  1. Y'all, It's happening! A deal has been struck and I thank lbw87 so much for being willing to part with this! I'll post some goofy photos once it's back home! Thank you all for tuning in and putting out the word. I cannot believe this is actually happening.

  2. Talking shit is why the internet exists. It's good. He ran Suburban Home Records, a low-to-mid-tier punk label. Circa 2006 he founded Vinyl Collective, which consisted of: A Proboards forum, which through an arcane series of events eventually became this website here A vinyl-only distro – pretty novel at the time as the vinyl revival was just starting to take off. At that point the main punk/hardcore options were basically No Idea and Interpunk and some smaller players, and they had their pluses and minuses but mostly they just carried punk records. Virgil carried all that, plus like, rap reissues and other random stuff, and he'd try to get stuff people asked for, so he was like a one-stop shop. and finally, a vinyl-only label – again, very novel at the time. He pressed vinyl for labels that didn't want to deal with it, including a ton of stuff from Ferret & Red Scare, and big bands like Minus the Bear, Norma Jean, & Portugal the Man. People loved this guy, and the stuff he licensed sold big for the most part. He used his newfound clout to continually expand his operation, growing his distro and putting out a ton of music via Suburban Home. A lot of it was like alt-country/raspy-punk-guy-goes-acoustic type stuff, and I can't imagine any of it holds up at all (I do like the LaGrecia album he put out and I wanna say Stereotyperider was good?) Every release came out on multiple colors, there were limited preorder packages with bottle openers and posters and shit, all the collector gimmicks you can imagine. He started a (frankly pretty great) split 7" series called Under the Influence where bands covered artists who influenced them, and somehow roped in like every artist that was big on Punknews in 2008 to contribute. Some of those singles came out on 3 colors. In retrospect, the first warning sign that he was stretching himself too thin was probably the Cooperative. He hatched this scheme to get 200 people to chip in 60 bucks as an investment, and that money would be used to license, manufacture, and distribute an album that didn't exist on vinyl. Everyone in the Co-op got a copy of the rare color of the record, and the money from selling the remainder of the pressing would go towards the next release. In theory, a never-ending stream of records for 60 bucks! People were gaga over this idea. Shares in the VC Co-Op sold out in minutes. At least one person had a full-blown meltdown on the message board over the fact that they had missed out on buying a share. Personally I had set an alarm but overslept and missed it by minutes. I was so pissed! There was all sorts of stuff around the voting process and making teams and narrowing down the list that I was not there for, but in the end, the first Co-Op release was The Falcon – God Don't Make No Trash, on a 10". As I recall, it did okay. There were some concerned murmurs as Virgil revealed that the record had cost slightly more than anticipated as 10"s cost more to manufacture, but they were reassured that it wouldn't affect the master plan and everything would be fine. The next release was The Jealous Sound – Kill Them with Kindness, on a double LP. A double LP, surprisingly, also cost more than anticipated, and sales were soft. Next up was A Wilhelm Scream – Mute Print, and a sort of complete discography for Gaslight Anthem side project This Charming Man, both relatively straightforward single LP releases. It should be noted that this all took fffooorrreeevvveeerrr. According to Discogs, the first (and only) 4 releases came out in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In between each release, 200 people are milling about the message board waiting impatiently for any kind of update on what should theoretically not take 3 years. While this is happening, Virgil's operation is continuing to expand. He's hiring people and moving into bigger spaces, Suburban Home is putting out tons of music, and at some point there are too many plates spinning and things start taking a turn. He sells "VC for Life" memberships where for $1000 you get everything they release, forever. He takes preorders for Volume 2 of Under The Influence, with promised artists including The Gaslight Anthem and Minus the Bear, which never materializes. For most of VC's run, all his releases were pressed through Pirates Press as they were the only place that was doing all the splatters, hazes & splits that he utilized extensively, but at a certain point he switches to a domestic plant. Later the word from the rumor mill is that he was so in debt with Pirates Press that they wouldn't take new orders from him. Virgil starts blowing out inventory under the guise of clearing out space, doing big bundles of LPs and 7"s for dirt cheap. Labels who were distro-ing with VC start posting threads on the message boards that they've not been getting paid for months. Some of them get deleted, including a legendary one where Tre from Deathwish tells Virgil to answer his email and give him his money, in so many words. People start asking to sell back their shares in the co-op as it becomes clear that it's a sinking ship. While this is all happening, Virgil announces a mother freakin' craft beer tour. In early 2011, the bottom finally falls out and Virgil shutters Vinyl Collective, leaving tons of labels, bands and customers in the lurch. He liquidates everything through eBay and his own store, and disappears for a good while, although according to Discogs, Suburban Home put out a handful of releases between 2011 and 2015. The most valuable asset at that point was the message board, and he sold it(?!?) to ShopRadioCast and Academy Fight Song Records, another label that flamed out spectacularly pretty soon after. And now here we are! Virgil basically lost everything, but he pops up again every few years with an interview in some Colorado alt-weekly about his new business doing promotion for craft distilleries or whatever. He's an ideas guy! It's wild to think that there are people who are regulars here who have no idea about Virgil or Suburban Home. Personally, it was one of the first online communities I was a part of, and although I don't post as regularly anymore, it is comforting to have at least one familiar place that hasn't been swallowed whole by Facebook or Reddit. Long live VC!

