  4. New Pirate Ship Quintet is probably the freshest post-rock record I’ve heard in years. On top of the A+ melancholic strings you’ve come to love and expect from them, they’ve managed to tie in some hauntingly gorgeous vocals, saxophone, stellar bass grooves... a bit of everything, really. Your mileage may vary, but for me, Emitter is a shimmery beacon that glistens in a sea of mundane modern post-rock.

  5. It needs to be asked: are you partially employed by SRC or something? It’s like clockwork. Is there any reason you consistently post their links instead of non-shitty webstores like Bull Moose, for example? I don’t count myself as a TBS fan, but did a cursory look over at BM and found Louder Now for $18 and change. Free shipping over $30. Won’t charge until shipped. Won’t play games or hold your funds hostage if you need to cancel. Issues reward points. Why wouldn’t you support them? Knock off the SRC shilling – you’re making me associate disgust with Workaholics and I don’t need that.

  6. Hoping that someone can confirm this, but I heard that the most recent issue of Q magazine has an interview with Doves, who say they are going to release a new album in 2020, and also reissue all older albums starting in May 2019. Lost Souls is a white whale for me so this is massive news if true.

  7. 3 times through, and to my ears, TPSQ have gone lighter vs heavier-- as many of our other favorite postrock bands pull me along-- and without going ambient or adding elcctronica as stated above. Repeating myself, I do love their gritty guitar riffs on the first 2 albums, which thankfully have not completely vanished from Emitter, but only contribute a small fraction to the work. Their song writing/composition just keeps maturing. It's hard to find any flaw. Subjectively, it is a big relief that Emitter is something I like quite a bit alreaady. Admittedly nervous about the sax (and that is one of my instruments), it is masterfully done, as well as the new vocals. Tremendous growing potential as well. Can't wait for the vinyl to get here now! Should have just quoted Derek and wrote "this^^^" lol We have quite a bit of new music from veterans in the postrock universe coming down the pike.

  9. What else are they selling on this tour? Shirts? Any other fun merch? I’m not even holding out hope for the 7” but I’m psyched for the show!

  11. Fleshies - Introducing the Fleshies LP is out May 3rd via Dirt Cult Check out a song premiere via Punk News here Preorder (limited edition blue vinyl/200 and black) here FLESHIES (est. 1999) are a loud punk band from Oakland, California. They are noted for their intense, wild, and often homoerotic stage presence, abrasive-yet-catchy songs that warp and invert countless rock and punk tropes, radical (verging on wingnut) left-wing politics, and punishing tour schedules from the past (133 shows in 131 days at one point in 2003). They have released numerous well-received albums and singles on labels such as Alternative Tentacles, Recess, Life Is Abuse, Thrillhouse, and Adeline, and are on countless compilations (such as MaximumRocknRoll’s “Noise Ordinance” LP). “Introducing The Fleshies” (Dirt Cult Records), the band’s new full-length album, represents a return to form, capturing the energy, raw power, incisive lyrical commentary/humor, and brutalist melodicism of their earlier releases like “Kill The Dreamer’s Dream” (2001) and “The Sicilian” (2003). Recorded and engineered by Brian Plaskett, mastered by Daniel Husayn (North London Bomb Factory). (The) Fleshies are Mattowar, Yvan Kawecki, John No, Brian Plaskett, and Hamiltron (all of whom are original members). FFO: Poison Idea, Vexx, Fitz of Depression, Hickey, Born Against, Scared of Chaka, Night Birds, Neighborhood Brats, Sparks “Fleshies are one of those rare punk treasures that always knows how to kick out the jams live. And while the band labels its genre ‘Mysterious Guy Softcore’ — a play off the once trendy micro-genre of Mysterious Guy Hardcore — its sound is anything but. If you're into frenetic, fast-paced rhythms and off-kilter guitar and vocal workouts, expect to receive your just rewards. Singer John No doesn't sit idle during the band's shows; he can often be found working the crowd into a frenzy.” --Eddie Jorgenson, SF Weekly "These hyperactively yelping Oakland artcore minutemen very much deserve to suck. Yet, somehow, they don't." - Chuck Eddy, Village Voice

  15. I was able to snag two deals just under the wire. Ended up getting both Blaqk Audio variants they offered, as well as Weezer’s Black Album (don’t judge me, I actually dig it haha) for $5.65. Crazy awesome deal. Overall, spent $34 for $73 worth of records. Not too bad.

  25. Been getting my ass kicked, haha. I haven't had too much time to really devote to it just yet, I'm only a couple of bosses in (first area or two still). I'll say, the prosthetics are cool, and I like that there are a decent number of them - but they are nowhere near as cool as the BB weapons, which makes me wish there were a little more RPG elements involved.. using a single Katana the whole game is kind of meh, imo. At the very least they could have done something like the KH route where weapon differences are largely cosmetic and maybe a tiny stat boost here or there for different ones. But boring when there's no drops and 9 out of ten of the items on the ground you try to kill yourself to grab are fucking ceramic shards lol. I'm also just NOT into the setting or themes at all. Samurai/ninja shit does less than 0 for me. To each his own, I know a lot of people are into that - but the dark graveyard medieval/fantasy feel of Dark Souls or the gothic lovecraftian setting of Bloodborne are so much more interesting to me. Still - I always enjoy a From game, and will git gud soon enough I am sure.

  29. Don’t let the saxophone comment offput you, if it did. Anyone who’s followed this band probably expects the inclusion of “vocals” to automatically mean “screaming buried in the mix”, but this time around they’re truly divine. Almost angelic without sounding sappy or over the top — like taking shelter in a monastery while it’s pouring outside and artillery can be heard encroaching from the distance. (Help me out here, Gumby.). Not trying to overhype the record even though it’s probably well past that point. The riffs are sparse - don’t expect any Russian Circles levels of guitar - and the emphasis is still on the strings, as they’ve always been. But barring that, I think it’s one of the most innovative albums of the genre, especially since they didn’t dip into electronics at any point. Something a lot of post-rock stalwarts seem to be doing to “reinvent” themselves, in recent years.

  38. The “what happened to RFC/Topshelf?!?” comments are always pretty hilarious. I hear Pure Noise and No Sleep are still catering to pop punk “kids” and they’d love your business.

  39. Hell yeah bring back cookie cutter bands. I'm so sick of bands not having 98% of their style and output identical to what I already like.
    1 point
  40. I think it says a lot about RFC to venture out and sign acts of various genres and take chances with their roster vs. signing bands that sound exactly the same or like whatever sound is most likely to move units. Also - this new track is great. Ordered.

  41. It is so odd how RFC used to be such a good label ( obviously this is just my opinion and tastes ) and there is but maybe 1 release out of their last 15 I could get into . Loved when Man overboard , transit and such type bands were coming out with records on this label. This I couldn't listen to if you paid me to but I can respect someone for making music like this as you couldn't give 2 shits what other people think if you are.
