scarfaceclaw reacted to axisrecapital in Mark Lanegan Band - 2 new live releases
Rough Trade is putting out two new Mark Lanegan Band live releases. Limited to only 250 each. These were pressed before his passing and meant to be sold at the merch table.
Live at The Stone Pony, New Jersey: https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/product/mark-lanegan/live-at-the-stone-pony-new-jersey
Live at Turnhout: https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/product/mark-lanegan/live-in-turnhout-knuckles
And it looks like they have a few copies of the 10 inch called Mescolito, which is a past live pressing featuring Duke Garwood: https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/product/mark-lanegan-duke-garwood/mescalito-2
Per Rough Trade: We are very happy to have been asked by the Mark Lanegan estate to be the exclusive outlet for some of his releases. For many years Mark pressed live recordings to be sold on his Merch tables at shows. These recordings were pressed by him for the 2020 tour that had to be cancelled due to covid lockdowns in Europe & have sat in his storage since then.

Y'all, It's happening! A deal has been struck and I thank lbw87 so much for being willing to part with this! I'll post some goofy photos once it's back home! Thank you all for tuning in and putting out the word. I cannot believe this is actually happening.

That's fair. I'm a Tool fan unfortunately for me but with this record, I would probably skip that G side altogether. If there was a reasonable edition available, I'd be happy to add it to my collection and play it when the mood strikes. The album is legit but I haven't been blown away by a Tool album since Lateralus. Not that they've had a ton of efforts since then. But having only a $170 to $180 option makes it hard to keep up with maintaining a full LP collection for this band and the premise is that I would like to do just that.
They could easily put out a standard 2xLP or 3xLP in a standard gatefold and not feel the need to reinvent the physical music wheel and we could buy their pretty good record for about $35 to $45 and not feel nervous handling the set when we wanted to play it. At the end of the day no one is going to congratulate or reward them on their revolutionary packaging (OK maybe the Grammy's will but what is that really worth?) especially when it all drives the total cost to purchase A SINGLE BODY OF WORK in the form a roughly 80 minute album up to nearly $200 after tax. Its still just one album.
I guess I'm just one of those vinyl playing crazies who likes to own the records that I like... on vinyl.

There is nothing hyperbolic about those words nor the context in which I used them. I avoid paying high prices for new production vinyl so as to not encourage such pricing in the future. $40 is too much for any gatefold 2xLP that doesn't come with a blowjob. (hint: none of them come with blowjobs). The way that I know that its too much is because there are more examples of gatefold 2xLPs that are in the $20-$26 than there are in the $40. Major labels not withstanding. Those fuckers are just out of their minds for the most part.
Look if there is something essential to my collection that is rare from the 90's and is completely out of print or if the pressing from that era is definitely superior to any repress, I'm gonna splurge on the out of print old one in a number of instances. But I talk shit when a store buys the licensing to have an exclusive variant of a popular record and explodes the price on the merit of exclusive color alone. Its transparently greedy and pathetic. So I talk shit. It doesn't mean I have to just choose not to buy it and forever hold my peace. I'm just talking about it. I do worry about it. The bullmoose price is awful too. Its just not as awful as the Newbury and bullmoose didn't go out of their way to bring that variant into fruition just to overcharge for it. There is a difference but either way I'm not a fan of either price and of course I won't buy it. That's obvious. I don't even want it but I call out shitty practices sometimes.

I bet if a variant was called "dumpster fire" it'd look pretty badass.

I hope it’s expensive records that seem exclusive followed by better versions in cheaper configurations later.

Well you get plenty of limited time edition records that don’t ship outside of the US so quit whining. Anyway definitely getting that JAAAOR.

Yes, other than the vinyl and the jacket the rest is the same.

It’s not that strange people are complaining, right? The preorder implied these would be the complete studio recordings (turned out that wasn’t the case) on 180 gram vinyl (which apparently isn’t the case). When you charge upwards of 400 + shipping for what’s basically six albums and some extras it’s not that weird that people expect to receive a product as advertised. Especially since we all know the whole 180 grams thing is usually an excuse for companies to actually charge more for a record in the first place.
Meanwhile, what really bothers me is that I preordered this thing the day it went up, have not received it yet (or even got shipping confirmation for that matter) while my local record store was selling it on Friday for a slightly lower price than I paid.

What’s actually hilarious is English is my second language ☺️ Nice try though!

Anyone remember the older 150 gram stickers from before they decided 180 would be the new gimmick?

I don’t think people are ridiculous, unless they are flying off the handle with rage about it, which seems to be the go to extreme for so many these days. I would have bought the box anyway if it wasn’t advertised as 180g so I don’t really care. But, because it was advertised that way, I at least would like acknowledgment of the error, an apology(a general, not a personal), and then they can offer to pay for return postage for anyone who who wants to return their NM or better box set for a refund, because they feel so “ripped off” or betrayed or lied to. I would bet they wouldn’t get many takers on that, LOL. Of course the “demand” to repress everything is silly.
If it was a legit mistake, and they acknowledge it like above, I’m good. I’m not on all the socials so I don’t know if this has gone down or if they are just flipping the bird at people voicing their disappointment, but if they aren’t being cool about it (as one person on Discogs says, that’s not cool at all.
I did dive into the set last night and yes, the highlight is the sound quality so far. I only got through Tremulant and Landscape Tantrums but both sounded really great, with near perfect pressing quality. I had a few softer ticks on LT. I really can’t wait to hear the rest.
While the music is ultimately what’s important here and they really did a great job with that, I’m not as impressed with physical portions of the box. The book left a lot to desired for me. Not having the Francis EP (there’s easily room for it though, so maybe we can add it later), and the (lack of) vinyl weight all take it down a notch for my value of the box set.
As a big fan of the music and a record fan, I can’t help but love this set despite its flaws. Definitely awesome.

Honestly, I want the whole boxset, BUT I'd be MORE than content with Deloused, FTM, and Noctourniquet (it's a good...uh...smoking album) and saving like $400.
