  1. I actually think He Never Spoke A Mumblin' Word is their best so far. Had that album on repeat for months last year. I just wish it were longer. Mamaleek are what I'd recommend to people who don't get into the old-school black metal "philosophy" shit, but still want the mind-bogglingly bleak and dark sound that guys like Deafheaven or Liturgy don't bring.
  2. Why can't Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab just remaster all of these albums?
  3. I will defend this thread solely for the Home Movies signature. Carry on.
  4. I'm just hoping the live drums stay as interesting as the electronic drums have been for them. I'm definitely excited about them, but I'd be kinda bummed if they just wound up being those cliche, run-of-the-mill "black metal drums". Absolutely stoked for everything else. Cover is sweet. I just found the original photo they used, and if I'm bored later, I might Photoshop their old logo into it. English text is throwing me off!
  5. https://midheaven.com/item/via-dolorosa-by-mamaleek-lp#.VRdIp-GLUUw Whoa, just found this. Mamaleek pre-order appears to be available already at Midheaven? Check the description: "The fifth album from Bay Area weirdos Mamaleek, Via Dolorosa is the duo’s darkest and most experimental release, incorporating black metal, psychedelia and electronic music. It is also the first Mamaleek record featuring live drums. At once harsh, frightening and beautiful, Via Dolorosa is like an evening at the darkest jazz club as it might appear in the depths of a child’s fever dream. Though the group’s two anonymous brothers hail from the San Francisco Bay Area and their work is rife with themes of death and nihilism, musically they stand apart from the city’s most well-known black metal exports (Weakling, Leviathan, et al.). Via Dolorosa features track titles inspired by traditional slave songs and incorporates melodic, Middle Eastern aesthetics. Bask in sorrow and reflect on your pitiful existence." Aaaaaaand hype.
  6. Yeah, that's a bizarre twist. Also tragic, seeing how I missed out on the last Deathcon re-press. I always love ordering from Flenser so I can blast "Waiting For Black Metal Records To Come In The Mail" while I draw upon the irony succulently.
  7. https://www.facebook.com/FlenserRecords/posts/981973201820484 Update for a few of these new ones! Looks like I was wrong about Giles Corey. That pressing really won't be until later this year. New Deathconsciousness pressing happening eventually as well!
  8. Relevant: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/03/24/phil-robertson-duck-dynasty-hate-speech_n_6934164.html Edit: Y'know, after reading shit like this, and then having to sit through people telling me how tired they are of hearing about atheists, it's pretty hard to maintain my cool. And there's people who look up to this schmuck?
  9. I wouldn't even be outraged if someone said they liked Palms more than Deftones.
  10. Why are people still so lukewarm on it? It's madness!
  11. What about your favorite side-project songs? Team Sleep: Ever (Foreign Flag) Palms: Patagonia or Mission Sunset Crosses: Thholyghst or Death Bell
  12. Fucking pineapple is my kryptonite. Nasty. Olives are good. Mayo's fine in small doses. Fuck sauerkraut to hell.
  13. Hold the phone! New PALMS is underway! https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=963140527059649&set=vb.389202867786754&type=2&theater I need this in time for summer.
  14. I don't even think I could name an all-time favorite song. I'd need to break it down by album. Adrenaline: One Weak ATF: Be Quiet & Drive WP: Pink Maggit ...or Digital Bath ...or Feiticeira Deftones: Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event SNW: Xerces DE: Royal ...or You've Seen The Butcher ...or This Place Is Death KNY: What Happened To You?
  15. But the thing is that it's not. Most Christians I know pretty much never crack open a Bible for any occasion. If they did, they'd read about God condoning slavery, genocide, and human sacrifice among other things. The reason Christians don't support these things is because they're genuinely good people with a working moral compass, not because the Bible gives them any reason to feel otherwise.
