  1. Thanks for sharing this! Antiphon was recommended to me by a friend who's really into jazz, and it quickly became one of my favourite albums in recent memory. Love the addition of the conversations and how he structured the songs around them. It reminds me of Charles Spearin's "Happiness Project", which I would recommend to anyone who's already a fan of the Broken Social Scene/Do Make Say Think catalogues. A beautiful record that flew mostly under the radar here in Canada. But yeah, I'm happy to hear there will be a pressing for this release right off the bat! The preview track on Bandcamp sounds great too.
  2. Yeah, fuck him for wanting to do something different and provide for himself (and his family). Also, that giant new Spotify ad with Alexisonfire in Yonge-Dundas square sure screams "We make no money from this!".
  3. In an interview with the Edge 102.1 in Toronto, George and Dallas mentioned that there are no plans for an album or EP at this time - just the few shows in the summer. But they do say that there are a few songs in the works, and that there's a possibility of them just "dripping" singles out once in a while like Drake. They seem like they're happy with the freedom that streaming platforms provide artists nowadays. And Dallas talks about how he has the keys to a recording space so they just go and jam/write whenever they feel like it.
  4. Damn. I was about to check out the dates to see if they were coming. Very unfortunate! I honestly don't remember the last time Conor was in town
  5. Why? What's so funny about having a positive opinion on something? I agree it's too early to call AOTY, but what's the issue with saying some of the songs are the best I've heard so far this year?
  6. Wow, wasn't expecting so much negativity in here. I think this is much more accessible than Colour, and it has a lot more standout tracks than that album. As a result, I've actually really enjoyed the album so far - minus that Travis Scott track. Feel like it doesn't fit at all with the rest of the album, and is the most forgettable song of the bunch. Maybe I just don't like Travis Scott? Still, there are some real highlights on the album and I think they outweigh and balance out the softer, simpler songs like "Lullaby for my Insomniac". Songs like "Into the Red" and "Where's the Catch?" are some of my favourites so far this year. The addition of Rosalia on "Barefoot in the Park" was beautiful, and it's a solid track as well. I do wish there was more similarities between these tracks and his earliest stuff (dat b a s s), but you can tell he's trying something different and is entirely head over heels. I think that's fine, and it's refreshing to hear some love songs in this style.
  7. Nah, I'm with you on this. Though I enjoyed some of the songs on Total Life Forever, the rest of their stuff just hasn't clicked with me. My girlfriend is the complete opposite. She loves everything post-TLF. It's very strange. The new single is decent, but nothing special. At least the video is beautifully shot. Some of those colours and locations were phenomenal.
  8. Same here. I just can't justify the shipping costs anymore. A local store usually has a pretty decent selection of Erased Tapes' stuff, so hopefully it'll be there soon enough.
  9. A second Encores is now up for pre-order on the Erased Tapes website. It's called Encores 2 and the preview of the last track sounds fucking incredible. PO link here: https://www.erasedtapes.com/release/eratp117-nils-frahm-encores-2
  10. Man, none of you think straight. Stop trying to be heroic. I guess if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is around here. But, this could be an opportunity to rent a nice car since the price of gas is cheap, then take a lovely drive out to Brighton for the weekend while paying attention to the details as we go slowly, slowly down to the beach? Why'd you all have to get so hysterical? Just play it cool.
  11. Fucking eh! It's disgusting. I had to order all of toes' discography and some of Prawn's to make it worth it last time I ordered from them. It was still an absurd shipping fee though. I've done this through their Tumblr account and never got a response. I don't think they care, to be honest.
  12. Only 1 LP and no 7" with Little Thoughts? That sucks for anyone who doesn't have a copy of the older pressings. Thankfully I got my hands on the last repress. I was surprised to see they're still going for a hefty amount on Discogs. But this album is worth it. It's so damn good.
