  1. i think they're doing a sequel to first class (maybe set in the 70's this time.) they're definitely in the process of making an iron man 3 (with shane black from kiss kiss bang bang taking over.. which should get everyone excited.) there were internet rumors this week of a third hulk with mark ruffalo which gets me pretty excited, as he was my favorite character of the avengers. so yeah, even though i was let down by the avengers, i'm still pumped on marvel.
  2. an engaging film. a captivating thriller. high stakes. honestly, i would never raise my nose to a good balls-to-the-wall action blockbuster. but with the question you posed, i should be equally enthralled with green lantern or the transformers. they're both high-budget, high-octane films. let's just turn our brains off and have a blast! but again, its obvious that the avengers is a much better film than those. i guess it does have to do with personal expectations, and how i expect filmmakers such as joss whedon to subvert those expectations (especially after JUST seeing cabin in the woods last week.) because honestly, i DO expect my "summer blockbuster superhero movies" to give me something more than explosions and highly-choreographed fight scenes. and it's not like thats an unreasonable expectation, with the dark knight and even some of the previous marvel films. the second i walked out of the theater, i did have the urge to see it again, hoping i would pick up on what i felt was missing. i just felt as though while some films may start out at 1 or 2, rise to 9 or 10, and then ease off back to 1, the avengers started at a loud 11, but then stayed at 11 for two straight hours, until my ears started to bleed. I CANT BE THE ONLY ONE!
  3. i need to let this out.. this film was a SEVERE letdown. i want to blame my high expectations (as both a huge avengers AND joss whedon fan) but i think that's just a cop out. this movie was bloated mess. 2 plus hours of fancy set pieces with no substance. i was bored out of my mind. don't get me wrong, there were cool moments dispersed throughout.. and plenty of sequences to totally geek out on (the "one-take" action scene is pretty amazing).. but to me it really played out as 'iron man 2' II. flashy effects and one-liners but nothing else. (very-slight-spoiler ahead..) when the avengers became critical of sheild and it's involvement, i thought "this was the joss whedon movie i was expecting".. but then iron man said something smarmy, and the 15th fight scene broke out. (spoiler done!) having said all of that, the hulk was used extremely effective in this, and i cant wait for the (third) hulk reboot. i don't want to be the one going against the grain on this.. but please tell me there was someone else out there as frustrated as me with this movie! EDIT: CHODE PRIDE!!!!
  4. sounds good dude.. but remember this is still a big IF at this point. keep your eyes on the fest board - people have been popping up with empty spots already!
  5. thanks for the info. there's 5 of us now.. so we still have to figure out that extra person. however, having said that, i'm the only one in the group who's 100% down, so if those people drop out, i'm not paying for that room alone, and i'll come here first to offer up the empty spots!
  6. i was teaching a class today.. gave them a 10 minute pop quiz.. and booked my room at the holiday inn. i feel horrible/awesome. question for the fest-vets: i heard holiday inn is super anal with the wristband situation. i know you get four wristbands with a room. does this include one-bed rooms?
  7. this will be my first time at the fest (!!!!!!) and i'm pretty stoked. obviously there are a lot of veteran festers here, so i was hoping i could get some advice. i'll start with the most relevant: hotel reservations. is it worth the extra $$$ for a room at the holiday inn? the special sunday show sounds enticing (as well as the convenient location) but the price is definitely steeper (i've got a group of 4 that would make it more bearable however.) also, how quickly should i make hotel reservations? i know passes usually sell out in about 2 months, but not sure about hotel rooms. THANX IN ADVANCE!
  8. hey dude, i'm with you on this one. i find nothing homophobic about your comments.. i just love that visual. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzbURUrgQao
  9. how do you chug a dick? i like to picture 30 little bite-size dicks jammed into a 20 oz soda bottle... ramming that shit back with each "chug" signifying a little dick (or maybe two, depending on your "skillz") slithering down your throat hole, with a group of white college kids with upside down visors chanting "CHUG. THOSE. DICKS. CHUG. THOSE. DICKS."
  10. masturbating... or having sex with invisible children?
  11. deciding to bump this thread as its one of the main ones i lurk upon... SO KEEP PLEASING ME. also.. this isn't a print.. but i commissioned a piece from lubrano (of iron chic fame) and i love it..
  12. quick aside... a few years ago my brother bought me a couple of VC gift certificates for christmas. he said "VC must be making a shit ton of money- selling $100 gift cards for $75 from a relatively small company.. wow." two weeks later, the first meme was posted where virgil's face was photoshopped on scrooge mcduck. sweet memories. anyway... although no one can deny the shadiness that went on (and is still going on?) behind the scenes, i'd be remiss not to mention that Virgil owed me 200 dollars (as a customer) and even though it took about a year (and me posting a picture of him as carmen san diego, and then getting booted from the boards for 3 days,) he did pay me back in full, with an apology, and a declaration that he is in the process of paying his debts off. obviously, it seems that I was one of the rare lucky ones, but so it goes. also, scott - i have nothing against you, and personally don't understand why everyone cares so much to give you shit all the time, but there have been several worthwhile rebuttals to your argument, citing personal claims as to why virgil deserves to have his name dragged in the mud, and you only seem to respond to the idiots who mention AP or post with cheap jabs. it weakens your argument.
  13. grave of the fireflies is one of the greatest movies ever made... ever. but also one of the saddest. like, prepared to have your day fucking ruined. anyway, stoked for arrietty!
  14. I love last.fm... it's nice to go back into my plays every once and awhile and track my listening trends ("Oh.. i remember that month where I listened to nothing but TMBG... kids albums included.") Also, I don't know about you guys, but mine is very reflective of my tastes... I scrobble all of my listening devices (besides my record player of course,) so it's pretty much on the mark. 15. being an embarrassingly gigantic muppets fan, i've been preparing for this movie for the past two months - watching all my favorite episodes, movies, and specials. it doesn't surpass the muppet movie or the great muppet caper, but it was still good on it's own right. the voices and performances were a bit off (definitely more obvious after submerging myself with the classics for the past weeks) but that was to be expected. the songs were okay - life is a happy song was the best new one, while the others felt a bit flat (though the whole man or muppet sequence was pretty hysterical.) all in all, i'd say it was good, not great, but still a HUGE step up from post-jim henson movies. it's nice to have them back... and chris cooper was awesome. that is all.

  20. this thread was a great read.. put a lot of films on my queue for the halloween season! my two favorite horror films also happen to be two of my favorite films of all time.. american werewolf in london is by far the most watchable movie in my dvd collection. it's funny and gory and just all around awesome. rosemary's baby is my favorite pure-horror movie. more than anything, it's just fucking creepy. jump-scares don't do anything for me.. but when a movie succeeds in seriously creeping me out, then it's a great horror movie in my book. the performances are amazing and it looks beautiful from beginning to end. might watch it again tonight. as for rob zombie - house was definitely a deeply flawed but very entertaining movie (i mean, captain spaulding is the man.) devils rejects was fucking insane. i used to watch that film all throughout high school, but now i think my balls crawled back up into my body as i got older, cause now that film just disturbs and depresses me. i guess that means it works, right? the halloween movies were all style.. and el superbeasto was a huge fucking letdown. anyway, read an interview about his upcoming film, and i'm still excited about it. trying to remain as optimistic as possible
  21. i've watched it twice since it was released, and will probably re-watch it again soon. i find that subculture so fascinating. as ignorant as they all may seem, they are SO fucking shameless that it's almost impressive. also, props to the filmmakers. if you have time, watch some of the other mini-docs they've done. the one on the bowler is particularly awesome.