  4. so, you need to put it in a safe IMMEDIATELY. Minimum of 6 inch thick stainless steel 316L gauge, submarine steel if you can find one made in that material. Inside the safe itself, place the signed record inside an airtight, vacuum sealed container. MAKE SURE no physical part of the album is touching ANYTHING else. Construct a room in your house which will be the main holding area - you'll need to construct some ramparts in case anyone comes by sea, and some trenches or a moat in case they come for it by land. The room should be at least 25x25 in dimensions - and be sure to spring for the most expensive HVAC system you possibly can - you have NO IDEA how much value your record will lose if even a DROP of humidity touches it. Once you've got the room built and kitted out with the latest and greatest in humidity and temperature control - dig a shaft a MINIMUM of 50 feet deep. You'll need to hire a contractor who can install steel reinforced sides on this shaft so you are not at an increased risk from someone trying to tunnel in and steal the record. Lower the safe, with the record inside, down the shaft slowly - resting on the bottom where it has been stabilized against tectonic movement, earthquakes, etc. Once the safe is safely (haha) at the bottom, you're going to want to fill in the shaft with concrete. Don't worry, the record is perfectly safe if you've followed the rest of this guide -- but this is THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP in making sure this record never sees the devilishly destructive UV rays of the sun or the horrific harm of humidity damage. If you want to display it, make sure you take a picture (flash OFF!!!!!!!!!) before completing the above steps - then frame the picture.

  6. Anyone nab an extra Taylor Swift? I had the last one in the store in my hands but ended up giving it to this girl who was inconsolably in tears when the shop owner told her they were all gone. I overheard the conversation & just broke my heart. The girl is the same age as my niece & reminded me immensely of her. It was obvious she’s more hardcore Swiftie than I & not a flipper. She started crying even more when I gave her the 7”. I believe in karma. So there’s my good deed for the year. 😉

  7. I have no words to express the gratitude and support from everyone so far. This has been an incredibly difficult and unexpected turn of events and experience. My father had been fighting cancer for two years now...for a second time...and was doing well. But three weeks ago this past Wednesday, he complained that was feeling dizzy and not all balanced. We took him to the ER and eventually was admitted and found that he had multiple small strokes in his head, a brain bleed, and a heart issue. The cancer was in his left lung. In those three weeks, his condition physically and cognitively deteriorated. On that last week, it was worse than ever and it's when doctors advised that nothing else could be done. He was taken to hospice on Friday mid-day and passed at 3:00pm or so right as my mother & I arrived to see him as they had notified us he had arrived and was settled in. My brother had to stay home with our dog as she's been having a very hard time with my father's absence up until then. It has been a great deal of a struggle so far in not only these past weeks but also due to his passing. He left us without any info on a will or life insurance or anything of the sort. So we're handling all of this on our own as best as we can. We tried to contact a number of attorneys to assist us, but they're all asking for amounts of money we do not have. Thankfully, I have a few friends locally who have been able to guide us through some things as best as they can. But it all still feels very lonely and it's most hard on my mom as she feels all alone. And we don't have family close by who can stop in and hang out and be with us in these times. But I am thankful for Jared for not only making this post but also looking out and all of the support and love from all you VC'ers. It's incredibly appreciated and makes me feel less alone in dealing with this. We knew that my father would eventually pass but not this fast. But we're comfortable in knowing that he's no longer suffering and passed peacefully and waited to go as soon as we arrived to see him. I am taking comfort in that. Again...thank you so much VC. I feel the love and gives me comfort.

  8. Sooooo...let me understand this. Dude walks in here and gives his honest & lengthy opinion & review of the song as a fan of the band, and people are giving him shit & calling him pretentious?!?! Get the fuck out of here with that shitty attitude. He’s a fan who loves the band & expressed his appreciation. If you don’t like it, take your toxic bashing somewhere else. Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.

  11. And the winner is...randomfortunepa. There were a lot of gasps and awws from my wife as she looked through the entries. Her reasoning for the winner was, "I love black cats and I love Halloween." So there's that. Thanks for everyone who joined! Full disclosure, the shit that went down when I was going to give this 7" away initially was that one of our cats was diagnosed with cancer and was gone within a month. It was one of the hardest things I've had to go through, so sharing all these cat pictures was a great tribute. Hug your babies close!

