Marina and the Diamonds - Electra Heart (Complete Era): Review

Marina Diamandis, best known by her stage name Marina and the Diamonds, is a U.K. based singer, who falls perfectly into the same vein of music of Sky Ferreira and Lana Del Rey, but can't seem to get it quite right. Marina would have what I would call a classical singing voice, but composes music in a non classical style combining, Syth heavy 80's pop with her iconic pseudo 50's look, and her Beautifully trained singing voice; and seems to this have a few kinks to work out in her sound. But what this album lacks, it makes up for in effort.
The album opens up with the song Bubblegum Bitch, which sounds the opening for an 80's comic book based adventure cartoon show, but can't help but sound a bit off brand when doing so, and still it manages sets the tone of the album well, but can't seem to get the execution right, leaving a bad first impression, I'll explain to you why in a second. First we need to talk about how eerily similar the vocals and tempo changes in the song Homewrecker sounds to a Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip track, for the first 25 seconds I felt like I was listening to Last Train Home again. Now back to where the album fails, the album fails because of Marina's 4x4 fetish, track after track, is assaulted with these simple backings, and ruins otherwise good tracks, like Just Desserts, and makes me half expect Pit-Bulls name to be yelled in the intro of tracks like Radioactive.
The album isn't all bad though, and over all it has a great female empowering message with tracks like Sex Yeah, along with a personal side with the insecurities shown on the tracks like Teen Idol. This album is a collection of songs I'd classify as "car bangerz" forgettable bass heavy songs best sang along with friends in a car ride; this album is nothing but car bangerz with a few stand out tracks like Lonely Hearts Club and Hypocrates, all and all this album is okay and shows a lot of potential, but was weighted down by a 4x4 fixation and uninspiring tracks, I'm looking forward to see what Ms.Diamonds has in store next

    Final Verdict: STRONG 6/LIGHT 7

No imitation string for this release!  I think the packaging is rad, but I'll probably take the frugal route on this one.

Hmmm, I'm 18, and in the 3 years or so I've been going to shows I've noticed alot about etiquette.

    - It seems like common sense, truly unspoken, but always pick up the guys who fall, and someone who's tying their shoe, you make sure they don't get knocked over. I've noticed a decline in this. Like it's really bad. I was on the floor of a Joyce Manor show for a whole song before anyone helped me up.

    - Don't grab a musicians instrument. I saw some lame cholapoppunx girl at that same Joyce show grab the bass neck and mute it in the middle of a song because she was about to stage dive.

    - Go ahead take a phone pic, just one. Don't stand there pretending people want to watch your shitty video that you'll post on YouTube later of their full set. It just looks dumb.

    - If I see some prick hardcore dancing like an ignorant fuck with complete disregard for his fellow showgoers, I give him a swift Spartan kick in the small of his back and let that fucker hit the floor. Keep the karate in the dojo.

    - Also, never listen to the band or wear their merch to a show. I'll wear a shirt I just bought underneath or have them hold a record for me if I can't carry it.

    - Have fun, I mean I understand if you don't like moshing or dancing or whatever, but there's no need to be rude to someone who accidentally bumps into you.

    - If you're going to stage dive, don't be 400 pounds and jumping on to a 4 foot tall girl. And DONT DIVE WHERE SOMEONE JUST DIVED, this is how I ended up on the floor at said Joyce show.

Since people in this thread follow rules in cliche, my recent analysis is that everyone (for the most part) who has posted here is a complete poseur.

I prefer the simple guidelines of Pogoing and Anarchy, then again I am tr00 PVNX and not a poseur.

A friend of mine recommended Dawn of Midi and it was pretty interesting.  I don't really know how to describe it, maybe very minimalist jazz?  I doubt I would have come across it on my own and it's a nice change of pace from the other instrumental stuff I listen to.

The last time someone got my card information they tried to use it to buy a bunch of stuff of a body building site.  When so many of my transactions consist of bars and pizza deliveries, you'd think that something like that would have been flagged as fraudulent immediately.

As bummed as I am that this is coming to an end, I think the timing is right.  The show is still great and it won't run the risk of wearing out it's welcome.  Since Eli is in Chicago, I'd assume we'll see a decent amount of Capone (and hopefully more Van Alden).
