Black Friday Record Store Day--November 2013

Recommended Posts

If you're spending 24 hours a day 7 days a week listening to music, my post about being socially awkward still stands.

Like a 30 year old collecting posters and pieces of plastic with Phish music on them isn't dorky. We are all lame. Get off your high horse.

I'm "socially awkward", do not want to talk to a single person in the RSD line and proud of it.

Honestly, all my point really is, is that the complaints about RSD are literally like a broken record every single year. If you can't find something worthwhile about the event, shut up, be quiet and don't attend. Nobody cares that the only 2 bands you listen to, don't have an RSD release. Nobody cares that you instinctively dislike people and hate waiting in line with strangers so you would rather just be an oddball and sit in line by yourself with your headphones on. Release too expensive? Find something else to buy. Tired of seeing a bunch of re-issues? Is it impossible to understand that some folks may not have an original and don't think paying hundreds of dollars for it is reasonable?

Reality is that RSD is a day when hundreds of records are all released at once. Especially on this board, how is this possibly something that is viewed negatively?

Im hoping to see the cure's wish get repressed.

Don't hold your breath on this.  Robert Smith has been promising a deluxe remaster of this for years. What I would like to see is a Box Set for Join The Dots (B Sides and rarities).  The cd compilation is a 4 cd set, so if they did it right, it would be around 10 - 12 records on 180 gram vinyl and treasure chest of good music.

I think what is interesting about The Cure is that they are one of the most consistent contributors to Record Store and one of the highest selling / pressing as well.....case in point!

2013 - Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me on Red Vinyl with 7,000 units pressed (4000 in the US and 3500 in the UK

The Glove repress with 6000 units (3500 in the US and 2500 in the UK)

13,000 units moved through Record Store Day in 2013

2012 - Entreat Plus with 5000 units in the US

Three Imaginary Boys - 2500 units in the UK

Faith - 2500 units in the UK

Seventeen Seconds - 2500 units in the UK

Pornography - 2500 units in the UK

The Top - 2500 units in the UK

17,500 units moved through Record Store day, which I believe is the highest for anybody through RSD in 2012!

2011  Seventeen Seconds through Music on Vinyl

2010 - Disintegration - .10,000 in the US and 10,000 in the UK

Entreat Plus - self released limited to 1000 splatter vinyl

2008 - 2010  The Head on The Door and Staring at the Sea (the singles) through the Back to Black compaign

So...yeah...when you look at these numbers, The Cure really promote RSD!  Also, there are so many copies out there, if you don't have something from The Cure in your vinyl collection, you might just be a douche bag!

I splurged on the KMKMKM reissue this year and couldn't be happier... Great sound and I LOVE the aesthetic look of the blood-red vinyl. I even wound up tracking down the colored version of Pornography afterwards.

Cure vinyl in general is REALLY hard to find used... Obviously there's folks selling on the Internet, but the prices are going up. Our store has gotten ONE record in over the last 6 months, and it was The Top.

Join The Dots would be a great vinyl release if they cap it at 6 records... AKA no B-sides after Wish.

Don't forget they were also one of the inaugural bands to take part in the Record Store Day Secret 7" charity series, which started in 2012 by doing their "Friday, I'm in Love" single (100 copies, each with a unique sleeve)

I live in wv so this may have something to do with it, but i have never saw any used cure records at my local record store. Ive scored a few from the fine folks on this board, and found some good deals on eBay.

I also fully concur with the thought of a show/paris boxset. That would have the potential to turn out real nice, even though i doubt it will ever happen.

And btw Somebody sell me both of these please.

I've had decent luck with Cure records around here, but it's a lot of the same stuff and usually overpriced. I probably see The Head on the Door and those Elektra promo 12" singles from the mid-80s the most. Most of my Cure collection has been bought online as well; every once in a while I get some decent scores on eBay, and I've imported some of the cooler UK releases like the purple Let's Go to Bed 12".

Show/Paris boxset would be perfect, two of the few albums I'm missing. Cure vinyl from that period is ridiculously expensive... anyone ever see the prices Bloodflowers brings these days?

I dunno if it's because I work behind the counter on RSD but I definitely look forward to 'the event'. It's a crazy day for us and is a lot if fun. A social, communal circle jerk of all things vinyl, of all generations and taste. It could be that our shop doubles as a bar that lifts the 'stress' off the day but I've always seen it as a blast for all parties involved. I've seen at least three bands form amongg strangers waiting in line or checking out. It is what you make of it, but not everyone has the communal outlet of a record store in their home town. Exploitative? Sure, for some. Communal and a shuffling of the deck in terms of who you meet around a common medium? Hopefully. Have a lot more positive memories attatched to it than negative. The main point is that it gets people in a record store.
