RSD 2019 Limited and First Releases
Multiverse and one other reacted to Derek™ for a topic
Your math checks out – barring a couple of bucks, these prices are proportional jokes. I think we're of a dying breed, but that's about my threshold too. I tend to make exceptions for stuff that's incredibly limited, hand-assembled, or of substantial quality / rarity. $35 / $70+ for RSD junk feels like the worst kind of meme.2 points -

Lordy, I'm very happy that's not a standard. $35 about the max I'd want to pay for a double LP2 points -

I noticed that indie stores were starting to list Routine Maintenance as available for preorder despite Hopeless and Loneliest Place on Earth being almost sold out. Digging through Easy Street Record’s database I found this page https://easystreetonline.tuneportals.com/UPC/790692265817/Aaron-West—The-Roaring-Twenties_Routine-Maintenance-Indie-Exclusive-Org-Iex which seems to confirm that there is an indie store variant that is just orange. Probably to compliment Banquet Record’s exclusive blue which matches their own logo as well as the color of the album cover. No images yet, but very probable that this is the case. Check your local or favorite indie store for more information.2 points -

He was in charge of the vinyl purchasing at Hot Topic for a few years and was an active member of this board, so we’d be able to get inside deets on upcoming releases from him and offer up suggestions for pressings and stuff1 point -

fucking RIGHT? One of my favorites as a kid... so mysterious. It's basically 2 movies in one: a suspense thriller and then a feel-good comedy. Early Sarah Jessica Parker too! But yeah, "Radiogaze" makes me feel like I'm cruising through the clouds of a clear blue sky in a flying saucer at Mach 3 hahaha. I love it. Also I checked out that Be Water stuff this morning, that was really really good! Too bad they have no physical media, I would have bought the shit out of that album. Owen with the YATC vibe was pretty spot-on.1 point -

I will say that I listened to Radiogaze for about a year and hated it. Didn't get it. I hated their sound, it was too dense and not what I was looking for in that style. And then one day something just kind of clicked. IMO the back half of the album is the best. I would urge you to at least listen to When > We > Not Enough. "We" is my favorite song, no question. It makes me feel like I'm in Flight of the Navigator, surfing through the clouds with Max in the spaceship. Re: Pillars, that new track is fire. Their old album was pretty straightforward post-rock, by the books. It wasn't bad, but it stole a lot from other bands IMO and I'm really stoked to see them next month at Dunk. Yeah I feel you on this, 100%. Once you get to "Falling Stars" it's fucking go time. I still need more time with "More" (pun i guess? haha) but I've liked what I've heard so far. Who is PSUB? I just googled it and all I got was Purdue Student Union Board XD Did you guys check the new Harborlights song yet? This band is a fucking unknown force... sleepily coming out of Boston and just crushing. They just signed to Deathwish, and should be poised to blow up. They have so many songs I love. Their stuff is about 50/50 with vocals vs. instrumental, and the vocals take some getting used to I think. Their album "Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree" and "Aphelion" gets TONS of play from me. Their drummer is very noteworthy, and you can hear his chops in the new track.1 point -
Also, PSOTY posted on IG today the new album clocks in at 56 min. So almost an hour of heavy af post-metal (allegedly)1 point

I've actually had this sitting idle in my itunes library for who knows how long, but had to come back to it because of your rec. Not much to complain about here, this is very solid stuff. First two tracks give me strong YATC vibes. I don't doubt it! A few weeks back I actually returned to Sheer's Uneasy - I remember you were all over that record when it first dropped. There's still something there that I really like (even if some of those tracks are auto-skips). It's mostly a toss-up with that kind of shoegaze for me, but I'm always open for recommendations. Also, as an aside, that new Pillars track is sooo good. I feel like a hypocrite because I feel like I'm always campaigning for more experimentation in post-rock, and that track is about as by-the-book as it gets, but I can't help it. I need a post-rock release to get excited about and I think that might be it.1 point

I agree and disagree here. Sure they could make more, but isn’t the limited nature what makes it fun for most of people who love RSD? People look forward to camping out, making lists, taking friends and meeting nee people in line and seeing what they get. If everyone knew they could get everything they wanted, would they still care about RSD and these releases? Or say “$40 for a 20 year old soundtrack? Ill wait til its on clearance on Amazon..” At the end of the day, most all of this music can be heard practically free through streaming or buying a used cd for $2(no one listens to ONLY vinyl)..but exclusive limited vinyl is what makes this fun. Its an impulsive, irresponsible, anxious, frustrating, and hopefully really satisfying day for people to share. And its fun to miss something limited and have a new “grail” to seek out or trade for.1 point
