  1. Went to Tiny Record Shop recently. Amazing selection - no dud records - but everything is $10-$15 more than it should be. Everything you might think should be $10 is $20, and some of the rarer ones are higher even than the highest discogs prices. Too bad because it's a pretty convenient location for me. June Records is my new favourite since Criminal closed. Sonic Boom's location is terrible. And the fact that it's still open until midnight makes no sense - why would I ever be on Spadina past 6pm? I think there are a couple of other new ones. On mobile now but will find out which ones when I get a chance.
  2. Cool. My next articles will be about tacos. I fucking love tacos. No interviews though. Just tacos.
  3. Bump. I want to sell some stuff quick to make money to put towards a new turntable. If you want something in the next several hours, I'll ship first thing tomorrow! Deals can be made!
  4. That's kind of what I'm hoping for when I purchase better speakers!
  5. I've decided that within the next few months, once I save some money, I am going to upgrade all components of my system (1970s JVC turntable with Ortofon cartridge will become Pro-Ject Debut Carbon), and I plan on getting Wharfedale 10.1 and a reasonable amp (I have an okay NAD preamp, so will see what I need). I figure I'm looking to save up $1200 or so for my upgrade. My dad just offered me components from his stereo system, which include a Kenwood Home Theatre receiver (which I'm pretty sure is nothing too fancy, but working) and Bose 201 speakers. I've looked around (on this forum or otherwise), and the feedback on Bose is that they're pretty lousy, average at best. Is it even worth taking these speakers from him? I figure it might allow me to buy the Debut Carbon sooner, and then replace the amp/speakers later into the spring. But am I doing a disservice to the potential of the turntable?
  6. So excited for this! Might be a really dumb question, but my father-in-law is very sensitive to fragrances. Can I make a request for a non-perfumed copy or will they all be pre-sprayed?
  7. I'm selling a bunch of stuff on Discogs, but will offer some of it here at cheaper prices. I'm located in Canada, but I have found a unique courier service [if you're curious about it, ask me] that will help with very cheap shipping internationally (well, better than Canada Post anyways). Will consider trades too. Here's my Discogs store for full list of everything, plus ratings: http://www.discogs.com/seller/raindogtrombone/profile All prices before shipping and in USD. UPDATED DECEMBER 17 Shipping is as follows for LPs; cheaper for 7 inches: US: $7 for one, $8 for more than one. (sent via USPS media mail) Canada: $8 for any amount. 8. Damn. I just sold that for $50 three months ago and thought I got a lot for it...
  9. Received my Ontario Gothic today. I bought another copy last month when I saw him in concert (because I didn't want to wait any longer) so now I have two copies: green and blue. Does anyone want a copy (blue has been played 3-4 times, green so far unplayed). $30 + shipping (sorry if that seems inflated- it cost $33 total to ship to Canada, not trying to rip anyone off). PM me if so (and check my references on Discogs if need be - same name there).
  10. White whale LP: Royal City - At Rush Hour the Cars (Canadian band, defunct label, nothing showing up on Discogs for more than a year, even CD is insanely hard to find) Out of price range: Hold Steady - Separation Sunday Beulah - When Your Heartstrings Break White unicorn (does not exist on vinyl but sure wish it did): Paul Westerberg - Stereo/Mono treble charger - Maybe It's Me (90s Canadian alterna-rock...so good!)
  11. So almost a month after I received my second package (the first one had a lot of LPs and I had to pay $20 to UPS), I get a bill for brokerage charges for the second order (which was about $60, but just left at my door). Anyone ever have this happen? Do I have to pay it? I already have the package...
  12. I don't think I have heard all the b-sides, but have heard they're pretty solid. it seems (via Scat's website) that a separate LP with some of the tracks from the Director's Cut may be pressed as well.
  13. Amazing news. I was considering spending too much money for an older press, so I'm excited that it's being repressed, especially in a non-limited way.
  14. Listen to it backwards. Usually you can hear the value in the first three or four minutes.
  15. Same. Glad to know that I'm not the only one waiting for a LCW. Long Drive appeared last Monday, and I anticipated the LCW this Monday, but no dice so far. I think it came via DHL, but no fees.
  16. Went to see Foxes in Fiction and Mister Lies in Toronto last night. Great show! Owen Pallett played violin with Foxes, and that was pretty neat...for a guy who plays shows with Arcade Fire in front of 20,000 (or even 500 on his own), it was kind of cool to see him play on a much smaller scale. Warren was genuinely excited to play in front of the crowd - I love when musicians show that kind of passion. I picked up Ontario Gothic on vinyl(I'm still waiting for a copy via mail, but I plan to give that copy to my friend when I do get it!). Mister Lies was kind of cool. A little bit dark for me, but there were some really really good songs - especially the vocal tracks - one of them, I think called Pill from the new album, is totally stellar.
  17. 1. The Clash - London Calling 2. Elvis Costello - My Aim is True 3. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 4. Hayden - Everything I Long For 5. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks 6. Marah - Kids in Philly 7. Constantines - Shine a Light 8. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker 9. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs 10. Wheat - Hope and Adams At the moment at least...
  18. Yeah - listen to the studio version of the song and the laugh track is there. Kind of haunting and fascinating. I ordered the Deluxe edition from FJM's website. To Canada the LP was $1 cheaper, and the shipping was $5 cheaper. Not a huge difference, but also a huge difference. So excited for this album. My wife has played Fear Fun more than anything else in the last couple of years.
  19. Are you using Kinek for shipping pickup? Or a PO box? I'm curious because I've been thinking about setting up a way to receive packages in Buffalo/Niagara Falls. Have you had success with them?
  20. I ordered Monday afternoon to Canada. Arrived yesterday. $71 for 5 records; had to pay just under $20 CAD brokerage fee (UPS), which is not great, but I've been dinged a lot worse with orders from the US. I was kind of amazed at how fast it all came. They also had one LP temporarily out of stock. I'm very curious as to if it will ever ship, and what kind of expense it may incur (the album is New Pornographers' Twin Cinema, which is in print via Matador, so they may well get it soon).
  21. My wife and I did something similar too! We went to a few thrift shops to buy some old and cheap vinyl (a huge stack for $30, mostly crap). We made wedding programs using the record covers, and then spray-painted the centers of the records black and used a stencil to add a logo and our names to the vinyl. We had also thought about some other ideas to incorporate vinyl into our wedding in different ways, so if you or your fiancee wants to touch base with me, just send me a PM! http://www.torontolife.com/galleries/real-weddings-2013-alysse-and-daniel/#real-weddings-2013-alysse-and-daniel-07 http://www.torontolife.com/galleries/real-weddings-2013-alysse-and-daniel/#real-weddings-2013-alysse-and-daniel-04
