  1.

Just saw this awesome news this morning. If any of you were fans of Zookeeper, which is a project of Chris Simpson from Mineral, this release is essentially Zookeeper's first EP and first full-length (Becoming All Things) being released on vinyl for the first time as a 2xLP that also includes 3 previously unreleased tracks. The preorder also includes a download of an unreleased ten song album of home demos recorded in 2004-2005. I used to see them play all the time when I lived in Austin, so I'm pumped!

  2. I thought about making a separate post, but this seems like a good place for this. Kissed by an Animal is one of my favorite bands in Brooklyn, and their debut album is getting released on vinyl by Handstand Records soon. You can see a review of the album and there's a place to listen to the album here or listen on Spotify. Favorite track: Right Now

The lead singer/guitarist, Dima Drjuchin is probably best known as an artist, most notably for doing the album cover for Father John Misty's Fear Fun. While the official release will be out on Handstand Records soon, Dima is selling 10 test pressings here, complete with hand drawn covers and labels - each one is unique. They're admittedly not cheap, but it's a great record with really cool hand drawn album art, so I thought some of you may be interested in listening and taking a look. I purchased #8/10 myself!

  3. One of my favorite local bands is finally releasing their debut tomorrow. Over the years, Alex Toth has become one of my favorite songwriters in NYC. He's one of the main songwriters for Rubblebucket, he's the lead singer of the band Alexander F, which is completely different, but equally as good, and this is essentially his solo project, and it may be my favorite project of his. I've seen him play these songs many times over the last couple years, so I'm feeling like it could be my AOTY. There's five songs that are streamable right now here: https://tothtunes.bandcamp.com/album/practice-magic-and-seek-professional-help-when-necessary

He's got black and limited edition Translucent Light Blue vinyl available, and it looks like there's only 26 left of those. The record is described as a breakup album before wholeness, but after anger. I highly recommend checking it out.

  4. I won't lie. I'm not a cassette collector, but I caught a band called The Unconditional Love in Brooklyn recently. They were the opener, and I wasn't familiar with them, but they blew me away. I talked to the band after the show, and they gave me a cassette. It turns out the lead singer was also the artist behind the album cover for Father John Misty's Fear Fun. I think it's a sweet recording. You can listen to the record for free and buy the cassette here: http://dimaandthevisionquest.bandcamp.com/releases. They said the cassette is limited to 100 copies. The Unconditional Love is the same singer, but it's just guitar and drums...they've got a couple demos here: https://soundcloud.com/theunconditionallove. Not sure if ya'll will be fans, but I'm excited to see what else they come out with.

  5. Love Jason Isbell! Southeastern is one of my favorite records of the last few years. I actually got curious last night to see if it had leaked, and it has. The new record is incredibly solid. I was afraid that Southeastern was so good that it would be too hard to create a worthy follow-up, but he totally did. I preordered the record, and can't wait to see him play in Brooklyn next month at Prospect Park!

  6. I'm kind of surprised there isn't already a thread for this. I saw Leon Bridges open for Sharon Van Etten, and his band blew me away. His debut comes out on Columbia on 6.23. Personally, this has an extremely solid chance of being my favorite album of 2015. He already has 4 songs available from the record on Spotify, and all of them are fantastic. If you're completely unfamiliar, his songs sound like late 50's/early 60's motown. He's got a few options for the pre-order:

For some background, Leon is from Fort Worth, Texas. To my knowledge, he was playing a club one night, and the drummer and guitarist of White Denim were there randomly. They loved his set, and helped him record and produce two songs, which captured the attention of some blogs. He formed a band, which includes both of the guys from White Denim. They did some touring, and got signed to Columbia soon after. I've got a feeling Coming Home will be a big album this year. Hope ya'll like it.

  7. Outside of the shipping cost, I've always had a good experience. I've always received my order quickly, and all the records showed up in perfect condition. Definitely check out their $5 records. I recently snagged Centro-matic - Candidate Waltz, Do Make Say Think - Goodbye Enemy Airship, The Landlord is Dead and Divine Fits - S/T for $5 each. I also got Spoon - Kill the Moonlight for $10.  The biggest bummer is the expensive shipping options. Their cheapest option (at least for me, in NYC) was $10.19...even for one record.  Adding more records made it more worthwhile. I was super pumped to get all 4 of those records for $35 shipped.

  8. I think a lot of people get bummed that they're not re-issuing stuff that actually needs a re-issue, but continue putting out stuff that is easily available at reasonable prices already. They then charge a $20-$30 premium on it for a few days, then jack the price up further.

I think the only hate you're going to get is from asking people if they can't afford something, as if everyone should be willing and able to lay down $30-$40 bucks for shit that they could get for $10 elsewhere. That comes off as elitist and makes you sound kind of like a prick.

I'm really sorry if anyone takes offense to the question on being able to afford the record. I meant it as an honest question, because it's probably the only real reason I could understand on someone hating the company.  I absolutely agree they should stick to the price they set originally. That rubs me the wrong way as well.