  12. Tbh, your entitlement is kinda bogus. These things take time and effort, and you’re just assuming that they can handle requests of that magnitude even during a pandemic when most businesses are functioning at lower capacity. If this company were to take specific requests from every individual that orders from them, the amount of problems that could arise are astronomical. Try to consider things like this when kicking and screaming certain services be rendered in order to prevent something that MIGHT happen.

  17. Dear VC, It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I come here today to announce the passing of our beloved Juan's father, who departed from this world 6/30/23. His commitment and efforts to this community extend outside of these boards, and he is a dear friend to many beyond this music community. It's our turn to give back and show our unwavering support to him. Unfortunately, this unforseen and sudden tragedy has left an immense emotional and financial burden on the family. The hospital expenses have been overwhelming, and there are also concerns about the family home's stability in the face of these challenging circumstances. To offer help and alleviate some of the financial stress a GoFundMe campaign will be organized, and shared here shortly. With hope, these funds should ease the excessive medical expenses, and provide them with the means to keep their cherished family home. If you have a moment to extend your heartfelt condolences to @jhulud and his family please do so. May he find comfort in the love and support of this community during this difficult journey of healing.

  27. I just joined interscope Vinyl collective subscription in Jan. January’s record for the interscope vinyl collective. product is Juice WRLD - "Goodbye & Good Riddance" IVC Edition. I received a copy of the Used's In Love & Death! Is this normal? Is it supposed to be a Used vinyl? $48. 38 a month is a lot for a Used record. I’m hoping they made a mistake.. The limited edition factor is what attracted me to this service. If I knew it was the Used I would not have joined.

  28. thanks for your patience with me on this one, y'all. i know there have been some headaches over the last year or so. we've really been going through it. i'm def not trying to make any excuses though and want everyone to be happy with what they ordered. i will say tho, i've had so much support from friends when it gets crazy, but day to day, all customer service, shipping, receiving, inventorying—it's all just me. so it can get kinda backed up sometimes (it is right now). we're bringing on more folks to help soon and gradually rebounding from the whole Awesome Merch fiasco. i can't express how much that knocked us completely on our ass tho. i think we're putting out some of the nicest, high quality, intentionally packaged records of any indie label our size currently despite all that. and i think we're gonna get things more organized and streamlined in the next few months. so, yeah, idk, i am rambling, but i just wanted to say thanks for bearing with us on some super annoying pre-orders. we'll definitely get things humming along again here shortly. oh! also! anyone getting the "Polaris Blue" variant and finding it doesn't look as intended. we're looking into how this happened as this isn't what we ordered. i was as suprised as any of you. here's some copy pasta i've sent a few people who have emailed to inquire about it: tytyty

  29. My guy. I've been holding my tongue, practicing the whole, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," thing. BUT. You need to stop spamming the board with every thought you have. Read the rules/guidelines, read the FAQ, lurk the site to get a general vibe for a little while and then eventually try again. Use the search feature a little bit to see if you get any answers to your questions that way. Nobody here really gives a shit about reading your blog or looking at your social media unless you're in a very specific niche, or very good at what you do. Have you recognized any of the bands/albums that you see posted about on here? You seem mostly interested in classic rock and pop, which makes up a very, VERY miniscule percentage of the posts here. I know I'm not here wanting to mentor someone who is just getting into the hobby who also shares very little of the same musical taste, and I imagine most people here share that same sentiment. I wish you luck on your record journey, but this isn't really a "starting point" type forum. The most active users here have mostly been involved with this forum for well over a decade at this point and have been collecting for much longer than that. We're a little jaded, and a lot sarcastic, and you came in here with a lot of questions as though you've done zero research or work to figure anything out on your own. Take a break from posting, read some threads, come back later, and don't take it too personally.

  30. Haven't logged in here in ages. Came to post about the tour pressings but I see Scott did it already (thanks!) In regards to the cloudy clear. I admit it's a little foolish in retrospect. 3 things 1) its a different matrix. Original pressings look handwritten. This new press is the typed style. 2) if you hold them up together - there is a difference. Clear is straight up clear. 3) new press has a hype sticker saying cloudly clear / original press has zero hype sticker. There's always going to be people who foolishly try and sell a record for more than its "worth" - so if you're in the market for the original press on clear be sure to ask those details. - Jeremy

We in it now. https://merch.ambientinks.com/collections/tychoiso50/weather I still think Awake is the best thing they've released; 2016's Epoch has some incredible moments but doesn't feel quite as consistent with its staying power. I'm really enjoying the direction of this first single, though. At this point in the game, Tycho can afford to push their horizons a bit... and that's what I'm hoping for with LP5.
