Supposedly Klein and the Stones do get ALL the songwriting royalties forever, after suing The Verve for the unauthorized sample. Richard Ashcroft was paid a flat rate for "lyrics".... which is the sort of crotch kick that Klein specializes in. It did lead to a fantastic Ashcroft quote though: "Well, Bitter Sweet Symphony is now the best song the Stones have written in 20 years."

PO: Def Leppard "Hysteria" Orange Variant
filthyrich replied to filthyrich's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
HAHA, wound up finding a cheaper price in the thread I started. Thanks for that. I cancelled my uDiscover order too. Not trying to change minds, but the OG of Hysteria was never super-easy to find, as late 1980s vinyl from big acts often isn't. (Try finding The Cure's Disintegration or Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever sometimes.) And while the sound was good (it's an RL), the fidelity suffers simply because it's a single record where each side is 30 minutes long. The grooves are beyond tiny. So if they don't screw up the mastering, this SHOULD sound as good or better simply by being spread over two records for the first time ever. And I suspect a limited-to-500 variant will be worth at least what you paid for it, if the SQ sucks. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I can sell my OG and my picture disc version (SQ=terrible, going rate=surprisingly high).- 42 replies

https://us.udiscovermusic.com/collections/vinyl/products/hysteria-limited-edition-orange-vinyl-2lp Only 500 for the U.S., so not sure how long these will last. Hysteria is only my 3rd favorite Lep album... which still makes it pretty great. And unlike the earlier albums, this one does NOT sound good on the original vinyl. (30 minutes a side???) There's also a $129.99 super duper box set (CD/DVD).... which the pimply mulleted version of me who saw DL in the round in Atlanta would've salivated over.

Reissues and new pressings
filthyrich replied to Highlite23's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Fair points, and there are lots of "analog purists" out there.... They'd rather get a 1980s reissue (cut from a substandard master by engineers who don't care and pressed on cheap noisy vinyl) rather than a new reissue (cut by the best guys in the business on premium vinyl) because the 80s version is "analog" and the new reissue is "digitally sourced." Doesn't mean it will sound better though. To cite a few specifics: --The best Zeppelin cuts are the original UKs (which will run you $50+ for VG copies) along with the RL of LZII (which will cost you $150 for a non-noisy copy). Or you can try the all-analog Classics (OOP, about $150 apiece). The new reissues are cut from hi-rez digital, but they sound very good and DEAD quiet. (Definitely better than my non-RL US originals from the 70s.) If you don't have a $10,000 system, you probably won't notice the difference. --The Pink Floyd reissues are also cut from hi-rez digital and, according to audiophiles, come very close to the original UKs (although opinions differ). They will run you less than $20 new. A mint UK of Piper or DSOTM will run you at least $100. Your call. (FYI I did not buy The Wall because I scored a mint US copy years ago for $10, and I have a Japanese Meddle from the 1970s that sounds amazing... although that will now cost you triple what the reissue does). --The Beatles mono reissues are AAA, sell for $20 apiece, and will blow away any Beatles original press you have, barring the original UKs that now go for $150+. They will definitely smoke the inferior US Capitol pressings. This is really a no-brainer. --The Hendrix reissues are AAA as well (at least the three studio albums) so again, a no-brainer. --The Beach Boys reissues on AP are also AAA. The Rhino reissue of Rumours is AAA, cut by Kevin Gray & Hoffman, and sounds amazing too. --The new Kinks reissues are also AAA. --The new batch of Tom Petty reissues coming out (box sets but individual titles soon) are also AAA and sound awesome. --Stay away from the Queen reissues, which are digitally sourced but actually SOUND that way. --The Bowie records are mixed. Ziggy is AAA and sounds better than anything but the best UK cuts. The Man Who Sold The World is digital but still beats most originals. The rest will be inferior to the best UK pressings. (But again, you will not be able to find any original UK Bowie in mint condition for under $40 anymore.) -
The Official 'Vinyl Me, Please' thread.

Huh. Guess I was lucky I got in early. Used the mobile app in between errands, FF was up around 11:55 AM EST and smooth as a breeze. Then I checked the store and went, "HUH? It's still available??" But now I read about the hours of server issues, so makes sense. Good luck to all, I feel like it should sell out within hours. -

Tool Vinyl BUYING GUIDE (Original/Boots, etc.)

