  1. This is a little late, but- A FUCKING IPAD?!?! Seriously? I thought I did pretty alright with my Secret Santa, and I added a couple of sentimental things, so overall- I hope he/she isn't disappointed. I received mine yesterday, but, like last year, I refuse to open it until Christmas week. Side note: I'm not sure if anyone has gotten all sappy about the whole SS thing in a bit, but I was talking to the lady last week while putting things into a box and she asked "what the hell are you doing?". To which I replied, "Secret Santa, of course." She thought this community was the coolest, most amazing thing in the world. I told her about how all kinds of people (who have only had a number of online conversations, come together for so much stuff (conversation, opinion, etc), and instead of her thinking I was a giant nerd, she thought it was just so awesome. Dear Vinyl Collective Board, I truly love you all. You are better than the bees knees and the cats pajamas.

  2. I dated this girl for a while. She was really a... nasty freak. She just loved to get down with sex all the time. It was like... anytime of day, she was like, "Yeah, let's go! I'm so nasty!" And I'd be nailing her and she'd be like, "Oh, you're nailing me! Cool!"

  11. John Mayer is not the most technically proficient guitarist but he is a damn good collaborator and has a feel that can't be denied. If he had never hit it big with those shitty pop love songs, and had the consequential tabloid fallout, he would be a force to be reckoned with in the modern white boy rock-RnB scene. Luckily those shitty pop songs made him independently wealthy so he can spend his days doing dope shit like playing with Pino fucking Palladino and Steve Jordan. Forget you even know who the dude is for a minute. If you don't find this song immensely enjoyable and an example of incredible talent, or if you can't raise an intelligent counter argument beyond "haha lolz", then you're incapable of judging music beyond the confines of your own stereotypes and comfort zone.

  13. I attended the WFMU rec fair this evening and Rutherford was in the house, selling a box of these for $20 each. A friend of mine spoke to him and got the impression that the pressing was /1000, and that about 400 were sold so far. I picked up a copy, but didn't get into those details with him. I just told him I liked the project and that if I spotted any good deals on a first press white album, I'd let him know.

  15. Beginner’s Guide to Hi–Fi Created to hopefully aid anyone venturing into this stressful, beautiful hobby. I will update this with more information whenever I have time to waste. Anyone is welcome to chime in. Basic Hi-Fi Chain: SOURCE -> AMPLIFICATION -> SPEAKERS (click to jump to section) The source component reads the recorded information and translates it into the signal that will be later perceived as sound. Amplification takes that signal and amplifies it (no, really?) in order to make it strong enough to move the drivers of the speaker. A speaker is a collective of drivers that are moved by the signal, producing air pressure in front of them which to us, mortal beings, means hearing sound. When putting together a hi-fi setup, always keep in mind: The end result will only be as good as the weakest link. Buying an expensive turntable and a good phono preamp is useless if you're using cheap computer speakers. By no means should you decide to just get a shitty turntable then. Instead, think carefully how to ration your budget across all important components. Jump to setting up & use: SOURCE, AMPLIFICATION, SPEAKERS LIST OF RECCOMENDED EQUIPMENT FOR DIFFERENT BUDGETS

  27. Fuck man. I got too drunk and passed out. Now I am up at 5:30 with the beer shits. Thanks for engaging. I would agree with Dan as far as chops and soul but to me he is just sort of pure energy on the guitar. I'd have to say the same about Jack White. The man has decent chops and definitely some mad genius-like quality about him but he and Dan both lack a certain tenderness that I believe John brings to his playing. John can throw down with the best of them in a high energy fuck your face kind of solo, but (I think) almost more importantly he has that other side that many great guitarists lack, where what he doesn't play speaks almost as much as what he does play. Too many technically genius guitarists just try to cram as many notes as quickly as possible into a run because- why the hell not? But there is something to be said for letting the song breathe. I liken him to Clapton in this way. That man knows how to play the guitar almost lyrically. Every solo has a purpose and really takes the song somewhere, it's not just that musical masturbation like I referred to earlier. I know this whole topic is really subjective, I just think that John Mayer is an incredible rock/folk/blues guitarist that got famous for writing cheesy pop songs and put in this box so real music lovers sometimes tend to write him off.

  32. I'm going to say Jack White. Not because he is the greatest player, but because he's the modern Miles Davis - every note he plays is not perfect, but thought out and deliberate. He also has crafted a very distinct tone.

  33. Shit this is really subjective. I'd have to say Dave Grohl. Hey may not be the best technically but he writes some catchy riffs.

  41. i am the most reserved, non violent person ever but if i saw this guy in real life i'd punch him in the face for both the trouble he causes so many board members and simply because i feel bad for how low his quality of life/intellectuality must be, so why not make it worse. he must spend so much fucking time bidding and then not buying. his excuse with me was that "he had a messy divorce and his wife got his records in the break up, so he needed to buy them back but couldn't pay till pay day". what is even the point of wasting your time bidding, telling people that you will pay later, and then not paying. is he hoping someone will send the record before receiving payment?
