  3. When I first heard it, boring AF but unsainted sounded MUCH better live.

  4. This is crazy. How are Alligator and Boxer not the interchangeable 1&2. Both are unfuckwithable

  8. Not liking this album at all. Feels like an expanded EP and not a proper National album. Hopefully that changes over time, but so far I think this record stinks. :/

  9. Ben, what kind of turnaround are you feeling on this record? Is this something instantly flippable or am I going to have to sit on this one for a year or more?

  10. Cool, cool. Start a vinyl blog but you don't know that the plural of vinyl is vinyl. Get fucked.

  13. I had a copy of the blue s/t pressing. Sold it for $300 and bought a $15 black copy instead. Then I just spent $75 on 2 variants of this new album and regret that. First album is way better. "Theory of the Crows" is a top ten National song.

  14. Seriously. I know the one dude is just trying to counter troll but at this point if we could get the mods to put them both in time out that would be great.

  15. Back when SWB was recorded, the band stated in several interviews that they had a wealth of new content that was written alongside the SWB material, but that a lot of it was decidedly too "bright" to accompany the album. I'm pretty sure I read that around the time the album dropped, they weren't sure what to do with all the unused music... whether it would come in the form of a new album around the corner, EPs down the road, etc. Someone (Matt?) claimed there was "about an album's worth" of ideas and songs that didn't make it onto SWB, and I think we're getting a lot of them on IAETF. I do enjoy the layers, depth, and tone of SWB – for sure – but even before this album's conception, I'm fairly sure it was made known that their next output would be notably brighter and upbeat.

  16. Shoot me an offer. I will probably get rid of mine. The deluxe copy of this album is enough for me.

  17. The two newest episodes are so good. Some characters from the movie are in it plus Paul Reubens makes an appearance as his character from Buffy.

  18. kinda tend to agree, with the added disappointment that the lyricism seems a lot more first-draft-wordsalad, a lot less refined than previous efforts. i also find myself more likely to cringe at certain lyrics than to chuckle, seems Matt's really traded in the clever non-sequitur narrative style for a much more straightforward, even cliched one.

  21. I guess I’ve been oblivious to release dates in general on Discogs, but I see it now that you mention it. Good catch. Could technically go up for sale at any point before then to ship in time for release, I imagine. After seeing how quickly some of the RSD leftovers were snatched up on TTL today, I really don’t imagine this Bloom press will last long. Hope I’m wrong though.

  23. I’m with you 100% on this post and would like to buy you a beer sometime im a little bummed just because the ntl were my fav for a long time...but I feel like they taken a step back with the last 2 LPs. Some really cool songs on each but overall as a whole not strong get Steve albini in with them...he’ll just nap at the upstate NY studio but chime in when needed my current #1 is Radiohead

  26. I don't know, I threw the album on again this afternoon and it continues to get better and better – true of all National albums, really – but to each his own. The National aren't my favorite band of all time and I don't think IAETF is AOTY or anything, but the record is really proving to tighten up with repeated listens. Will agree that it does feel a little winded at parts, but I can make way more heads-and-tails of it compared to earlier this week. Going forward, I'd be really cool with a "traditional" National album and lineup. This release does some cool, experimental things for the band that proves they can keep it fresh – for better or worse – after two decades. But 1 film-tied, slew-of-guests album is probably enough for me. (Personally speaking.)

  27. this is a good post - but people / fans stuck on the vocals are not missing out. the 2nd verse guest vocal insert on rylan is really out of place and that song is the definition of overproduced compared to the KEXP and the SWB studio cut that's on youtube. i'm not saying every song is like that but this is definitely a concept / film album. it's also long and bloated by 20 mins - length definitely doesn't help this and the BCC interludes are boring as fuck, they don't do or go anywhere. I'm guessing that's Aaron or Bryce's way of being "minimal" but it really detracts from the LP IMO. i do agree with you that it's brighter vs SWB and it's definitely a grower...but i wish they brought in a producer who can reign in their talents and come out with a diamond

  31. It's as if the state has no business being involved in what we do with our own bodies, check books, or living situations 🤔. Good on AF for voluntarily doing something to support their views, I wish more people would do that instead of advocating for more statism (which usually bites them in the ass in the long run).

  32. I did exactly this for a bad music blog in the 90s. Edit: It was Angelfire. And it still exists in all its Comic Sans horror: http://www.angelfire.com/on2/SmellyFishZine/

  33. Is this a common thing nowadays, to like design a logo and make a big push to launch an... Instagram account? That fuckin sucks! Putting Wikipedia text over shit you found on Google image search contributes nothing but noise to an Internet landscape already clogged with worthless pablum, and drives traffic to platforms that make the world worse and funnel money to the richest 10 dudes on earth! Go learn how to play drums or build a table or read a book or something! Fuck!

  34. I think I posted this before, but good to see SH is posting Station TP as REJECTED. Re: new listeners to RC, after Enter, Station languished on the shelves FOREVER because the masses wanted Enter part II... and Station wasn't that. Even Geneva couldn't cure the doldrums, but Empros seemed to bring in a bunch of new listeners, and finally a new opener (309 instead of Carpe), then Station sold out and prices skyrocketed. OK, that tangent aside, I saved this email as a perennial favorite, when my Station copy arrived as rejected. That time it was 'make an offer' not set prices, so instead of sending it back, Dan refunded me 50% LOLOLOL on the bold and underlined portions. Enjoy! Tue, Sep 13, 2016, 1:19 PM Hey Donald, Glad you got the test pressings! So, basically the way test pressings work are that the band members, producer(s), label, and maybe a few select others get a copy so that they can give the thumbs up or thumbs down to before the record goes out for mass production. I don't have an exact count on any of these, as I don't know what the bands and producers received, but I do have a count of what was in Sargent House's inventory. -Empros - 12 -Station - 5 round 1 "rejected" -Enter - 5 As far as Station is concerned, if you received the "rejected" test pressing, you received an extra treat! For whatever reason, the band decided that wasn't the version they were going to press. It could be for a master transfer issue, clarity of the vinyl, the test pressing just sounding different than what they had envisioned, an anomaly in the pressing process, etc. So, your test pressing is unique and slightly different than the released record. Thanks, Donald! Best, Dan
