  1. My most recent purchase. U-Turn Orbit turntable. In the lovely blue. I am going to have to wait through a Canada Post strike for its arrival, but my old turntable still works decently enough for now. I am getting a new turntable because the 45 mode no longer functions on mine, might never had done so. Even though the previous owner replaced the belt, I think the motor is just old and starting to wear down because my records wobble and wawa a bit as I'm playing them. Its hard to describe the sound, like its slowing down and speeding up, just a tiny bit. But I've been in love with the Orbit turntables since I first saw them. It was hard picking a color. So now I need to wait. Oh, and recently bought some vintage children's Disney and Smurfs Christmas vinyl from a thrift shop and a record my mom once had called Looney Tunes. I love this old record to pieces. So many feels! Such memories!
  2. Tamagotchi is pretty much the thing that never dies. It may not be on American toy shelves but its been ongoing in Japan since it was first released. You can now get all sorts of amazing kinds of tamas (as we tamagotchi collectors call them.) I have TONS in my collection, but none for sale right now, but maybe soon, I have some I still have to put batteries in and run (to test them of course! Really! Just to test them, I promise...>_> ). Ebay is a great place to find more if you are looking for them, and anybody interested in collecting them should check out Tama Talk, one of the best Tamagotchi communities out there. http://www.tamatalk.com/ *geeked out a little bit (a LOT) seeing the title of this thread*
  3. Tycho - Awake (Standard black with free download code thing) I know I said I would get the new Libertines album as my first 'new' vinyl purchase, but I saw this and I've seen this almost everywhere on youtube vinyl lover channels and thought this might be a good first purchase, since I already know I like the music (that I've heard so far, I haven't listened to it on youtube because I wanted to save the whole album for when I purchased it for myself.) Almost forgot to add the price. $18.99 Canadian, still in shrink wrap.
  4. If you had seen this black box of confusion you would get my...confusion. ...Yeah. Anyhoo, the cat pictures have made my day and eased my sorrows. I am giving you the kirby dance to show my love! (>'-')> <('-'<) ^(' - ')^ <('-'<) (>'-')>
  5. So glad I could amuse everyone. Sort of takes the sting out of having a complete stranger shit all over your day when people you are supposed to be able to trust for advice online ALSO shit all over your day.
  6. Oh hell yeah! I know what my first new record is going to be. Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssss!!!!!!!
  7. I couldn't find a thread for this. I was browsing speakers at a thrift store (they were all junk so I didn't get one) and asked a nearby guy for help identifying something that looked like a speaker, but was not labelled as such. And we had a "nice" discussion in which he said he sold all his vinyl stuff and said "why have vinyl when you could have your music on CDs?" He also came up to me later as I was browsing the vinyl section and saw what was in my basket and criticized my choice in Anne Murray. "You weren't even born yet!" (no, I wasn't born when she was big, my mom was a big fan though and she taught me to love Anne Murray, and Kenny Rogers, which is the other vinyl I got.) and then he said "Do you even know where she was born?" (Canada, but that's not the point, because I don't even know where half my relatives were born!) But this guy was maybe the same age as my own dad and he was skeptical that vinyl was coming back and I felt like he wasn't discouraging me out of friendly helpfulness but was actually mocking my interests and music tastes. I'm so new to this too and I really wanted to enjoy my trip to buy more vinyl and only felt like a silly kid. I'm 33, I am not a silly kid and shouldn't be made to feel like one. Anybody else have a similar experience?
  8. What does BPC mean? The price I paid was actually about $94 CAN, around $75 US including shipping. From a Canadian seller. The turntable has a new drive belt.
  9. Again, thank you so much for your help. I have this website bookmarked to help me figure things out. http://turntablelab.com/pages/beginners-guide-to-turntables I know I said I was going to get the Oribit turntable, but my finances were not as good as I thought they would be this month, and I'd still need to buy the pre-amp and everything else, so the really nice turntable will have to come later, I'll slowly just upgrade things as I'm able to I guess. I'm just so new to all this and I know I'll probably make mistakes, probably have already made mistakes, I'm glad you guys are still willing to help a newbie out. So correct me if I'm wrong, the supply list: speakers, pre-amp and amplifier? I'll handle the speakers next, the computer speakers I have are fine for computer stuff but not for music. Luckily we have a thriving community of audio junkies here so there's plenty used speakers to be found. I think I'll just go see if I can get better ones at the local thrift store.
  10. Well, after schlepping around the city looking for a turntable and finding zilch but Crosley's I decided to throw caution to the wind and went to ebay. $100 CAN later (which thankfully includes shipping) and I have a JVC turntable on the way...(with brand new belt, is that a good thing?) http://www.ebay.ca/itm/252006835905 Hope this link works. I like the look of it. The other one I was looking at on ebay was around the same price, called Pioneer, had some sort of audio output problem and I didn't want to try and fix a problem myself. So here's to hoping this one sounds good. It has the auto queue and return functions which I like because my hands shake like a mother.... Anyhoo, now I need speakers for it. I know a place where I can get used speakers hella cheap so I'll be going there once the turntable gets here and I know what kind of cables I'll need for that.
  11. Thank you everyone. I have a bunch of vinyl shops in my town and a huge music scene and I've been looking around at classifieds and whats available. I might get an inexpensive vintage player to start, I'm not going to be buying any $30 records yet, I like classic rock music anyways and Dr Disc has tons of under $5 records in genres I like. So I'll start that way, and save up for the nicest record player I can reasonably save for, probably something from Pro-Ject or the U-Turn PLUS model which is just like the inexpensive regular model but with that lovely clear platter. Or I can custom build to order from them too so I can get some add-ons. But probably not this month. I'll have to save. For now, something that I can just get started with. Any vintage experts here who can tell me a bit about picking one? One of the ones I'm looking at is called a 'Symphonic' which I think is the brand. The other is...and don't laugh...a sears record player meant for children, red and white plastic, which includes a microphone for singing along. Please don't laugh, its just like the record player my mother first let me play her records on, though hers was probably not a sears, there was no sears in the town we both grew up in.
  12. I am officially insane. I don't even own a turntable yet but I bought two used records today at a second hand shop. Well at least I'll have something to play when I DO get my turntable. The first is Disney Disco: Since its related to my 70's/80's cassette and toy collecting hobby at least its something I know I'll want to keep around, if only to have something with 'Disney' on the label. Its in pretty good condition, but it needs a protective papar slip cover thing, it just have the cardboard outer cover with Minnie and Mickey doing the disco thing long before Goofy embarrassed his own kid at college with his groovyness. The other is Air Supply's greatest hits, the second hand shop had TWO copies of this, I got the best one, which still had its inner protective paper cover with pictures of the band, and the outer cover of course. They were $2 CAN each so I think I did all right. I'm afraid to buy anything brand new until I know what kind of turntable I'll have. I may end up getting a vintage turntable and who knows what it might do to a new record. Or is it the other way around, new stuff is numerous and old stuff is valuable? O.o Vinyl is so confusing this way.
  13. I planted a tea plant in China for earth day a few years ago through Adagio. I get the first harvest of leaves for it, once its ready to be harvested. I'm such a tea lover, I miss my adagio shipments, but I'm trying to get my finances back in check. (And here I am starting yet ANOTHER hobby! XD)
  14. I'm sadly stuck with bagged tea, though I stick to rooibos and Chai and herbals. No cheap stuff.
  15. The irony is that the turntable will be the last thing I buy. I'll need the pre-amp and the speakers first, I don't think my dinky computer speakers will be enough. Though they are very...funkey...http://ubfunkeys.thespeakeasy.com/img/blog/2008/07/speakers.jpg
