both of you, actually! I don't know how to turn off the preamp on the TT so I'll leave it in another input until I buy a real record player.
