  1. Looking to trade an extra copy of Armitice I was gifted. Brand new and sealed with hyper sticker. If not, make me an offer.

    -  Morrissey

    -  Otto Totland Pino/The Lost

    -  Catherine Wheel - Adam & Eve

  2. There's a middle age vibe for sure on this LP. T-Shirt, La Dee Da, Sunday Rain and the title track are among the tracks that have that strong Beatles, Motorhead, and Led Zep vibe. But Run and The Line still give is that signature Foo sound. Sky Is A Neighborhood gives me a Black Mountain vibe which Grohl has said he loves. It's a very unique track to hear from them and was a breath of fresh air.  Arrows (my favorite track on the album) has a unique Foo/Queen blend. The instrumentation and production are spot in on. If they would've toned down the classic rock vibes just a tad, I'd probably put it up there with the first few albums. That being said, I enjoyed this album ALOT. This is def an album to enjoy on wax.

Well, let's use our brain a bit.. if someone is pricing at 35 and someone is pricing at 20, consistently over several years.

It's safe to assume the guy pricing at 20 dollars isn't losing money consistently, because that's idiotic and would not last. So, with that assumption and assuming the price of making records is fairly standard, at bare break even (which let's also admit is not how a company does business. Even with a "cult following") the other company is making 15 dollars profit more than the other, for the same exact product...

It's hard to make it much clearer than that. If the company charging 35 is using a pressing company that charges 2x it's competitors then they are doing a bad job.

The point is, profit on vinyl is LOW, and that's a fact. Nothing surprising about a company padding that number to make it worth their while, but nothing wrong with seeing through the BS and recognizing pure profit markup for what it is.

How many are they pressing vs pressing plant price. That affects costs. Its easy to assume. Also, what is the profit margin vs sales? Im just saying this because this release is only 300 copies. When you press 1000 and you know people are going to buy them, you can afford to charge $20. You can argue averages all day. But what you are implying is that these guys are trying to make money here based of what you believe you know, is causing it to be $10 more than the norm. The fact is you dont REALLY knowing all the facts. I don't know for sure, so I don't assume. I'll leave it at that.

And to add some more detail/context to my previous reply.

IDIB sells 1xLPs for $15 and 2xLPs for $20. So, don't for a second think that it actually costs $15+ to add a second hunk of plastic to a package. It's just padding the profit margin when they're priced so high.

Can you show me the numbers on that? Number of copies and pressing plant cost. Again, you guys are right, but how certain can you be of whats driving the cost behind the prices?

    Nope.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've paid more than $30 retail for a 2xlp, and I can count on my dick the amount of times I've thought, "this is totally ok that they're charging this much."

Part of the problem is you're throwing places like Newbury (who are a store, not a label) in here that just charge a premium to folks who don't know any better so they can have the "pretty colored vinyl"

Look man, dont hate the player, hate the game, you guys are smart record buyers. I threw Newbury in there as an example of what is setting the bar. Italians do it better, have been in business for a long time and have a cult following at this point, which was my point about Deathwish and Topshelf. I'm not saying any of you are wrong.

I corrected this, FYI, I had my albums confused.

Well, for starters, nothing I can write in this post will flip on a light switch that'll make you - personally - reassign your monetary value for this record or double LPs in general.  If it's worth it to you and you've decided you're going to spend the money, go for it.  My post was referring to the "well, X is charging this much for Y, so I guess that's the new going rate, oh well".  You're not the only person to fall back on that logic here at VC, and it's just dangerous for the cost of vinyl as a whole.

Yes, the general cost of items rise over time.  No, I do not expect to buy double LPs for $22-$25 for the rest of my life.  But there are absolutely exceptions.  I'm at work and unable to scour the list of what I've purchased this year, but how about smaller self-ran labels like Topshelf, or Deathwish Inc.?  I get that their products may not be personally "hand assembled" in runs of 300, but I also feel like there are plenty of labels out there that still offer double LPs for < $35 PPD.  That means if that was the average or acceptable price for a double LP, you wouldn't be able to afford 3 albums for $100.  And if that was slowly accepted as the norm (and raised for special occasions where records have "hand-sewn jackets" and "handwritten lyric sheets"), eventually you wouldn't be able to even afford shoes to gaze at while you listen to your records.

I agree with you. All your points are valid, and make sense. That being said...Club AC30, Sonic Cathedral, Newbury (ones I could think of), while goes against your point of X and Y, are selling records for well above that range, in terms of 2LP sets. And thats taking into accounts that they are buying 1000 of these and not just 300, which should make the price go down, not up. I believe if Topshelf and Deathwish, started their label this week, their LPs would be $36 PPD. They are self run, but have been in the business for a very long time. How much do the so-called "Deluxe" 2LP editions for all the latest Relapse sell for? I paid $40 for my True Widow, and all that had was a turntable mat. I have to go by what the standard is, because, what other way are you going to set the bar on prices? Yes, if you think in an economics way, yes, makes complete sense. I tried to start a diy awhile back, and unless you do Pirate Press, its just too much money to press vinyl, especially in small runs.
