Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs pressings thoughts?
johnnypaddock replied to STÖNCÜLD's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Agreed with most of the sentiment here... they are hit and miss for me although many of the recent titles are outstanding. The Miles Davis MFSL reissues are amazing, especially the recent Sorcerer and Nefertiti on 45rpm. The Bob Dylan titles are excellent, although I prefer original pressings for the most part. The Pixies - Doolittle is another good one for sure. Pressing and packaging quality is almost always excellent. -

Yeah, the original pressing was cut right from the 16/44 files from what I understand. I had a copy a few years ago but it sounded exactly like the CD, so I sold it. I haven't heard the recent reissue though. At Newbury Comics this afternoon, I picked up Mastodon - Leviathan for $15 and some change. Also grabbed Yob - Atma for under $20. It's a pretty good sale, 25% off, but some of their LP's are way over-priced to begin with, so it's worthwhile to do a bit of price research before going nuts in there. -

I just got my copy... Here are a few pictures. In the deadwax is written "sounds like it's time for a trip to the doctor's". Will get the chance to crank it up this weekend hopefully. Seems like a nice pressing overall.

THE WHITE STRIPES - Get Behind Me Satan 2LP
johnnypaddock replied to dreamover's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Looking forward to this one for sure... It got a lot of play at my house when it was first released. Also, the colors don't bother me at all. I have heard numerous white LP's that played perfectly fine.- 300 replies

I've never heard of them until these last few posts. I'd love to see some of their stuff on vinyl, but in the meantime it would be nice if they offered FLAC downloads. I'm not a huge fan of CD's as physical media, plus they are pretty expensive on that site. The music samples I've heard sound great though. Pretty cool label.

Damn, some great recommendations in this thread... Thanks to everyone posting. I've only been stopping by VC for a little over a week, and it's already cost me much more money than I needed to spend. I'd like to throw this one into the ring... It was released last year on RVNG. I've played in many times since then. Bing & Ruth: Tomorrow Was The Golden Age

Deafheaven have a new one coming out? That would be a must-buy for me. Looking forward to D'Angelo - Black Messiah coming out next month. -

Damn, I just missed out on a few on the UO site. Jaylib sold out while in my cart, followed by Madlib - Pill Jar. Great little sale though, I ended up with two LP's for $15 as well. Thanks for posting the link. On the UO site, I recommend the album by Dupree, titled Nuestro Camino, for $5. They are a B3 organ trio from Texas. The album was recorded live to 2-track tape, then cut all-analog at Trutone. It's a pink colored vinyl, really nice pressing. Even though they are technically a jazz trio, the music is so funky that I keep it with my "regular" vinyl and not in the jazz section. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=31658487&parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS#/ -
Bob Dylan - Columbia/MOV/4men...?
johnnypaddock replied to wpjs's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
I've got the Columbia copy of Modern Times and it is one of those titles that simply blows away the CD. It's most likely cut from high-resolution digital, but the mastering on the vinyl is a night and day difference from the brickwalled CD. I haven't heard the MOV pressing, but at those prices I would definitely stick with the US Columbia. MOV either used the same metal parts or they might have done their own mastering at 24/96, but I wouldn't assume the sound quality would be any better. I don't have any experience with Oh Mercy. I do know that many 4MWB pressings are simply cut from 16/44 digital, and you'd be just as well off with the CD. Plus, original pressings of this title are common and affordable... I don't see a reason to get an expensive reissue for this one. -
Thanks for posting about Modern Guilt. I sold my US copy a few years ago while scrounging up cash for another purchase, and was just thinking about getting a new one. I ordered one from Amazon.ca last night. Really looking forward to giving it a listen.

How did you find Vinyl Collective?
johnnypaddock replied to loren's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Just came across this thread during a random Google search... I think I was researching a Beastie Boys title last night. Starting to look around a bit now. Nice forum.