  13. I feel the same way. It always seems like Paul is straining his voice now, and I miss a lot of the dynamics they used to have in the rhythm section (who doesn't?!). As much as I applaud Paul for taking on bass duties in recording their last two records, there's just no real memorable bass lines anymore. Although it seems like Sam has stepped up in the drumming department lately. Really moves the whole band forward and last time I saw them live, he was absolutely flawless in chugging them along. The drumming on "Party's Over" and "Stay in Touch" is really great, lots of variety compared to some of the other tracks. I think them being a trio doesn't help whoever is on production duty because there's a lot less to work with when it's just the three of them in a room. They seem pretty set in their own way of writing songs, and less willing to try and move outside that comfort zone. This is fine, and will please longtime fans more than anything - but I just wish they took more risks with this album. I also really miss the long, experimental and really moving outros they used to do on songs like PDA. Flight of Fancy has a hint of it but just doesn't have the same effect in the end. I also don't understand why there are two interludes, with one coming right before the last track on the album and providing no context to the song. I feel like they could've easily been left off the record or just included as intros/outros like the beginning of "Number 10". All in all, I wish they'd get Peter Katis back on production duty.
  14. I don't know but the only ones I've seen in the wild were used copies of Mr. Beast and Hawk is Howling, the former here in Montreal and the latter in Toronto. I bought both because I had never seen them elsewhere (new or used). I've never seen a copy of Happy Songs anywhere in Canada, so I'm happy to hear about this re-press.
  15. So, after 5+ listens through, I'm on the opposite end of the opinion spectrum on this one...I really don't like it as a whole. At least half of the album seems like filler, and so many of the tracks have the same churning drum beat and tired one-liner cliches (You Moved Away, Near/Far, Autumn Love, When We Drive especially). A lot of the guitar riffs sound similar as well, or just things I feel I've heard before in my least favourite DCFC songs. You can also tell that a handful of the tracks on this thing were shoe-horned in to be radio-friendly. Surely influenced by the major label but it's never been quite as obvious in the past as it is now. "Oh oh oh ohhh! This autumn love...Oh oh oh ohhhh! Is it not enough!" ...You sell those Ford Escapes, Ben! (I have nothing against them making money from their music, as they always have...but this is just lazy). Overall, the album is not terrible but it is awfully boring and entirely forgettable. It has the same listless vibe as Codes & Keys, which I think is DCFC's worst album by far. I will say that the one positive thing about the album is the closer, 60 & Punk. With the exception of the random synth swell after the second chorus (around 2:31), it's the only song with the detail-filled lyricism I'm used to from Ben Gibbard. I also really enjoy the piano as it reminds me of Passenger Seat, What Sarah Said and all those greats. Funny how the best song on the record is one that deals with musicians growing old and becoming irrelevant.
  16. Awesome! Thanks for the heads up! Had no idea they were repressing Beware of the Maniacs - I added the red 1st press to my wantlist on Discogs like two weeks ago. Great news!! Pre-ordered the bundle right away. Single is good and sounds like a heavier version of their first two records. I like how every layer comes together toward the end of the song. To be honest, I've never really been disappointed with any of their releases, so I'm definitely excited for some new Dodos.
  17. Those swirls are the nicest set of any record I've seen. So beautifully done! And after such a long wait, so worth it.
  18. What's weird about it? His voice has been like this for awhile now, especially in his solo stuff and the Banks & Steelz record. Even The Rover has a similar feel! I'm not a fan of the overly-distorted vocals though, if that's what you mean? It all sounds too mashed together. Overall not a terrible song, but not great either - Rover was more fun.
  19. Really thought they'd keep it limited to that box set, especially considering their usual habits. Glad that Robert decided not to this time, as some of the tracks on 1 + 1 = X are beautiful. Michael Price is one of the ET artists I haven't really been able to get into, but I love the album art. Song previews song alright too! Maybe I'll give him another shot.
  20. Anybody else have the LCD 2s? I own a pair of LCD 2.2, bamboo and run them through a Furutech ADL GT40 but I'm not sure if the headphones would benefit from something more powerful. The GT40 is a crazy all-in-one unit though, and I would recommend it if anyone is looking for a small, simple solution to switch between their turntable and a PC. Seems like Schiit gets all the love lately, but there are other options!
  21. Yup, fully aware. But the LP is $22 CDN and so is shipping. Going to try and find a copy locally instead.
  22. Damn it. I love this album and still don't own a copy, would've been nice to get a copy of this.
  23. Simple, but they didn't look so cheap. Something About Airplanes had a die-cut cover, and the Photo Album had beautiful packaging overall that fit well with the theme of the album. This one looks like a shitty Instagram ad. The 3D effect to the typeface is dated, and the gradient in the "Thank you for today" lettering is just...bad.
