I bought like 20 copies of that last Coheed and Cambria album at hot topic. Here's hoping it pans out for me.

  5. Coheed and Cambria In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (sealed) Blue/Gray 2xLP RAFFLE Rules/Guidelines: (most of these are more or less just guidelines to keep this raffle fair and fun for everyone) Chances will be sold at $ 5.00 each and will be limited to a maximum of 20 chances per VC member. To enter you must first message me with the amount of chances you intend to purchase at the time. Once I've received your message I'll provide you with my PayPal email address and you can send payment. (Please make payment as a "gift" and include your VC username as well as the word "raffle" somewhere within the note via the PayPal transaction.) UPDATE: Replying to each message is going to be time consuming, so my paypal email address is [email protected] (Just notify me via message once you've made payment so I can update the entry list. Thanks!) Chances can be purchased in separate transactions, but before you buy a chance please message me first. This raffle will run for one week and the winner will be announced on 02/26/2013 at around 5:00PM CST...maybe a little earlier or later but somewhere around then. (I hope to have someone designated to capture the drawing by this date.) Out of courtesy, I ask that everyone keep this public. (not making outside deals with other members for money or trades) I will constantly be keeping this thread updated so everyone will know the number of chances that have been purchased by each member. Since this is a raffle, I have no control over how much money it will bring me. All I ask is that I don't catch any grief if it ends bringing a lot. I know this is a really sought after album so I can't say I don't expect a lot of people to buy chances. Regardless, whether I make $5 or $500+, the album will go to the winner of the drawing. I know those are a lot of guidelines for just one raffle, but I wanted to cover everything I could picture being a problem for anyone, including myself. Let's keep this fair and fun. If this raffle is successful, I'll most likely run a few more in the future. Also, if anyone can think of other rules/guidelines to include, let me know. Good luck everyone and thanks for your interest. Entries: fuckoffleatherjacket (x2) blaffin (x2) Ryan8765 (x2) sea2113 (x3) S0matic (x10) Fischmioli (x10)

  6. No "BOO!"! Haven't you heard? As long as you need funds to buy a record, it's socially acceptable to flip!

  22. I don't see why everyone is having a fit and falling it in over this release. You honestly think the re-releases from hot-topic are all "artist approved"? There are army's of lawyers that look over this stuff, it wouldn't be put out if it wasn't legal. The label owns the masters, probably spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the band. The band broke up, barely toured and probably are in the hole to the label for a ton. if the re-release is done right, sounds great and is done well, what's the problem? There has been an insane demand for all of their releases on vinyl for years, it's their own fault for not capitalizing on it themselves. Also, there is no way you can "flatten" a record and have it be fine, it screws it up permanently.

  33. in defense of SRC, the licensing process is very cloudy, when i first started dealing with majors there was a period where i was told their lawyers were clearing everything.. naively i thought this meant all parties involved. I did run into a situation where an album i had licensed no longer was owned by the label, and had i not had the foresight to contact the band involved before pressing it would have been a huge financial disaster. But also the music business is a business, if a band didn't want their musics presentation to be out of their hands, they shouldn't have signed over the rights. Being on a major label is essentially work for hire, if i create something at my job the company has full ownership of that and can do whatever they want with it, and i won't have a message board up in arms about it right?

    The Ska Thread

When I was 14, I mailed off a form for one of those 10 CD's for a penny kind of deals. I ordered some of the third wave/third wave tinged stuff of the time - Less Than Jake, No Doubt, etc, because I was really loving that sound. I ended up grabbing a Madness greatest hits disc as well as a cd of stretched out Skatalites songs (bought that one just because the word ska was in the band name). From there, I was in love. Found a comp called 100% British Ska a couple of years later when I was 16 and then a couple of years out of high school, began collecting ska vinyl like crazy - for awhile, I was obsessed with locating 2 Tone singles in their original sleeves with the Walt Jabasco on them (I would refuse to buy copies that had been issued stateside by Chrysalis, instead only tracking the British imports). When I moved to Chicago, I began hunting for old Blue Beat records - anything that had stamps on it indicating that it might have come from Prince Buster's shop in Jamaica at some point or another. That led into a downward spiral towards collecting tons of Studio One compilations, rocksteady comps (tons of Treasure Isle stuff) and then eventually skinhead reggae (super early Trojan and Dandy Livingston, stuff like that) as well as dub, a genre that still sticks with me to this day. In all, I've probably got 400-500 records spread across the entire breadth of Jamaican music, even some Mento and Calypso stuff. I seriously love ska. One time, several years ago, when I was in NYC, I actually made it out to Coxsone Dodd's (the guy behind Studio One) store. By that point, he'd been long passed away, but his daughter (or maybe, at that point, grand daughter?) was running the shop and any time I would ask about a particular record, she'd take it and put it on the turntable and play five second shards of each song to let me hear - just like I'd read about them doing in record shops back in Jamaica. Pretty amazing experience. Her son was sitting in the backroom listening to crunk rap on the computer. hahah
