Long Live Freedom!

The political US punk band ANTI-FLAG congratulates AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL to their 50th anniversary with a new version of the song “Toast To Freedom”.

It is the 31st of July 2012 when an idea becomes a sure-fire success. ANTI-FLAG, which was founded 20 years ago in a left-wing political underground environment in Pittsburgh / Pennsylvania by the lead singer Justin Sane and the bass player Christ #2, is playing a benefit concert for the at that time imprisoned band members of PUSSY RIOT - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyok Hina and Yekatherina Samutsevich. 200 Die-Hard-Fans are watching the show including Jochen Wilms, a long-term friend and companion of Bill Shipsey, the founder of ART FOR AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL.

Wilms, ANTI-FLAG, the band RADIO HAVANNA, which is contributing to the benefit concert as well, and their label UNCLE M agree on expressing their anger and incomprehension concerning the imprisonment of PUSSY RIOT beyond that benefit concert and in the future. They are planning to record their version of “Toast To Freedom”, as has been done already by popular artists as Marianne Faithful, Kris Kristofferson, Larry Campbell, Gentleman or the actor Ewan McGregor. Because of their united wish to be opposed to worldwide poverty, exploitation and injustice, with “Toast To Freedom” they not only show their discontent over the influence of lobbyists, the economy, big business concerns or religion on politics, legislations and governments, but also “…with this song to comfort over losses and help to overcome pain.” as was said by Carl Carlton, a co-author and co-producer.

Not even three month later the roughly drafted master plan comes to action when in Berlin, at the history-charged Hansa-Studio, ANTI-FLAG meets with the producer Jochen Wilms to record their version of “Toast To Freedom” – assisted also by many friends and companions as Ian D’Sa, the guitarist of BILLY TALENT, Bernd Kurtzke from the Berlin band BEATSTEAKS and the band DONOTS from Münster. Together they record a loud and powerful manifestation of intent. A song which will for sure rock the boat, wake up sleeping dogs and cross all borders and genres.

"We hope that we can get the message of ‘Toast To Freedom” to people whose ears have been closed until now,” said Anti-Flag in a statement.  “Our goal with this song is to show our solidarity and support and to express our admiration for Pussy Riot, Amnesty International and all who stand up to injustice and oppression. In the same way Pussy Riot has inspired us to never be silent when we witness oppression we hope this song will do the same for you. This song is indeed, our toast to freedom.”

"ANTI-FLAG are the punk successors to legendary folk singers Woodie Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Their influence and impact is reminiscent of The Plastic People of the Universe in Communist Czechoslovakia. We are proud that they continue to support the work of ANESTY and are grateful for their art and commitment." (ART FOR AMNESTY Founder Bill Shipsey)

“It was an exciting time to work with ANTI-FLAG in the Hansa Studio in Berlin. What a great band. We were just trying to find our way in a one day session without having any preconceived idea of what it was supposed to be. We took the same old microphones that David Bowie and Brian Eno used for his legendary Berlin Heroes recordings in 1977. Music production is a constant game of learning. Sometimes it’s technical things and sometimes it’s inspirational things. Much of the job is about creating a perfect environment: A legendary studio with vintage gear, a great song and passionate and great musicians. It was a perfect day with ANTI-FLAG.” (Producer Jochen Wilms
