  1. Why does everyone still think they should change their name when they’ve had the same frontman for 16 years and this will be their 7th album with him again? Pretty sure that ship has sailed
    8 points
  2. I don't give a shit if they change their name or not as long as they keep pumping out killer albums like they have. Saying they should do anything is dumb, they should do whatever they feel like, people can take it or leave it. The "original" lineup put out one album, if you don't like that all the members are gone retitle the artist on that one album to Luti-Kriss in your mp3 library and move on.

  6. I imagine it went down something like this. ETR: Hey Andy can we press Get Wet and overcharge for gimmicky vinyl variants sourced from CD? AWK: I’d prefer you didn’t. ETR: Well, too bad. We do what we like and we like what we do. AWK: Fair enough.

It's not that one record is too quiet, it's that the others are too loud.

due to the length of the record if it was made any louder it would have distorted everything unfortunately. had the band been thinking of vinyl back then a song probably would have been axed. just turn it up

after what we learned on this one, don't know how it's possible without a repeat of this fiasco. the only thing we can think of is a kickstarter type deal for the full amount of the license where if it doesn't fund, it doesn't happen, and nobody is charged until we know the full amount can be handed to the rights owners (which when people see what that amount is will maybe stop giving tragic hero a hard time and realize that they were absolutely bonkers to put their necks on the line to even do funeral in the first place) - hint, the license (not the pressing, the license) is more than was spent to actually make either record in the first place.

  16. Just for the sake of conversation, isn't releasing a song, or songs, before the album release date kind of a new(er) internet-age thing? I know I'm a dinosaur nearing age 40, but "Back when I was a kid..." and CDs were the standard, you had to buy releases blindly. If you were copping on the release date, anyways... Or would they release songs on the radio, just not typically in physical format? Not that shit like Norma Jean was played on any radio, but just in general, I mean. I do remember CD/cassette singles, but I feel like they weren't usually released before the LP, unless they were, and it just wasn't popular amongst me and my group of friends to buy ahead of time... I see someone else pointed out above, and I was going to reiterate what Corey, or the band collectively, addressed the lineup changes in the liner notes of was it Wrongdoers...? Essentially saying that Norma Jean is/has been an evolving family/collective of musicians. I personally don't see the issue, unless the sound is changing dramatically and has no resemblance of what it was previously. Norma Jean has been kicking ass, I don't see why this release would be any different. They've got a solid track record. I'm being old by thinking "You damn kids sure do like to find stuff to complain about!" then I remember that's what the forum and internet are for, to critique and dissect whatever the heck you're looking at. I also really liked the art when I saw it lol I just thought it looked like a bad ass cover. I see most board members also disagree on that.

  20. If anyone in here has seen them live in the past few years, Cory always makes a point to say "Norma Jean is a collective of musicians". They embrace not having a stagnant lineup, which is imo refreshing and keeps new ideas flowing into the music. That said, I also hate the new album art. PO'd two of the new variants anyway!

^ was just about to post that. I've never really understood the "too quiet" complaint. Sure, at extremes it can bring up more of the noise floor, but a slightly quieter press is necessary for long run times. Is it that hard to turn the knob on your receiver?

  36. alright fine. Honestly for boxset, if its just the 5 (gatefold) albums in a big wood box for $117 ppd limited etc, the price is reasonable and I don't think I'll ever regret the purchase. I mean, compared to that other $500 special edition today... this is a solid deal.

