If you are put off by the whole 'drone' idea like I was, this may be worth 10 to 15 minutes to experiment with some more mainstream concepts. Nadja incorporate elements from other genres like shoegaze and some doom metal, with Queller, having (to my ears) taking some high end shrill off, and bring a very accessible tone to their faithful followers and perhaps reaching out to the uninitiated as well. It took me about 3 months, but I listened to almost everything Nadja put our or collaborated on, and took some notes as well (it was about 50 iirc) Massive seems about right Maybe not as prolific as Buckethead - what 8 albums this year so far? - but still. There seems to be certain patterns or themes in Baker's writing, and I agree with eskimoswim, many of the releases sound the same with subtle nuances, especially in 'texture' and could easily be merged into one 7 hr drone. Some of the patterns were immediate turn-offs, and one in particular seemed to click. The first that sent me into a trance was The Bungled and the Botched (headphones were better than speakers after a long day) Thaumogenesis was almost as good. Radiance of Shadows was next...and I stopped there for the older issues, because I got tired of getting up to flip the albums, so I just listened to downloads... Then, Dagdrom was a boomer, so I jumped on that with the /100 and all autographed, Green vinyl. The Perfect World collab with Vampillia on Important Records was along that some vein of drone, so I couldn't resist the PO. Long Dark Twenties is a great 8 minute 7" and I'm still looking for the RED one Just recently some of the lower press issues I said I wouldn't get came up in a sale, so I picked them up.... again, probably along all the same 'sound' vein: Touched Truth Becomes Death Guilted By The Sun Belles Bettes Skin Turns to Glass (more uptempo) and Under The Jaguar Sun (the first 5 tracks vs the 2nd 5 experimental) are also on my list, as well as most of the Pyramids collab, but I never clicked with Corrasion or Bodycage as much. I could drone on and on... Queller will probably turn into my favorite, and glad to see folks chiming in here. We probably needed a Nadja thread somewhere anyways. It's still odd to me that it didn't get a pressing, I hope Hydra Head gets around to it eventually (since they're focusing their effort on old releases exclusively now). I also wish When I See The Sun It Always Shines on TV would get a vinyl or cassette release. Let me also add Desire In Uneasiness. I like some of Bodycage and Corrasion has "Numb" which is awesome. There is a Japanese CD called Numbness that has "Alien In My Own Skin" which is also a stellar track. I have had Queller for a while and will also agree that it is some of their best work (though Radiance Of Shadows will probably remain my favorite). I cannot get into Dagdrom nor the majority of the splits and collaborations (though I will echo the need for a proper vinyl release of the Pyramids one). GHOSTDRONES Posted February 25, 2014 Share Posted February 25, 2014 As far as Corrasion, I believe the latest mix and master (the 3rd I believe) is the best so far as individual sounds seem a bit clearer and more distinct rather than muddy; and its volume got a boost. Nadja has so many versions of the older releases like The Bungled and the Botched (which has at least two versions), Bliss Torn From Emptiness (again two versions) and Skin Turns To Glass (another with two versions) where the song lengths can be wildly different as can the overall sound of those recordings. Flipper didn't do anything for me either, even though for a good cause, I couldn't pull the trigger. I should clarify -- but didn't want to do a whole journal -- that are definitely tracks on albums that I like, but as a whole couldn't justify after several attempts.. like Corrasion, Bodycage (all of its color variants are tempting), Desire in Uneasiness, etc. The Life and Death Of A Wasp is such a cool title, and great art, but - sorry if I run over any toes - I couldn't find a single part of that one to click at all. Subjective. It probably comes out out to about 25% I will eventually own on wax, and have mp3's of others. And I didn't mention his collab with Alicia Merz (birds of passage) -- wow, what eerie track, but fits perfectly with the theme re: Marquis de Sade... No love for Dagdrom? That's OK, it really is so subjective -- and my mood has a lot to do with whether to even tee up Nadja. But this Queller - it's all around solid and all-occasions.
