Sidney Crosley got a reaction from THE_James_Champ in Daniel Field - Underwater Hotel - My new album based on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Hi everyone! You probably remember me spamming the boards a few years ago with a self-indulgent project where I was able to get my album on limited vinyl. Last year I posted here asking to see if anyone was interested in contributing, and I had a chance to chat with a few folks about my music.

Today I'm really excited to share my new album, Underwater Hotel, an orchestral indie pop/folk song cycle based around and directly responding to Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot [each of the nine songs directly corresponds to one of the songs on YHF - see if you can figure out which]. Mostly home-recorded but with 19 guest musicians, and filled with strings, horns, woodwinds, and lots of layers.  Obviously influenced by Wilco, but also Beulah, Ryan Adams, Hayden, Broken Social Scene - I did my best to make this sound like it could have come out in 2002 or so.

It's available to stream on Bandcamp, plus all streaming sites, and will be available on limited CD (for those of you who still have CD players!

Said the native Americans.  They come from shithole countries bringing disease, colonialism, slavery, and something called the Chainsmokers. I’d love to hear one good reason why all these ‘real’ Americans think they deserve the land that they stole or colonized and therefore shouldn’t need to be respectful to people that are, shock: actually humans too.

Haiti in particular has been getting fucked over in major ways for literally centuries, first by French colonialism then by US imperialism. So it is pretty fucking disgraceful for a sitting president to call it a shithole when his predecessors are essentially the reason it is the way it is today. It's like if your neighbor slashed your tires, called your car a piece of shit, then got all sanctimonious when you asked for a ride.

Everything is fucked and broken....hmmm...lets just blame immigrants instead of addressing the actual root of the problems.

I can empathize with feeling angry and helpless. There are large swaths of people who have been left out and left behind and the current system is trending more and more away from helping them lead productive, meaningful lives.
What I don't empathize with is the choice to aim that anger and apply the blame toward immigrants, poor people, minorities, gays, or any sub group that isn't in charge of our system and is historically just as kicked down by our system as you are feeling. It's a distraction and it doesn't benefit you or improve your situation.
It's not about being nice either. I think it's ok for people to be selfish and get what's best for themselves and advocate for themselves. If we all fought for what was needed to improve our lives, I can guarantee it would help everyone.

Agreed. Great set and the extra tracks are fun. Though I can’t seem to find where the download code is - haven’t come across it yet.

Guess I may as well sell my 2LP reissue...

Unrelated, I’ve kept looking on amazon.ca for decent Canadian deals and there have literally been none since the Primus deal a week or so ago...Has been a bit of a post-Christmas dead zone.

As did mine. I honestly never thought it would come through, but I'm super excited because I love this album and haven't heard the extra stuff.

Complete this collection yesterday.  The artist is Hayden, a Canadian mopey folky indie singer/songwriter from Toronto who has flown under the radar for nearly his entire career (seemingly by choice). I'm torn between thinking he has never received the attention he has deserved and thinking he's gotten exactly the attention he has wanted. Everything by the last three LPs are OOP.

Each album title is a link to a great jam from each album (albums with multiple pressings feature different songs in each link)

    The big ones:
    Everything I Long For - Original press - 1996
    Everything I Long For - 20th anniversary reissue on white (1000) - 2016
    Everything I Long For - 20th anniversary reissue on teal (500) - 2016
    Moving Careful 10" - 1996
The Closer I Get (500) - First vinyl pressing for RSD 2014
Skyscraper National Park - Original press - 2001
Skyscraper National Park - Repress on clear (500) - 2013 (Supposed to be hand numbered, but I bought it off a friend of Hayden's who run's a record shop, and it's apparently an extra from the run so is un-numbered).
Elk Lake Serenade - 2004 (somehow bought this in 2015 from discogs, sealed, for $17CAD)
In Field & Town - 2008 (After a bunch of digging and googling, I found a US online retailer in 2015 that still had sealed copies in stock and got two copies for $11USD. Pleased)
The Place Where We Used To Live - 2009
    Us Alone - 2013
    Hey Love - 2015

    The little ones:
Mild and Hazy - 1996. I have two copies., one has a matte glued sleeve while the other has a glossy folded sleeve. I don't believe they are two distinct pressings, but when I saw one was different than what I had I bought it anyway, just because.
Lunar Landing Confirmed - 1996. A split with Poledo.
Carry on Mentality - 1997. The newest addition and currently my favourite two Hayden songs. Took forever to find this at a reasonable price and luckily someone a few hours away posted it on the 'bay last week and no one else felt like bidding on it.
Nowhere We Cannot Go - 2015. All the sleeves are handmade from maps of around the country, no idea about pressing numbers .

That's what I am seeing. There is a guy in my office who has been investing in Initial Coin Offerings. He is making between 2x and 5x his investments so far.
When he sells his stake, it goes back in to Etherum. I keep telling him to at least bank his initial stake but not sure he's listening. The fear of selling too low is very real.

I have one setup, it's really not too bad/hard. A couple tips I have are:

Get this to start.. it'll have everything you need minus the case to get started:
    https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Micro-Supply-Listed/dp/B01C6FFNY4/

Make sure you have an actual power on/off switch that you can power the pi with because unplugging while live will kill the OS/SD card.

get an SD card that's at least 16 GB for all of the games
use the included adapter and a SD Card/USB reader to load the ROMs onto the pi, don't try to set up NFS or samba unless you know what you are doing.

Buy one of these, it will really help with setups/on the fly troubleshooting:
    https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-920-007119-Wireless-Keyboard-Connected/dp/B014EUQOGK/

Narrow the games/systems you want to have installed on the pi, and make sure the roms work nicely. The last thing you need is to get stupid excited and load something like 50,000 games onto it and have it never used because trying to find a game that you want to play will take forever, the rom doesn't work,. or you ed up just playing the same 5 games over and over again.

    Get a cool case:
https://www.amazon.com/Functional-POWER-Button-Retroflag-Rasberry/dp/B073ZC4TZY/  - this one comes with a power/reset buttons built in, which is pretty rad.

Here's a cool guide to help you get off the ground:

    https://howchoo.com/g/mwnlytk3zmm/how-to-add-a-power-button-to-your-raspberry-pi

In the end, this shit is a huge rabbit hole. Pick a plan and go with it, there are literally an infinite amount of things/tweaks you can make and it'll leave you with zero start. go with something basic and as you learn more and time goes on you (or your brother) can make the adjustments/upgrades you want to make the perfect system you desire. If not you could end up with a half built system that doesn't work and about $500 down the drain.

Take it slow and easy. Don't rush it and try not to get frustrated, I don't know how many times shit didn't work the way it was expected to when I do any of my projects. each challenge is a learning opportunity and lesson in troubleshooting. You'll get there though.

    most importantly, have fun!

With the news that Tommy Keene has passed away, I'd love for 1998's Isolation Party (Matador), 2002's The Merry Go Round Broke Down (spinArt), 2006's Crashing The Ether (Eleven Thirty) and finally 2009's Into The Late Bright (Second Motion) to all find their way to vinyl. I know it's 4 different labels so the impetus to have a concerted release is nil, but I can always hope.
