Today marks the release of the excellent full length by THE VALENTEENS entitled "Fuzzed Out Tone for the Painfully Alone" on cassette courtesy of HIP KID and ICE AGE RECORDS. Pop songs played at 45 rpm, with the volume and ferocity pushed to the brink of destruction. Drums explode through thick walls of fuzz and distortion to make room for the hooks, while the melody-laden vocals help navigate through the forest of noise, leading you towards the light and onto the dance floor. Basement style, old smelly carpets, house shows for punk and patch kids. This was in New Paltz, a college town at the bottom of a mountain in upstate New York. Dean (Dean Engle, the band’s songwriter/vocalist) worked at one of the town's two record shops, as K Records-obsessed small town boys usually do. The QUARTERBACKS line-up combusted after a handful of shows. The songs sat dormant until January 2012 when Dean enlisted Max Restaino and Tom Christie to revive the project. The new three-piece expanded the original vision, playing love-obsessed songs with limited affectation. The songs averaged under-2 minutes, and the DIY ethic remained firm. A few tape-only releases came into being (See the brilliant Double Double Whammy Records of Brooklyn NY). Two years of upstate basement shows further refined their efficient tw*e punk set, new songs slowly forming from familiar themes and chord patterns, progress through recursion. Down the street from the record shop where Dean worked was Team Love Records, a record label that had relocated from Sugar Street in NYC’s East Village to Church Street in New Paltz. The folks at Team Love and Dean found themselves spending way too much time discussing favorite Cat’s Miaow singles and post-Young Marble Giants projects. On February 10th, 2015, Team Love will release the first official long-player by QUARTERBACKS. It’s 19 songs played in 22 minutes. It’s fast, broken-hearted and full of people, places and things. QUARTERBACKS was recorded at the Tin Roof Sessions Studio in New Paltz by Kyle Gilbride in less than twelve hours.

Lydia Ainsworth has a new record out in September and the few tracks that have dropped from it are quite fantastic. I didn't pay enough attention to them first time round but they are incredibly engrossing and very very well composed. It is being released on Arbutus records out of Montreal - a record label that I have been highly, highly impressed by this year - I am a big fan of the Sean Nicholas Savage album they released a few months ago, they also have a rad band called 'TOPS' coming out with a new album in September. Anyway, here is some choons from this new Lydia Ainsworth joint! The video is pretty fantastic as well. The BABY GHOSTS - Maybe Ghosts LP is finally upon us. Tests are approved, artwork is in hand and the vinyl is in production. So, pre-orders are going up now and expected to ship by mid-August. God damn this new track is amazing! I can already smell the "oh man, I don't like how they changed their sound" comments, but those people can go butt a stump. Love these guys no matter what. Like their albums before them, After The End was recorded and produced by the band, this time over a six-month period in the house they share in Tampa. A real achievement in showing what bands can achieve themselves, the only outside influence came when they enlisted mixing help from Gareth Jones - the man famed for his work with Tuxedomoon, Depeche Mode’s Berlin Trilogy of Construction Time Again, Some Great Reward, and Black Celebration, and more recently Interpol, These New Puritans and Grizzly Bear.
