  1. I dont have that issue with my purple copy of purple... sounds like an issue with the pressing...
  2. Still a spherical stylus shouldn't wear a record any more than any other type, it is just alot better for back cuing as it doesnt really dig that deep into the groove, and really 3 grams isnt alot of tracking force (albeit higher than the average hifi stylus). He could probably get around this whole issue by purchasing an om 30 or 40 stylus to go in it, thereby improving the stylus and reducing the required tracking mass and vastly improving the sound... though there would be a slight compliance mis match (although lots of people with 1200s run the oms or concordes with om30 or 40s with plenty of positive reviews).
  3. Can you explain how a dj cart in good condition will ruin records please? Anti skate is fairly important for channel balance and correct stylus alignment in the cases where you have a fine line stylus (alot smaller than a dj elliptical) where the stylus can become pushed or pulled one way or another by too much or too little anti skate. It is true that alot of people don't use it (especially DJs due to back cuing) and for most people in most set ups it wont matter much. As for using a blank record for setting anti-skate this is how I used to do it until I realised the differences in anti-skate required between the beginning of the record and the end, now I set it by mass amount and then adjust marginally by ear and sight of the stylus but a blank record again will get it close enough.
  4. Last decent album these guys did was aha shake heartbreak, after that they simply sold out... they were good live around the aha release saw them during their tour of because of the times and they had cut their hair, had a huge banner and promoed the show on the local top 40 radio station. As a result the show was a total underage or overage mums show who probably really believed it was "the best show we have ever done!". As you can probably tell I have issue with Kings of Leon. They had so so so much fuckin potential and they sold out. AAARGH I hate it when bands do that. Story over. INB4 cool story bro or other such witty follow up
  5. Yeah the artwork was alot better on this than purple, sounds nice too, though as I mentioned on some other forum I think the equalisation is different on this than the original, sounds cleaner obviously with a little less bottom end... still sounds great just a bit different.
  6. Hey was there supposed to be an insert with this? I didn't get one?
  7. wow im such a fan of ministry up to dark side too! Just purchased a sealed copy of filth pig (my favourite) from 1994 I think. Cost a crap load but very very happy with it. I also have psalm 69 on vinyl (reissue) which is great. Unfortunately this in no way interests me New ministry is so over done in the studio, it just sounds too clean and the great riffs are just non existent. Wish they would reissue the mind and dark side on vinyl as well!
  8. received mine yesterday. vinyl was in much better nick than my copy of purple which was mildly warped. Plays very nicely but in my opinion it isnt as nice as purple (always thought that though - not just this release). Creep and Plush sound amazing! Would love to hear anyone's thoughts in a comparison with the original. Jacket has much better art than the MOV purple too, closer to the original and not as blurry which is nice. No inserts though? All in all I would recommend this, the clear vinyl looks very cool with that etching coming through, first bit of clear vinyl I own and it sounds as good as plain black.
  9. So wowhd shows as having shipped my copy a couple of days ago, anyone received theirs yet? Whats the package like and more importantly how does it sound?
  10. I would have thought a step up to the bronze would have been a lot more significant (if your budget will allow). The blue and red use essentially the same cartridge body, the difference is the stylus. The bronze and black use an upgraded cartridge body and much better styli. Maybe keep using the red until its worn out and in the meantime save your cash for a bronze (or something else entirely).
  11. I go t a copy of the unknown relatives album when I first signed up with Feedbands. I really enjoyed the album and still play it pretty regularly. Unfortunately the shipping to NZ was way too expensive and the total cost was more than most records cost locally (that I know the music or artists of) and so I cancelled. Also I really didn't like the music that was available to listen on and vote for through their app. This made me sketch out more so than the shipping costs actually, but then I ended up loving the record they sent me. Would probably sign up again if they could lower shipping costs... and or give you an option of say three albums that you could stream and decide which one you prefer.
  12. Also to the above poster a dj cartridge well set up and in good condition WILL NOT wreck your records!
  13. Just be careful that cartridge actually has a range of 3 - 5gms. The lowest you should set it at is 3 grams. 2.5 or lower and you run the risk of it skating across your vinyl and bouncing in the groove (not necessarily audible either) which causes a lot more damage than a bit of extra mass. You should never go lower than recommended tracking forces for a number of reasons including the fact that the ortofon dj carts are not very compliant and so need a bit of extra mass to sound good (read better bass and high frequency response) and to sit nicely in the groove. Yes it is quite heavy compared to hifi carts but they are designed to run heavy and have a spherical diamond which doesn't sit particularly deeply in the groove or are particularly sharp and nasty (which is why they are ok to back cue with without causing too much damage to the groove). Set your anti skate to the same number of grams you have applied to the cartridge and tweak it slightly one way or the other by ear. Congratulations on buying a great hifi turntable. With an upgraded cartridge nothing under $800 or so will compete with its speed accuracy and reliability. On top of that you now have VTA adjustment on the fly and a very quiet deck. It is a total workhorse and cheaply serviced if need be too. If you are after a decent hifi cart for it I recommend the denon dl301mk2. Great frequency match for the mid weight arm of the 1200. Or keep the ortofon and buy more tunes!