Is this the same Maynard who decided to release his band's greatest album only as a picture disc? -
Tool Vinyl BUYING GUIDE (Original/Boots, etc.)
filthyrich replied to topher's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
I think a few companies bought up their existing stock, but it was retailers like Acoustic Sounds. No one today is doing 100% AAA masterings with the kind of name artists that Classic got during their heyday, and (even worse) new reissues from the same artists don't use their plates. So basically, all their pressings go for high-to-crazy prices now. Not just the Zeppelins ($150 and up) but nearly all the Peter Gabriels... and Genesis... and even stuff like Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan, and Dido. (DIDO IS A $250+ RECORD. Wrap your mind around that: https://www.discogs.com/Dido-No-Angel/release/168493 ) -

Slight problem: Classic Records went out of business almost 10 years ago. Otherwise, good point. -
Marillion "Misplaced Childhood" 4LP Box Set 7/7/17
filthyrich replied to jmpatrick's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Hmmm.... I guess there's very few of us! I only recently discovered this band and album. I guess it might sound "dated" to some, but if you appreciate prog-rock and don't mind some 80s-era production, this thing is a gem. Think Peter Gabriel vocals atop the widescreen keyboard and soaring guitar of Pink Floyd. (And with some Rush-style time-signature trickery too!) This might be blasphemy, but I sprang for the CD/BR set rather than the vinyl. A lot more material (plus video and 5.1) at half the cost. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of live albums on vinyl, and the only other material is the album itself, which is a cheap OG. I did order from Fish's website to get the signed PO. Not too expensive even with overseas shipping. http://shop.fishheads.club/product/misplaced-childhood-deluxe-cdbluray-version/ http://shop.fishheads.club/product/misplaced-childhood-deluxe-vinyl-box-set/ -

I have Friday at 3 PM in the "Reza Brain Aneurysm" pool. Throw in your money! It's fun. Winner gets a OKNOTOK blue vinyl that came from a site that cancelled Reza's preorder. -

Because Radiohead doesn't want the entire edition leaking online 7 weeks early? Because you know that as soon as they send the DD instantly... That will happen. -

Which ones am I missing? Man O' War, Lift, I Promise. True Love Waits from AMSP. Spectre as a free download. Burn The Witch was an old song, right? But I'm still missing 4. -

I'll be honest... If not for the blue vinyl, I would've waited on this. If only to hear reviews. I have the Parlophone press and I doubt this will be an improvement. Having all the (studio) B-sides on vinyl in one spot, plus the unreleased songs, is worth it however... if they do the pressing right. -

Yeah, but a $43 total (including high shipping) vs. $40 for Amoeba (with free shipping?) is really no different. -

Now that I'm finally caught up on this thread, it would be REAAAAALLY nice for y'all to start posting new links again. As opposed to the (literally) 10 links I already hit that said "SOLD OUT." The Vinyl Deals Thread (non-Amazon)
filthyrich replied to itsgoodtobefree's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Not sure if anyone besides me ordered Relationship of Command (ATDI) from the eBay seller shoppingmadeeasy2. If you did, let me know if you had a similar experience: 1) Vinyl shipped from overseas (AUS) with no tracking #. Okay. 2) Shipping time was over a month. Sure. It's Australia. 3) Package arrived yesterday. I ordered two copies of the vinyl. The package that arrived was... about 6 inches by 6 inches. And contained.... ONE CD. 4) Immediately opened a return. They accepted, but their "return label" was just instructions to return it to their CA warehouse at my expense, with a shipping receipt so they can "reimburse" me for the return shipping cost. I mean, between PayPal and eBay, I'm covered here. And since I ordered back in March, apparently import copies are back on the market cheap, so I'm not angry I missed out on a "great deal." But just the level of screw-up here.... I honestly can't tell if they were trying to intentionally scam people (and made a tidy profit even with 50% returns) or someone really screwed up in the shipping dept. Either way, buyer beware with these guys in the future. (Their rating is +43,222 for what it's worth.) -
Just to be clear.... If you've jumped through hoops for over an hour on BM's site and your one item now says "Buying is disabled for this product".... ...You're basically fucked, right? I mean, I've heard that some people were able to checkout after seeing this, but I can't get past this screen now.

In fairness, the Bowie "Cracked Actor" was something like 17,000 pressed worldwide.... and good luck finding that for less than triple the cost. But agreed that I didn't think the Jason Isbell would be such a hot commodity. I hit my "smaller" record store after the main one and he was sold out of both Bowies, Dead, DMB, Marcy, Bruce, etc..... But still had multiple Isbells left. Had I known....