  16. 2 days, and this thread still hasn't gotten bogged down with petty squabbling? Good on you, VC. I was raised by Fundamentalist Christian parents. My dad especially. He was also super into the End Times stuff, and I was basically told from the cradle that Jesus was going to come back "any day now", and that everyone would die, but it would be okay because we'll get to spend eternity together in Heaven. Obviously, to a child this stuff is basically fucking psychological abuse, but I shared my family's beliefs throughout my childhood, well into my adolescence. And I was serious about it, too. I went to youth group every week for probably 5 years, and I was pretty much the only kid there that took any of it to heart. Prayed all the time. Rep'ed Jesus to all my friends. The usual. The problem was that I was a natural born skeptic, and I was fascinated by science. I always got that cliche "the Bible and science are two sides of the same story" bit, and I believed it for a very long time. I was into a lot of the Christian apologetics garbage about how the Bible can be interpreted to match science exactly, or how most scientists actually believe in God, or evolution was disproved a long time ago, things like that. The thing that changed my mind was actually Carl Sagan's Cosmos. For real. I was probably 16, watching the whole series on the internet for the first time, and Sagan just had a way of explaining things that I was really enamored with, and he made such a case for scientific skepticism that I just couldn't deny what a colossal idiot I had been. I think I legit cried during the final episode. Finally, it was Sagan's book The Demon Haunted World that pushed me away from my beliefs completely. Anyone into stuff like this should read that book ASAP. It really, really helped me understand skepticism, the nature of evidence, and how destructive faith can be. Beyond that, I won't even get into the countless months I spent researching religions and philosophy before I fully understood the superiority of secular humanism, moral relativism, and methodological naturalism. So yeah, realizing that I was an atheist was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. For a lot of people, it's a really unimportant footnote in their lives, but it's kinda big for me. Looking back, I think I was legitimately miserable as a Christian. And if I'm ever "outspoken", "annoying" or a "loudmouth", it's because I know there's tons of people like me who could really use some help getting out of where they're at. People can make a case for how helpful religion can be for some, but it really comes down to truth, and if your beliefs aren't true, I find them to be totally meaningless. There isn't one helpful thing that religions and churches do that can't be accomplished by purely secular means. If you want good stuff to happen, you gotta be a part of making it happen. Simple as that. Whew.
  17. That actually reminds me. Does anyone else's CD copy of SNW sound like shit? I know both vinyl pressings were a little sketchy, (I own neither) but I picked up a CD to rip to my computer, and it sounds super compressed. Like a really cheap YouTube mp3 rip or something. Was it just mastered really poorly?
  18. I love Saturday Night Wrist. It'd be my favorite if White Pony, Koi No Yokan and Diamond Eyes didn't exist. It's so weird to me that the album came from such a fractured time for the band. It doesn't play like it at all. Very cohesive, very strong tunes.
  19. Totes agree. When Koi No Yokan came out, I thought it was the most "experimental" (for Deftones, anyway) thing they'd put out since White Pony. And here's Chino talking about this new album like KNY was baby-steps. It's got me all kinds of hyped.
  20. We're all fwendz here. I don't think anybody feels like they're being "called-out", or challenged or whatever. Here's my deal: I don't try to tell people how they should identify, that depends entirely on what they believe. It's just that words have definitions. And some people misunderstand those definitions, and try to put themselves in a category that they don't technically belong. And I'll voice my opinion if I think someone's being dishonest to themselves. Alright, horrible comparison, but it's kinda like if someone said "I'm not a racist, but...", followed by some ignorant racist remark. Sometimes it's really easy to describe a person's beliefs, even if you've never met them. You don't need to be in their head to understand what the definition of a word is. As far as church/state-separation goes, you'd be shocked at how many religious people fully support it. It's pretty much mutually-beneficial for everyone involved, and it's one of the few political issues where believers might find themselves on the same aisle as atheists.
  21. According to Chino, he's "sitting on" the new Team Sleep. I didn't take part in the pledge, but I'm kinda worried people who did will be waiting for some time. New album is definitely not Eros. They said a while ago that there would be at least one more album before they even considered going back to it. This new record actually sounds more interesting to me, anyway.
  22. Bump. I wanna talk new Deftones, and this is the most recent thread with any relevance. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/deftones-prep-heady-outside-the-box-new-album-20150310 Heady? Outside-the-box? 16 tracks?! September/October?! Will we get that second Team Sleep record this year too? What about Palms? I heard they're recording. Will all this muzak-making take its toll on Chino? He's already back in his fat form as it is. Discuss!
  23. Yeah, and I don't wanna sound like "that guy" who splits hairs over definitions, but: The question is "Does a god exist?" If your answer is "yes", you're a theist. If your answer is anything else (including "I don't know"), you're an atheist. It's just that some people who identify as non-religious/irreligious/agnostic, etc. throw flak at atheists without understanding that they are one. A little clarity can help a lot of people get along a lot better. Aaaaaand resume discussion.
  24. I read that the plan was to air this during the final episode of the new Cosmos series, but Fox shot that down pretty quickly. I kinda wondered if atheism was a taboo subject to come up on VC. Glad to see it isn't.
