  3. I was going to put this in the poetry thread, but I thought that it wouldn’t hurt to have a separate thread. I teach 3rd grade in a high poverty urban area. In my classroom I teach the kids the craft of poetry, even though it is not a part of our curriculum. I feel it’s an important avenue for them to express their views and to realize how powerful they can be with their words. This allows even the lowest achieving students to realize success because the focus is on expression rather than mechanics or correct grammar. One of the experiments I started doing was to play them music by Explosions In The Sky while they were writing. I’d give them the title and let them use the music to influence their writing. Through the years I have collected some good ones and decided to make an anthology of these titles to give to the band. This is the email I got from them: Hey there, This is Chris, the drummer from Explosions in the Sky. Sorry it's taken so long to send you a message, but we just got back from tour recently and there are always a million things to catch up on once we're home. Anyway, I just wanted to thank for giving us the copy of The Season of the Waterfall. We all read the poems and were deeply moved. Not even sure what to say other than that i'm glad that there are people like you helping out and doing things like this. Reading them was not easy. They were beautiful but also incredibly heartbreaking. If there is some way for us to help out, please let me know. Even if its something dumb like sending you a bunch of CDs or something to give to your class. I'm not really sure 3rd and 4th graders would have any interest in meandering, long winded instrumental rock music, but I can't really think of anything else. A lot of people have given us stuff over the years but nothing has compared to this collection of poems. Not even close. Thank you. Sincerely, Chris explosions in the sky Here are some of the poems. Please keep in mind that I teach them the craft, give them the tools, but this is 100% their writing. I wish I could take credit for what they write, even sometimes steal some of the lines for my own lyrics. I’ve had mothers and fathers in tears as they read their child’s poems. It amazes me every time I read a new one. These are all using titles from EITS songs. The Birth and Death of the Day Death is in the sky and Light is in the ground. When people say be gone death death stays. It never went and now it disappeared like fallen warriors. Light has come back to the sky. -Jorge Our Last Days As Children We used to go to the park together then it was time to grow up. You are a fashion designer and I am a doctor. We get off work at 3:00 and see each other at the buffet and eat and talk about when we were little and remember times like when we ate chocolate mint ice cream on Saturdays, when we played with each other, when we were friends forever when we played Bratz and you used to be Sasha and I would be Cloe, when we went to each other’s houses and watched Disney movies, When we used to talk about ourselves and what colors we liked. You liked red and I liked pink. When we played dodgeball and we would be on the same team and we would run or jump so we wouldn’t get out, but we would catch the ball and get other people out, when we painted each other’s nails, when we colored each other’s drawings. when we played soccer and we would win, during recess we would play four square and you would be in the A square and I would be in B. After we talk we start to cry. I miss those things. -Lilibeth The Only Moment We Were Alone I feel dead dead like nothing People just pass by like Nothing Ghosts being nothing Laying down being a jerk Biting ghosts one at a time Water from God biting water forever. -Juan

  6. I didn't watch back when Carlito was actually around, but I've seen vids since. I like his straightforwardness. He lets you know up front that if you don't want to be cool, he's going to spit in your face, and I respect that.

Nicky... No, i don't like to get drunk and snuggle. If I'm snuggling I probably have a boner, and I'm to use it.

  9. Yes. that is a perfect idea. Let me roll it around in my head. A Kickstarter might be good or maybe even working directly with TRL. I don't know what contractual obligations Explosions has and might be good to tie TRL in with the project anyway to promote their label. I'm sure there will be some sort of school district redtape to deal with. Well, let me start looking into it. Thanks for the great idea, Dreamover!

  14. Based On A True Story would be a perfect record to be released just standard black in a relatively large pressing. If it did have to have a color I would say a pure olive green would look rather divine. Still...an album just waiting to be pressed that should.

  15. I wouldnt hold your breath on it happening. I remember back at Fest GIM posting on facebook about how they were pissed off that the label didnt give them any cds or records to sell at their table. About 20 minutes later (and me commenting about how all bands say that about PandP) the entire post was deleted and nary a word was said again by them about PandP. It is a shame if they are slowing down and decided to stop playing as I know they have a lot of supporters online, but fuck, I cant blame them when their label is so shitty.

    Mineral vinyl

I'm not trying to treating anyone like the bad guys really. I just think for a company that has done so much previously in the vinyl game it's kind of strange to pull a rookie move like this and ship records out in one of the worst ways I have ever seen. I'm sure I will be perfectly satisfied with Crank when they respond to my email and get me a new copy that isn't warped. But you have to admit the fact that they "sold out" of the blue, but now it appears they have more to send out for those who had their copies damaged in transit is a little sketchy. Not to mention the $22 price hike to get the blue. Just sayin.

  26. Thanks for posting that. I'm not sure if I think he's actually doing it that way or if, like Blanchard said, he's tired of doing it and avoiding it. I think if anyone was going to be able to write and record them on his own and release them for fans on the net, it would be Casey. I also love the idea of him doing a book or something similar. I know a lot of people think he's an asshole sometimes, but he inspires me a lot. He's one of those bands who mixes my two favorite things, music and writing, and creates something awesome. Not to mention his story takes place in one of my favorite periods in history. That's not to say I don't love The Color Spectrum, and that I'm not insanely stoked for this, because I do, and I am. I just really hope he finds a way to get his story finished.

  29. That's what I love about being an internet pirate I was originally shown a friend's VHS copy years back, but I think I have a digital somewhere around here. I don't recommend that anybody actually spends any money to see it, as you'll probably feel ripped off when you see the movie was basically shot on a handheld camcorder with horribly shitty production values, and is pretty much a joke. It's just interesting to see how realistic they made it look (especially for the late 80s with no budget) and if you have a buddy to laugh at horror movies with, this is definitely the mother of all gems. Necrophilia filmed in a serious manner to a classical music track? Yes please. In my opinion (especially with this movie) it's really best to have a friend you can watch horror movies with, it's much easier (for me, anyway) to gauge other people's emotions and respond when things are supposed to be funny (or not supposed to be funny but still are), as well as when things are supposed to be serious and work well in doing so. It also just makes me feel less less awkward when I'm watching horrible and depraved shit on the TV screen. Rape films are hard to watch for a reason, but that doesn't make them pointless. Irreversible is really an amazing film. The opening line of the film "Time changes everything" is the theme of the film and everything follows that motif. It's stylistically amazing, as the camera techniques literally take the viewer from Hell in the beginning of the film when the two guys are running through the demented sex house with those almost unwatchable shakey cam shots, to Heaven at the end of the movie when she's in the field reading the book on the sunny day. It's all about how time has changed the characters and what their actions have meant. I understand why people have a hard time watching them, and I couldn't ever feel comfortable watching them with a girl (even my horror-movie loving gf), but I still wouldn't say they're pointless. To me, ultimately, one of the marks of any good film is that it's memorable. And some of the shit in Irreversible and A Serbian Film I feel like I'll never forget. I don't really know where I was going with this post. Dead body sex. Yeah.

  37. locals soften the C and pronounce it like "Quinzee", which is one of the weirder non-Haverhill/Billerica pronunciations around here imo. I've never really heard "Yar-moth" before. Sometimes I've heard "Yar-mouth" (just like it's spelled) but not really very often. I've definitely never heard "Kings town" or an over-emphasized "Brain tree" before.
