Oh yeah, if you're going for the weekend there is no reason to leave the strip. It's just friggin desert. Lake Mead is nice and you can do a desert trip if you have longer, but don't bother if it's just a weekend

I lived there for 8 weeks this summer. When you arrive and get a cab to your hotel make like you've been there before and ask him to take Paradise (assuming you're staying at the strip). When you get to your hotel, tip the hotel clerk $20 and ask if s/he can get you in a better room. This almost always gets you a sweet room and if not, they'll not take your money. You can bring it with you, but it's also fine to give it to them up to a year afterwards (although I wouldn't wait that long). A lot of people prefer to have gifts dropped off later because they don't have to haul them off.
