  1. I assume that the Sonos Five input is intended for a line-level (a volume level that never changes) as opposed to the pre-amp output (a volume level that changes by turning the volume knob on your pre-amp)

it's not ideal, but I think you should be able to find a volume level on the pre-amp that more or less matches the volume level the Sonos Five expects to see.

Check your Sonos Five to see if there is any volume setting associated with the line input you are using.   If you have another audio device that you can plug into the pre-amp for testing purposes, that would maybe help to identify if the issue is with the Sonos Five or the preamp.

  2. pricewise, it's pretty hard to beat a Kallax style shelf.

if you're looking for something a little more bespoke,  I'd check out Etsy.  most of the woodworker types selling online are going to have some kind of presence there.    It's a little rough because it seems like tagging the word "vinyl" to any furniture item increases the price tag 2-10-x

these look ok for the price

  3. NEVER STOP BEING A WEIRDO!!!

I keep all the original packaging unless it's damaged for some reason.  records go in new inner sleeves and jacket goes in new outer sleeve.

just imagine 50 years from now when some collector is going through your collection and they're like wow...nice collection but I can't believe he threw away all the original record paper sleeves.  trees don't exist anymore and those sleeves are irreplaceable.

  4. I realized that I do 99.99% of my listening on my desktop setup so I have been building that up a bit.   I might even ditch my main AV/stereo setup and free up a bunch of space in my living room.

    the updated desktop setup

    Kef LS50 Meta speakers

    Emotiva SE-8 flex subwoofer

    SMSL SU-8s DAC

    Technics SL1200GR (2m Blue)

    Mofi Studiophono preamp

Omnitronic TRM-402 4 channel rotary mixer

Emotiva Fusion Flex amp (variant of the 50 watt A/B mini A-100)

all of the sources go into the mixer and then out to the sub/amp/speakers.   That way all of my audio goes into a single amp and comes out the same set of speakers.   I can throw on a record but still hear IM notifications while I'm working.

The only thing I am unhappy with is handling all of the volume controls in the signal path between my PC and the amp.

  5. My setup isn't too different:

Marantz TT-15s1 with the clearaudio cart

    Marantz PM8004

    Monitor Audio RX8s

I think you'd get more bang for your buck upgrading your integrated/speakers than the turntable.   If you do some hunting, you can find one of the Marantz PM8xxx  series integrateds in the $500 range.  I had the PM5xxx and PM6xxx and the made in Japan integrated was a big step up.

I don't really have any experience with those particular speakers, I would think you will get the biggest shift in sound by swapping in different speakers even above a new amp.  Personally, I would like to try some Buchardt S400s or some thing form Zu Audio.

    THAT SAID

I recently took a little walk down the dark path and picked up a Technics SL-1200GR currently fitted with a 2M Blue (I should have just gone straight to the 2M Black) and it's been a lot of fun to deal with a more user friendly turntable particularly for playing singles.

  6. mostly agree with the above.  $500 puts you toward the bottom of a lot of the typical midrange selections.

My personal upgrade path went from some Polk Monitor 70s to a pair of Monitor Audio RX1s that I got new on clearance for around $500.  From there I moved to a pair of Monitor Audio RX8s that I found used on Craig’s List for $750.

There are a lot of solid choices in the $500-$1000 range used market.

  7. Not vinyl related but I recently added some SVS Prime Elevation speakers to serve as front heights in my AV setup

    AV receiver - Marantz SR7012

Stereo Amp - Marantz PM8004 (powering Front L/R)

    Front L/R - Monitor Audio RX8

Center - Monitor Audio RX Center

Front Height - SVS Prime Elevation

    Surround - Monitor Audio RXFX

    Subwoofer - Monitor Audio RXW-12

    Sources - Apple TV 4k, PS4

  8. Roger.  I’ve owned the Marantz PM500x, PM600x, and PM800x.

The PM5/6 seemed pretty similar to me and are a reasonable purchase if you can find one at the right price.  For a while Amazon Warehouse was selling PM5004s off and on for less than $200.  Very good buy at that price.

the PM800x series is a different story.  It’s made in Japan along side the $$$ reference series and is far beefier than the 5/6 series.  The feature set is basically the same with the exception of the 8 series having a power-amp only mode that allows you to integrate it with an AV setup.   This is the route I personally recommend.

You can find a used PM8004 or PM8005 used for around $500 if you’re patient (I’ve bought 2 for under $500). There’s one on EBay now in that range with less than a day to go.

In the market to replace my onkyo a9050. Any int amp recs under $1k with a nice remote similar to this amp?  Mainly looking to upgrade because mine was damaged during moving.

Should list what speakers you're using as well.  Most of the usual suspects in your price range will handle a wide range of speakers but some may not be rated for a 4ohm load.

  10. important to understand that a receiver is by definition a preamp + amplifier + radio receiver.

Usually at minimum you need an "integrated amplifier" which is simply a preamp + amplifier.   The "preamp" part of the equation is basically volume control.

Products like PM5005 or C 316BEE are Integrated amplifiers and will work great for a vinyl setup as they also include a "phono preamp".  a "phono preamp" is not to be confused with the "preamp" mentioned above.