  39. So it seems a few weeks in that this was a bit of an overblown concern, assuming you don't have an ideological opposition to sales tax in the first place 😜. It's actually not that complicated. If you are a buyer, either: you live in a state where Discogs is an MPF (https://support.discogs.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024123194#h_92f3b7e3-8346-4582-82a7-ec8117930651) in which case Discogs automatically charges you sales tax, or you live in a non-MPF state, in which case it's up to the seller to account for sales tax if they meet your state's economic nexus threshold (see below) or if they live in the same state as you (also see below) For sellers: Your buyers in MPF states automatically pay sales tax, and Discogs automatically collects it. For non-MPF states, if you don't meet a specific state's economic nexus threshold, which means you do X amount of business in the state (at least $100,000 & 100 transactions for all states that have sales tax), you are not legally required to collect sales tax. This most likely covers everyone on VC. If you're doing that much in Discogs sales to one state, you probably have an accountant who has already explained this to you. The exception is your home state. According to Discogs, there are usually no thresholds for "resident sellers" since you're effectively the same as a brick and mortar business at that point. This is the one annoying one, since Discogs also says you technically have to register your "business" and file tax returns and all that. That seems to be on the honor system for now, since you have to go in and manually check the box for your state in your seller settings, so I'm leaving it be for now. If you really want to stay off the grid, you can always arrange an in-person meetup.

    Car CDs

HELL YES!!! My aux input busted about 7 years ago and I've never had bluetooth. I only listen to CD's in my vehicle. I still burn CD's like it's 2002. So the download code thread in this forum is great for me. The majority of my friends give me their download codes from their newer LPs because I actually use them also. I've got LPs at home, BlueTooth speakers for showering/getting ready or cooking, CDs in my vehicle, and Tapes at work (as well as my computer for bandcamp and podcasts). I have a 10 CD case that I took from a Mercedes rental back in college that I still keep. In that case I have Joy Division "Closer", Tom Petty "Wildflowers", The Get Up Kids "Something To Write Home About", Charles Bradley "Changes", Godspeed You! Black Emperor "Lift your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" (2 disc), Dengue Fever "Cannibal Courtship", Every Time I Die "Hot Damn!", and Neil Young "After The Gold Rush" There are a ton of other CDs floating around in the vehicle outside of the case (a lot of local stuff), but for the sake of the thread, that's my case of CD's that doesn't leave the vehicle.

well, we couldn't do a 1000 pressing, the rights holders have a minimum (which needs to be paid 100% up front or they won't release the rights to the pressing plant) so it would be a very large "need to fund" cost. The plus side is, once the deal of splitting the pressing was worked out, the turnaround time was about 2.5-3 months. so if we did a crowd funding thing with a set amount, if people's cards or whatever are charged, the turnaround would be more like a normal pre-order. We won't hold up new material, have a new album before end of year and a double early next year. no worries there.

    Zao Re-issues!

I may be biased since I went through all the hassle of having the new master done, but I think it sounds great. We had to have this pressed at GZ in the czech republic which I am not a fan of. I have never liked the Direct to Metal cutting they do there and while they DO accept lacquers we had 2 different lacquer cutters refuse to do it if GZ was pressing, so... it was a bit stressful for us. This record is technically about 4 minutes too long to comfortably put on one piece of vinyl without some fidelity problems. we lucked out in that the song that was going to suffer the most "lesser lights of heaven" being at the end of side 1 has almost no low end in it anyway and is KIND of blown out a bit on the original album. so inner groove distortion on any song, THAT was the one to have it happen, so without even shifting songs around, the song that would have suffered the most from a long cut is the song that kind of didn't matter if it did because, it kind of sounds like that anyway. the irony is, the very things we don't like about what the DMM cutting process were already built into the record anyway (mostly the lack of Bass frequencies and a little to much brightness on the top end) . So we didn't lose anything by using this process, there is a distinct lack of low end on the record and the high end is bright, so nothing changed. DMM DOES allow a longer/louder cut which can be more forgiving on the Inner Grooves, and that was what we needed more. overall (and i can say this objectively since i am not ON the album) i think this master sounds WAY better than the CD/Digital versions, there is actually a lot more clarity to everything without sounding drastically different, and when it matters, the quiet parts really get quiet to allow the loud parts to jump out more. -- the rest of the guys all commented on this when they heard the vinyl so it's not just me.
