brianmorgante
So my girlfriend and I are moving to St. Petersburg, FL in 10 days. We're excited to get out of the north (we currently live in PA) and head down south. We've loved the area every time we've been through on tour, and in all my visits to Florida over the past 8 years, I've never had one bad experience. Any of you live in the area? We have some friends, but we're looking at this as a whole new chapter of our lives. Would love to hang out with some fellow VC'ers, learn the ropes of the area! catalinacaper
I'm from the other side of the state, but I've been to the Tampa/st pete area a million times growing up. Downtown St Pete is a really nice area, extremely dog friendly (if that matters), and a few really nice venues and places to hang out. Tampa is a bit of a crapshoot.. It's the strip club capitol of the US and can be a bit dicey in the wrong areas of town. Florida in general is a real different experience than most of the rest of the US. Be prepared for a lot of old, interolerant people and a lot of bad drivers. If you ever want to make a day trip to the other side of the state, let me know, I lived in Melbourne/Port St Lucie for 22 years. brianmorgante

rtw88
I grew up about an hour an a half south of St. Pete and now live about an hour and half north of it. Florida is awesome. I really don't think there are many places I'd rather live. Welcome. Just stay away from the Atlantic coast and south Florida. brianmorgante

deadreckoning
I went to school for a bit in St. Pete and my grandparents have lived in bradenton for 30+ years. It has gotten increasingly more crowded (manatee county was a major housing bubble) over the years. Plus, you really notice the Snowbirds in the winter. But, all in all, I like the area. There is the beach and if you want to get away from people you can get out in the swamps and look for rattlesnakes. Good times. Gainesville isn't too far either. brianmorgante
At this point I've been to Florida on about 20-25 separate occasions, and every single time has been a positive experience by the end of the day. I am not a fan of South Florida, the farthest south I'll go is the greater Tampa Bay area. We've avoided going any farther south on any tours, haha. The only time I was ever in Miami was on tour with Edison Glass and I got a knife pulled on me by a bum. Only experience I've had like any anywhere on the country. I haven't been back there since 2006, and don't really plan on returning ever, haha. I've always enjoyed Jacksonville, but I think more just because of the people I've been connected to in that area. Overall, the Tampa area has always kept me captivated (again, most likely because of the people and experiences unique to my different visits there), so I look forward to actually exploring the area more on a day to day basis. Really looking forward to my new life down there, it's just what I need right now!

converge88
Anything in Spring Hill worth exploring? No deff not. But brooksville is next to spring hill and has a lot of civil war history and supposedly haunted stuff too.

catalinacaper
Outside of your major towns and the obvious cities in Florida, all there are are suburbs. Suburbs on top of suburbs. Walmart's on top of Publix's on top of Target's.
mike_eppenbro
I live in spring hill. Most have probably never heard of it but I'm about an hour north of tampa. I've been there! My ex has family that we went and visited last August. Not much to see there, but I thought it was a nice, quiet area. I'm from Ft. Lauderdale. Currently live in Orlando. Just sayin! On the trip though, we went into Orlando and I stopped at Park Ave CD's and that place fucking ruled. Bought so many records, I had to buy a separate suitcase to put them in for the flight home. And you can go see the ocean, if you're into that shit.
brianmorgante
Our move in date got backed up to the 1st due to some leaky pipes in the walls. Sigh. We had everything packed and ready to go, and thankfully it was a last minute discovery that is immediately getting taken care of. It's a bummer to have to wait another two weeks or so, but in the long run, I guess it works out because we get a problem fixed before having to deal with it while living there, and don't have to pay the half month november rent, hahaha. I'm just ready to get to Florida already.

rtw88
Ah, leaking pipes. Welcome to Florida. My parents had issues with those for years and each time they would have to rip up some tile and jackhammer through the kitchen floor. After the 4th or 5th time they ran out of replacement tiles and the tile was no longer in production so it was easier just to replace the pipes altogether. The copper plumbing they installed in a lot of the developments corrodes super easily here.

turbobrando
Not to thread jack, but what's the situation in Orlando like? I may possibly be reloacted there for my job
edgedestroys
I think it's pretty cool here. If you're into the theme parks at all that's obviously something to do. Lots of awesome places to eat. If you're one of those "it's raining/I'm bored, guess I'll go to the mall" kinda people we have two massive malls to go kill time in (our hottopic gets decent records in pretty often). I'm always on a tight budget so I don't go out and do much but there's definitely stuff to do. It's a major city so lots of tours/bands come through although I haven't been to many shows at all lately. The trade off with Orlando is that the traffic on I4 really sucks because there's so many retired old people and tourists. Accidents literally every day, but that aside I dig it. I've been slacking really bad on going and checking out local record shops around here but I've heard nothing but good stuff about Park Ave CDs and Rock And Roll Heaven. turbobrando

mrc
I live in the Tampa bay area (in safety harbor - a suburb of tampa and st pete - 30 mins away from each). St pete is great, where in st pete are you moving to? Notable st pete establishments: Venues - State theater (on central - 600 block) - larger shows like face to face, teenage bottlerocket... size bands (maybe like 1200 capacity) Local 662 (on central - 600 block) - smaller shows like guttermouth, old man markely, TSOL (couple-few hundred capacity) Fubar (on central - 600 block) - tiny hole in the wall bar that can fit maybe 100-150. there are not a ton of shows here but i caught the Ataris there last year. Janus live - large courtyard venue - outside - couple thousand capacity. i just saw rancid there a couple months back. Also on central but down towards the water. Record shops - Daddy kool - not great but mostly new releases, show tickets, cds... this is on central in the 600 block - planet retro - good deal of used records come through here, prices can be a bit high at times but i have scored some killer stuff here. they just moved again and i havent been to their new store yet but its on central near the taco bus. - tampa/ybor - has microgroove. its a small shop with mostly used vinyl and its pretty good. its in seminal heights like 10 mins from downtwon ybor/tampa. worth the trip as there are some good places to eat in that area. - sound exchange and Mojo records/book - are both in Tampa near the busch gardens area of town... maybe like 45 mins north of st pete. st pete has had several new breweries open up along central. i have been to cycle brewery and thats pretty nice place. the burg, the bends, octave, the emerald, fubar... are all places/bars i seem to end up when going out in st pete but there are a decent chunk of bars & restaurants in the area. taco bus is a 24 hour joint that is pretty popular with everyone. They have veggie and vegan options if you are either. Not sure if you are a dog owner, but st pete has a nice dog beach that we usually hit up a few times a year. that should help you out a bit. let me know if you have any specific questions and i will do my best to fill you in. good luck with the move. brianmorgante
