First of all, welcome to VC and vinylmadness
Concerning labels, I decided on putting stickers from shrink wrap of gatefolds on the pvc sleeves they are stored in, as long as they hold more information than 'includes cd or dlc'. When it's a single LP with no gatefold cover I usually leave the shrink wrap on.

This is awesome. Thank you! As a noob, I am researching and learning, and have also come to find that among your list of good options at certain price points, it's not a "seen one, seen them all" kinda thing. Variation is obviously great. So, hopefully I don't drive you too bonkers with my noob questions... I feel I have to ask them, as I take music seriously, and know that you much more experienced TT audio folks have a wealth of AWESOME advice. So...

I just got a SOTA Moonbeam Series II TT. Super excited. Now, I am trying to figure out what would be best for my system in terms of a phono tube preamp, and cartridge.

    Here's what I have:

    SOTA Moonbeam Series II TT
    B&W 686 speakers
    Pioneer Subwoofer
    Pioneer Elite VSX-40 Receiver

My research has me confused as I have read different things from different people. My journey into vinyl is for numerous reasons -- I want to collect vintage vinyl; I want to hear music without any compression or remastering; I want my music warm and lively, but still highly "listenable" -- meaning not-over-the-top lively.

All this said, do any of you (much more experience folks than I) have any suggestions as to what cartridge for under $300 and tube preamp for under $1,000 would be best suited for my system and hopes? Fingers crossed you are open to sharing your thoughts with me!

I've got a couple cool BtS tapes in the last few months. They're pretty interesting so I figured I'd share them here.

The tape on the left is a compilation put out my Michael John Serpe on his label Home Recorded Cassette Culture. This was a project where Michael had friends mail him tapes and then he put this compilation together with material from that From what I've read, these weren't sold in stores; They were mailorder only. There's a track from Doug. In the booklet, the track is called "God Wrote a Song" and is credited to Doug Martsch and Karena. On the tape, the artist name is "all smiles" There's a booklet included with a page from each artist. In case you can't make it out from the photo, here's Doug's page says:

    Michael,

Sorry it took so long. Feel free to use as much or little of this as you want. The first two songs are by "Insect Theater" with credits -  written and recorded by Doug Martsch 1991. The third is by "All Smiles" and credits should read - written and recorded by Doug & Karena in 1994. Also say thanks to Todd Dunnigan for use of D.A.T. recorder and thanks James for co-inspiring 5 on 3 if you use it.

    Thanks lots,
    Doug

oh! Please return D.A.T. when you're done. Thanks.

The track is pretty interesting. It sounds like a children's church song. Doug's vocals are a lot more in the background and Karena's and a child's are more prominent. I've heard that the child vocals are from their son, but I'm not sure.

Here's an article from 1995 I found about this tape.

The other tape is a copy of Perfect From Now On. I saw this on Ebay and bought it pretty quick. I've never seen a copy on cassette before and I can't find any information about it being released. There's a "Warner Music Thailand" price sticker on it, which made me think it was a bootleg, but the quality is great on it. If it's a boot, someone really did their homework. If you type in the bar code, it brings up listings for it, and it was sealed with Warner Music shrink wrap so it might be legitimate. Most of the colors on the artwork are inverted, which is pretty interesting. Here's some more photos.

I know! I mean, I listened to it hundreds of times over the years and I think it's pretty good with some really decent songs, but at the end of the day I like every other album of theirs at least a bit more..

Yeah, I got that 86-87 collection and it sounds like ass. Luckily I was able to snag originals of all 87+ MBV plus two boots that collect both Isn't Anything and Loveless Ep's separately. Those sound pretty impressive either.

No matter how much a record is 'worth', I'll never consider spending 50+ bucks for an LP a good deal.

I really see how people get excited about purchasing a record they love and been dying to get for quite a while, but I have to disagree about spending TWOHUNDRED DOLLARS for an LP being a good deal. It's record craziness and beyond. I am happy for each and everyone of you who payed A LOT of money for records they wanted, but this is not the right thread for this..

Hope you didn't take it the wrong way, didn't mean to be offensive to anyone. It's impossible to put a reasonable price tag on something that has huge emotional value to someone. If it was worth it to you, then it was worth it. Enjoy the records, that's what we're all about.