  14. also just make sure when your dad set it up that he applied the correct weight to the cartridge (a quick internet search on the cartridge should give its optimum weight) as if it is too heavy it can cause damage to the cartridge and your records, otherwise your records will be fine for many years to come!
  15. mission speakers are ok... not sure the model you have but some sound really really good (mid to hi fi), might just be worth getting them serviced at some stage as it may be a minor fix. If they are a decent model they will definitely sound better than the home made ones by the looks (they look like car speakers - 6x9s or something similar). Because they are bookshelf speakers you wont get the big bottom end you may prefer from hip hop, as bookshelf speakers are normally paired with a sub woofer, but for a first setup I think they will be fine. I wonder if the bass is causing them to distort? You may need a new turntable mat if it isnt flat (a slight amount of movement is fine and normal though) and if it is causing any woofer pumping (low frequencies associated with warps coming out of your speakers as vibrations with no sound). Hopefully it is just that and not your vinyl... Otherwise remember to hold records by the edges and if your not competent with dropping the needle carefully then use the arm assist lever. Always put records away in their sleeves when not playing to avoid getting any excess dust on them or accidentally scratching them. Store them vertically and not leaning too much to avoid warpage. You are beginning to build a nice collection by the sounds of things, vinyl generally holds its value pretty well so long as your records are well cared for! A spin clean or vacuum cleaner may need to be kept in mind if your going to buy alot of second hand vinyl (which can be pretty grubby) but if your buying brand new or from a reputable store that cleans their second hand vinyl before selling then you should be sweet without one (although a carbon fibre brush will be useful in keeping them clean and dust free).
  16. I expect Tiny Music will be next on the release list...
  17. incidentally a friend of mine in NZ paid around $90 NZD to get an original second hand (mint) tiny music shipped from the states via ebay, im assuming $50 for a brand new reissue is going to annoy him somewhat. It shows how much these have gone for on occasion!
  18. Wowhd has got the release up but no info about whether it is coloured or not, suppose that will come shortly. I got it for $45 NZD which is around $35 US. I used the code that they give you if you share their info on facebook - SOCIALTEN. Not sure if it will work for everyone else as it needs to be associated with your account, but easy enough to get, just follow the instructions. I kinda see what you mean about its banality but I absolutely love creep and plush, so for me its worth it, not to mention theres not that many options for a $20 version here, the bay would kill me in shipping and would pay about the same. Im assuming that tiny music will follow after this, and will no doubt get that as well. But will stop there haha.
  19. yeah as I said, I was worried ahah. Shouldnt have been it seems, wonder if mine was a different press (purchased it in NZ but assume they were all pressed at the same place). By the way the cover art is cool and mine isnt even the deluxe version! The blue really pops, looks great on the shelf next to The Knife - shaking the habitual neon pink haha. I really really like this album. And I much prefer the heavy soul style of the last three Queens albums. ALot of the music on lullabies and era didnt make sense to me until I saw them live... made a big arena feel like a small intimate club gig! Theres just something about the groove that they make that I just love - for an entirely different reason to why I loved songs for the deaf and Rated R.
  20. Record Shopping today with birthday money - picked up: Mad Season - Above - RSD reissue The Knife - Silent Shout Opossum - Electric Hawaii Ramones - Ramones (back on black reissue) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Push the sky away Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork (indie version) Pinback - Summer in Abaddon Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold My Stone Temple Pilots - Purple reissue (Purple limited ed.) arrived yesterday too so can include that I suppose (it was warped though so going for a vinyl flat session tomorrow). Sounds superb though! Very impressed with the sound quality of the Queens album and the mad season reissue - both are very quiet and lush.
  21. Agreed, after tiny music I dont really think alot of STPs output. A few tracks on 4 are good, but generally the first three albums are their standouts in my opinion. I will pay $45 for core, thats about what we pay in NZ for 2xLP albums. Would pay it for tiny music as well as that owuld complete my STP 'trilogy'.
  22. Just got a copy of the indie (blue cover) version and was really concerned that it would sound bad as above reports... mine is perfect (at least so far and Im two sides in), no warpage and beautiful sounding. Quiet too.
  23. Yeah im pretty sure wowhd have an australian site, just go to the main site and find its Australian version, prices will then be in Aus dollars and will include free shipping... they are pretty good (where I got my STP Purple reissue among others).
  24. hopefully wowhd gets it soon, they are great as they do free shipping to New Zealand so their prices end up being very competitive.
