The Ambient & Experimental Thread

Recommended Posts

Recently discovered RICHARD SKELTON...and his various monikers such as A Broken Consort....He is amazing....

also been digging indie outfit....VILLAGES   http://villages1.bandcamp.com

Nils Frahm is amazing

found this the other day too! http://traubeck.bandcamp.com

I tend to bend more toward modern classical....If any one is interested in the ambient classical stuff I have a boat load of recommendations

The Bartholomaus Traubeck stuff is amazing, especially given its origin:

A tree's year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently.

Yeah, both of these are great. I felt lucky to stumble on the vinyl of both of these a few months back. I'm excited about his upcoming record as well.

I'm listening to Slow Walkers now on spotify. So far I'm really liking it.

You should check out Grouper (one half of Slow Walkers) if you haven't. She is one of the best at what she does.

Ravedeath/Tim Hecker are absolutely amazing. Can't wait for his new album this fall. Anybody a Oneohtrix Point Never fan? His Tim Hecker collaboration was pretty decent but his solo stuff is wonderful.

Everything you said is spot on.

On the shameless self-promotion tip, i play in a shoegaze/experimental trio called AIM LOW...we have a CD-R our that got some sweet reviews and put out a cassette recently.  We've played with Locrian, Moon Duo, Psychic Paramount and some other cool bands...we should be around NYC/NJ area on tour later in mid October and will be opening for the Disappears/Weekend tour on the two Canadian dates (Montreal and Toronto).

You can steam all our tunes here - http://aimlow.bandcamp.com, most of them are free or pay-what-you-can

Would love to hear what you guys think!

Replica is a trip and a half.  I haven't listened to enough of his work to achieve full appreciation quite yet, but I do like what I've heard.  I still need to hop on the new album he dropped earlier this month.  (Or was it last month?)

Also, someone should PM me when Slow Walkers gets repressed.  I'd consider myself a fairly big Grouper fan, but was completely unaware of said project.  Bummed I missed it on the first round -- but I won't be making the same mistake twice.

Hadn't heard of that either. Interesting.

The project was announced a couple years back but the record just came out of nowhere like a month ago. It was weird. I heard about it from the Kranky facebook page.

My friend is waiting on the repress too, so i'll try to remember to remind you, Derek.

Yep, it's Peak Oil. I'll have my friend send me the email where they explain that it is getting repressed later and see if there is a date or anything. He bought a copy of the first press but apparently they oversold so his order was cancelled.

http://www.omgvinyl.com/ does a pretty good job with announcing preorders for a lot of ambient / drone / experimental material, a lot of it goes real quick though.

Thanks for recommending dude, found a crazy good bundle of ambient LPs coming with Federico Durand's pre-order album, right here: http://www.desirepathrecordings.com/releases/federico-durand-el-idioma-de-las-luciernagas/

The Pop Ambient compilations from Kompakt are worth tracking down.

Also William Fowler Collins is a joy to listen to if you like your ambient on the dark side

Boomkat meet most of my needs for this kind of music- good range and they are one of the few stores that offer reasonable international postage, plus their packaging is awesome- best I've come across in several years  of mail order purchases

  • 2 weeks later...

Jon Hopkins has some super chill stuff, some tends to be more percussive and at times he does glitchy abrasive stuff but then there's songs like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzxNt44Gozc and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc1IkYwKCtM. Highly recommend his albums Insides and Immunity. He has nice pianos going on but I get really into the little details and background ambiance he uses. Also been getting into Stars Of The Lid a lot. Suppose I could throw a shameless plug out and say I do ambient/post-rock stuff myself if my sig didn't already make that clear. Most of it is more post rock but I'm currently working on an EP that's mostly ambient stuff for a few friends that have been having a lot of sleeping trouble lately. Also:

Tycho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mehLx_Fjv_c

Stars Of The Lid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et_lDyRymrw

Telefon Tel Aviv: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrM525mS-2whttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYnmP8HOZ00http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad8mR9KO6l4 (not the full song but I love this video)

None of these guys are a big secret or anything but I figured I'd throw them out there if anyone hadn't heard them.

(Invada UK)

Adrian Utley (Portishead) brings together an orchestra of electric guitar players to interpret Terry Riley's 'In C'.

Written in 1964,‘In C’ is one of the most influential pieces of music from the 20th Century, it established minimalism as a music genre. In C's simple musical rules - 53 musical phrases in C and no duration - allow for infinite variations.

Utley's impressive Guitar Orchestra is augmented by organs and a clarinet making for a mesmeric sound experience. The Guitar Orchestra consists of 24 musicians from Bristol: 19 guitarists including John Parish (PJ Harvey), Thought Forms, and Jim Barr (Portishead live band); 4 organs and a bass clarinet.

The effect is an organic musical experience very much created in front of the audience both fragile and thunderingly uplifting.

“I've been exploring the sonic possibilities of massed guitars for a while now in various contexts from pure noise to the sacred choral music of Arvo Part. So it was interesting to see what would happen if we had 20 electric guitars plus organs playing ‘In C’. It is an amazing piece of writing and original thought. A new free idea of organised group playing. The beginnings of what we know as minimalism." Adrian Utley

Invada Records will release this specially recorded live version of 'In C' by Adrian Utley’s Guitar Orchestra on 14th October 2013. The album was recorded live at St Georges Hall, Bristol, one of Britain’s leading concert halls which is known for its astounding acoustic and unique atmosphere.

The core members of the orchestra will tour later in the year augmented by musicians from the countries they visit including England, France and Poland.
